Well, England are through to the quarter finals, and a tough game against Portugal awaits. I'm sure it'll be nail-biting, dramatic, unbearable and scrappy game, but I'm hopeful (rather than expectant) that we'll do enough to get to the semi-finals.
So far, I've managed to get through the England (and other) games almost alcohol-free. I did allow myself one pint of Stella Artois during the Ecuador game, for my nerves! But I had come from a good workout at the gym, so I feel I was giving my body a little reward and reminding it that I'm definitely NOT starving it! I have to say, I've been pleased with my ability to resist the salty and fat-loaded snacks I'd normally munch my way through during the World Cup, and I seem to have maintained my steady 1-2lb per week weight loss throughout the month so far.

| Hi guys, sorry bout USA in the world cup, but extreamly happy to see England in the quarter finals!! Hope we're all losing weight? i've just started today but plan to do it...good luck

| Unfortunately, we were unlucky again today. Although I'll certainly give it up to the Ghanaian side. They have played extremely well since their opening loss. There's always 2010!!!

| What a disaster for England to lose Michael Owen like that, but at least we're through to the last 16 and have avoided Germany in the next round. The US were unlucky in a thrilling match with Italy, and now have a huge task on their hands to get through to the next round. Australia were so unlucky against Brazil, and deserved a better result. They were heroic on Sunday, and won over a lot of neutrals I bet. I hope they manage to get through to the next round too!

| I watched it. That was pretty good. I think the turning point was when Poland ended up shorthanded. Germany knew the opportunities would come after that. That makes Poland the first one to have their round of 16 hopes killed.

| What a great game between Poland and Germany. If anyone missed it, Germany broke the tie in extra time. Boruc played an absolutly awesome game, unfortunately in this tournament you're either the hero or the goat, and I think he's going to be the latter. Wow, talk about exciting.

| The Aussies are probably my 3rd favorite team in the world behind the USA and Ireland. I have been cheering the Aussies on since Ireland isn't in it.

The World Cup. Wow... For us Aussies down it is simply amazing. Our 3-1 win over Japan was our stunning debut and the very first time we've scored in any World Cup event. Are we stoked? You better believe it. Next target is the formidable Brazilians. Huge team to get over. But we've got a secret weapon in Guss H our Dutch coach so we're hoping for a good finish. Nice chatting guys.....

I'd rather watch the world cup. I love the game, and I'm also a referee. I like to watch as a referee and see if I would make different calls. Most of the time, they let things go that I would have called, at least at the levels I ref at. But that's why they are there, and I'm in a small town doing youth and adult games.
The US is going to have a hard time I think. Even Ghana played very aggressive last night. They definately need to play as a team for the next few games or they will be coming home for sure.

| They are holding there own this year. Right now they are in second place in their division, a lot better than the "other professional" team that calls Portland home.
|
|
|
|
| It would all depend on what the other sport was, and the significance of the game. I'd say 50/50 chance of watching the other game vs World Cup if the other sport was a meaningful game.

| Portland must've been pretty good to hold Sunderland to that draw, but Sunderland aren't even much competition EPL, which is why they are being relegated Coca-Cola Championship.

| Must say that my son, age 9, was disappointed that the College Super Regional supreceded the replay of the USA v. Czech match. I would rather watch football (soccer) than baseball. I took my son and I to a match this past summer between Portland Timbers v. Sunderland, and we had a blast! What fun it was to watch a match that resulted in a 0:0 tie.

| Hands down, the World Cup. I love for soccer. I have a MUTV.com membership, always watching live matches on Fox Soccer Channel, ordering the FA Cup final every year.

They did get handled today. Darn shame too, at least show up and make the rest of the world believe that we can play the game.
Quick poll, if the World Cup was on and a predominate American sport was also on, ie: football, baseball, basketball, would you watch World Cup or other?

| Okay, granted, he was trying to spin. But one thing is for sure. They need to get it together or they will be coming home soon.

| Donovan made that comment and I almost had to laugh. He was all but invisible compared to his normal self. If he wants his team to believe in itself then he should step it up like he can make a better presence next game. It was pathetic today.

Yeah, that was a heartbreaker. They struck early and struck hard. But that's what you get when you mess with the #2 team in the world. The US seem to lose their confidence after a while and just started playing sluggish. And Landon Donovan is right, they need to believe in themselves, or they will fall apart.
It will not be an easy task now. Italy is a squad fully loaded squad with players from Serie A. They come from some of the top teams: Juventus, AC Milan, and Lazio to name a few. Pray for us.

AARRRGHG !!!! What an absolutly HORRIBLE game the US played today. I can't believe that they got crushed like that, even when the Czech Republic lost the two best strikers on the team.
I love the game and am looking forward to the next month.

I will be watching The World Cup and cheering on the USA and Australia (They are taking Ireland's place for teams for me to cheer).
If matches are crucial for you, take a Walkman to the gym with you and exercise while listening to the matches, or if your gym has a TV, watch the matches while exercising.
If you are nervously snacking while England is playing (and you shouldn't be since you are in a easy group!!!), try snacking on some fruits and drinking some bottled water. Now if you are in a pub watching all of the matches, then that may be a problem.
I am more nervous than you. We are in the group of death: Czech Republic, Italy, and Ghana. You have Paraguay, Trinadad and Tobago, and Sweden. Sleeping should be easy for you guys.
Good luck!!!

OK, the World Cup is only a few days away, and I know that this is going to be one month of football heaven, but potentially a dietary hell.
I love the game, and I'm buzzing at the prospect of all that world class talent and sporting drama, but how do I stop myself falling off the dietary wagon, from what has been a very disciplined last couple of months?
I know that when I watch England play in games that matter, I end up drinking a couple of beers to try to calm my nerves, then snacking almost unconsciously. I don't know whether to just hit the gym more often in the next month, so I can have more calories to play with, and therefore be able to enjoy a couple of beers, or to look for some other alternatives for keeping my mouth occupied! Any ideas, tips?
How about a general World Cup forum anyway to share opinions, and hopefully get input from people around the globe enjoying THE sporting event of 2006?
