| My mom loves to cook. She is the best cook I have ever crossed in my lifetime. But since she loves to cook there was always food on the table. We were encouraged to finish off our plate.

| I wish my mother would not have rewarded us with food and treats. I wish we were not raised with food being an event and part of any and all celebrations. And I wish I never would have learned emotional eating or eating because I was bored. I wish they would have promoted exercise and physical activities. I wish I could have developed walking/running/hiking/swimming something into a habit early. I was always busy going and doing with my friends, but its not the same as an exercise routine which creates (hopefully) a longtime habit.

I wish my parents knew how to have fun, then they would have taught me too. I'm 40 and slowly learning how to have fun without feeling guilty.

I wish:
my Mom would've let my Dad give himself a chance to prove that he might have been a good guy, so I could've met him
That she would've been stricter w/me...I could've gotten farther in High school and been more careful!
That I wouldn't have moved out of my grandmothers house. I have wonderful memories of that and them

I wish they wouldn't have: -emphasized appearance so much -tried to bribe me to lose weight -pushed me into makeup and dressing too maturely -demonstrating bingeing as a way of life -etc.

| I wish my Dad would have been around more and chose his children over alcohol and my Momma would have made better decisions in the husbands she had after her divorce...

| first let me say my parents were the best, however being flawed humans as we all are. I have just one small complaint. I wished they would have had me when they were younger so we would have gotten to spend more time together.

| All I wish my parents had done differently was that they had taken me to church and taught me about God and the Bible instead of letting me live the way I wanted and go through years of drinking, bad relationships, and a lot of other bad stuff before I finally got my life right with God in my mid-30's.

| I wish my father's nickname for me wasn't "buffalo but". Really, what was he thinking?

I wish my mother had not fed every problem or issue. I wish my father hadn't compared me to my "fat" mother and my skinny sisters. I wish they had provided me with more accurate nutrition information...a better baseline diet.
Aside from food/weight issues, I wish they had told me more often that I was good enough. I wish my mother had touched me more and I wish I had heard the words "I love you." I wish my father had realized that fear is not the same as respect and I wish he had chosen his children over his addiction (alcohol). Most importantly, I wish I had not been subjected to my father's verbal and sometimes physical abuse of my mother as I think this did more damage to my self esteem than any other factor.
My biggest wish now is to be the kind of parent that my children (and every child) deserves.

I've been reading the "Discussing weight with girls" thread and this came up in one of the posts ...
I love my parents but what I wish they had done differently was ...
....not made me 'clean my plate' ...make food as a reward ....not compared me to a slimmer sister
How about you? Perhaps we can learn from each other so we can be careful what we teach our kids.
