STRAWBERRIPINK4 - I wish I could drink my tap water straight but it has a metallic taste (we have high iron content here) that actually makes matters worse for me. I have a water softener, and we use K-life (Potassium), but I just can't take it plain. It's worse straight from the well. So I resort to bottled water for water I am drinking plain. Tap water is fine to use when I'm adding flavor to it though.

Hi everyone,
I too get really bad acid reflux from drinking water, I actually have whats called GERD (Gastro Esophogeal Reflux disorder) so I am well aware of what to eat & not eat to keep this under control & water has always bothered me.
I too have resorted to crystal lite,I use the singles & only put a 1/2 a pack in a 4 cup bottle of water, so i really water it down but it seems to help. I can't do citrus of any kind so lemon water is out.

I haven't had the nausea, but I had to train myself to drink water. I'm used to keeping my 52 ounce jug full of Pepsi. The first few days I filled it with water, I hardly drank any. For me, the key is to sip it often. I keep it at my desk and drink it slow.

Wow Disturbed one, you have me stumped. I have helped many with health issues, and health is my hobby and hopefully will be my profession, but I'm not getting this water dilemma you're having. When I exercise hard (I run and compete for my college), I often get that icky feeling from water or any thing in my tummy for that matter. Consuming smaller quantities can help, but I'm wondering, does your water contain any minerals? The manufacturer may not list any, but Zinc on an empty stomach can be extremely nauseating. You tried tap water? treated water (tap) often contains traces of chlorine, which may form metal chloride complexes with any minerals in the water(ZnCl), allowing them to settle out of solution before they reach your lips and sensitive tummy. Plus, hate to break it to ya, but tap is much safer and more likely to be regulated than ANY bottled water. true story: the expensive perrier water of france contained a cancer causing compound for decades - it went undiscovered until recently, and also, deer park had some borderline contamination problems with their huge vats of water open to the wilderness - these findings I trust to be true as they came from my professors of public health at Johns Hopkins University. This is the extent of my understanding of water nausea as of now, hope you get better!

I have the same problem. Drinking plain water causes me to have reflux. I never get the reflux from drinking diet coke. I could never understand this. I'm glad to hear that other people have this problem too. My friends never believed me when I told them drinking water caused me to have severe burning and reflux. I also found that drinking crystal lite or Walmart generic brand or the flavored water does not cause this. Try some of the flavored water and see if it makes a difference for you, it does me. The Crystal Lite Sunshine orange is awesome and I can't believe it doesn't have any calories.

The first thing I do when I get up is to brush my teeth. When I rinse my mouth out, I also drink a cup of water right then & rhere while my mouth is frsh, so it tastes better & is easier to get down. Then I have a good breakfast, sipping water with it & some hot green tea. An empty stomach is full of acid, so you need to have something in it right away to stop the queasy feeling. Tea does count as water. Keep a glass of ICE water with you, it also tastes better than luke warm water & is easier to get down. Instead of gulping, which takes in air, try just sipping it, all day long. Fill a container with 64 oz of water, keep it chilled, eat your 6 small meals each day, and watch the water disappear along with your excess weight & see how energized you will feel once the toxins are washed from your body. Take care, Connie

Yeah, I know the ingredients are scary, but not as bad as some foods. Even before I started watching what I ate I was highly suspicious of the lengthy ingredient list on things like Doritios. Crystal Light is a lightweight when it comes to chemical concoctions.
I do like your idea of just plain lemon in the water. I'll give that a try too. I also thought about adding a small amount of cranberry juice - just enough to lightly flavor the water without adding a lot of calories.

DISTURBEDONE, thanks so much for sharing your solution. I'm going to be trying more sipping, and will be adding lemon or lime to my water to see if that helps. Will also try eating more soluble fiber.
As for the Crystal Light though, I'm so obsessive about the stuff I put in my body, and some of the ingredients scare me a little bit, especially the aspartame, artificial coloring, and maltodextrin. But if it helps you stay hydrated, that's the most important thing. Here's the description of what's in it, if you're interested:
"Citric Acid (Provides Tartness), potassium Citrate (Controls Acidity), Maltodextrin (From Corn) Aspartame (Sweetener), Magnesium Oxide (Prevents Caking), Contains Less Than 2% Of Natural Flavor, Acesulfame potassium (Sweetener), Artificial Color, Red 40 Lake."

I think I found a solution to my water problem. I bought some Crystal Light. I had no trouble drinking that this afternoon. I believe it counts as water because it has no caffeine, right? It does have calories, but not enough to mess with my grand total. I figure I can alternate a glass of plain water with a glass of crystal light and get my water in that way.

I have acid reflux and have always had problems with nausea from drinking water. If I sip on water throughout the day I don't feel as bad and have better success in sticking with it.
DRIEDLEAVES 6/12/06 4:36 P
You know, I'm kinda having the same problem. I'm not sure what it is. I have clean tap water, so I'm sticking to that, but don't think that's the problem. Maybe breaking it up throughout the day more would help?
One thing that really helps me keep track is using a water bottle that holds 4 cups of water. That way I know I only have to empty it twice. That kinda helps me break it all down in addition to keeping track. I try to empty it once by halfway through the day, and finish the second one by bedtime. No gulping down a cup at a time that way.
For me, it's a little bit of nausea, but more that it seems there's so much fluid in my digestive system and it feels really weird. Perhaps upping the amount of soluble fiber we have in our diets would help? Soluble fiber absorbs water.
Here's a list of foods with lots of soluble fiber in them that I just found in a Spark article. I'm going to try eating more of these, and see if that helps. If you run into a solution though, DISTRUBEDONE, do share, because getting 8 cups of water a day is very important. Here's that list:
"Foods rich in soluble fiber include: oatmeal, pasta, rice, potatoes, French bread, sourdough bread, soy products, barley, and oat bran. Nuts, beans, and lentils are also a good source of soluble fiber. However, nuts also include fat and lentils also contain some insoluble fiber."
Good luck!

I am tracking sodium and there are days when I actually go over the recommended amount, or very near. So I'm definitely not low. The funny thing is that I can drink flavored drinks until I feel like I could float away, but plain water bothers me. Maybe I need to try another brand, or maybe it's just a mental thing?
JILLIANWOLF 6/12/06 11:49 A
That happens to me when I haven't had enough sodium. Try eating before you drink anything or adding lemon or lime juice to your water.
DISTURBEDONE 6/12/06 10:47 A
If I drink more than 1 cup, especially on an empty stomach, I get queasy. I can drink a larger quantity of diet cola or even iced tea without this problem. It's hard to get in 8 cups a day if I stick to only a cup at a time and dietcola/tea doesn't count, right?
Not only does plain water leave me nauseous, but it also leaves this blah, metallic-like taste in my mouth. I buy gallon jugs of Absopure spring water, so I doubt that it is something in the water that is causing it. Thoughts?
