Even though your party is at 3pm are there any guests traveling from a distance (30 miles or more)? This is just an opinion but if there are a few, its nice to serve a "meal" for those who where gracious enough to come. An easy way to fix this would be to have a meat tray (ham, turkey and cheeses) and finger rolls, or ham and turkey buns preassembled on smaller buns like a dinner rolls, condiments, pickles and chips (baked doritos, Sun chips, etc).

If you belong to Sam's Club they have GREAT Cakes really good $$$$. For my nephews birthday my mom called a local bakery and they wanted about $50 for 1/2 sheet. I got a 1/2 sheet at Sams for $15 and it tasted just as good if not better.
But yes, snacks and cake are fine at 3. Now at 5 or 6 I would ASSUME it was a meal.

| I think at 3 you are fine with cake and snacks. If you have a theme its easy to think of cheap snacks to go with it!

My daughter will be celebrating her first birthday on the 21st of December and we're having her a big party with the family. Eventhough it is going to be cold my husband is going to fix hamburgers and hot dogs on the gas grill and I'm having my parents, his parents and sisters bring things. I'll have to make two cakes. One small regular cake for my daughter to do what she wants to with and a big sugar free cake for everyone else because my mom, my father in law, and my husband's grandmother are all diabetics. I plan on taking lots of pictures with our digital camera and our regular camera plus taking a video so she'll have lots of special memories.

| Cake is all I'd expect unless otherwise invited to.

| Thanks for your suggestions! My family is a little weird anyway so I thought I better ask.

| With the party at three, people wouldn't expect more than cake/snacks. We have a family party for our daughter too (19 people and growing.) Make it simple and fun for your little one. Take lots of pictures.

| One of the party etiquitte suggestions I've heard was to hold your party off the meal hours if you didn't plan to serve more than cake and snacks. With a party at three that's all I'd expect to be there.

Hi! I usually do finger foods, veggie platters, and fruit platters. Since your party is at 3 p.m. I would only do snacks and cake. Could you ask your family members to bring something? Like a potluck? My family members always bring something.

| Hi! I have 5 girls so have done lots of parties. I have also done parties on a budget. Since your party is at 3, give your guests a buffet of fruits and veggies, along with several bowls of air-popped popcorn which can be flavored. Watermelon and cantaloupe slices are filling as well as a nice veggie platter with several low cal dips. You could even do cheese and crackers or make little pita pizzas - get pita bread, add a bit of tomato sauce and grated low fat cheese, pop in the oven, cut into bite sized pieces - great finger food and kids love as well. Add a nice punch, lots of balloons, face painting for the kids and lots of conversation and no one will even know they haven't had a meal! Good luck!

I'm really not sure what I want to do here, but money is tight so that's a factor. We're having a family-only party (and even that will be 16 people!!) on Saturday for my daughter's first birthday. The party is at 3PM. Is it okay to offer only snacks and cake or do we have to offer a meal? I originally thought I would do a cookout, but with all the different foods people will and won't eat, it's getting expensive to plan (like we would have to have beef, turkey, and Garden burgers, plus hot dogs for my brothers, just to cover what everyone eats!).
So what's the norm in this situation?
