My son is 5 and has been struggling with uh, holding in his stool. I actually don't know if it would be considered full blown encopresis at this point, because he does poop on his own sometimes, and I don't think he's as constipated as others with this. He just doesn't seem to understand how the process works - you poop once a day, and you're done. For him, it's either multiple (6x plus a day) little ones, or something the size of a soda can! Literally. He's clogged the toilet multiple times.
He was going to a developmental peditrician for sensory issues, who kind of dismissed by saying kids train at different ages. His regular pediatrician says we just need to get him on a regular schedule by making him sit on the toilet at certain times.
I try to be so patient with him, but there's been times I've felt trapped in my own home because I KNOW he has to go, and I want him to go too. But after he's soiled a ton of underwear, it starts to wear on me and I get angry that he's not 'getting it' because he's an intelligent kid and I don't see what he's getting out of it.
I only hope it doesn't progress into full blown encopresis where the child stretches out the colon and loses sensitivity and is unable to hold the stool in.
Argh, the stuff we parents have to deal with!
