if your trip to asia was years ago and you have been eating normally since then no, i wouldn't attribute this to an eating disorder. i was extremely anorexic in my 20's. i would starve (150 calories a day!!!) during the weekdays and allow myself to eat (binge) on the weekends. my weight was 98 lbs, i lost my periods and was almost hospitalized. i ended up gaining about 50 lbs without even trying because my body was obviously in starvation mode (duh, huh?). eventually my metabolism kicked back in and i was able to lose weight but the eating disorder has stayed with me my entire life. it's been a struggle; i cannot eat normally or relate to food as others do. i have made peace with it but find that i have to really watch myself so that i don't start doing crazy things.

I highly suggest logging in and putting your food into the nutrition page of the spark people site. Do this every day, keeping your calories where they need to be, and your nutrition too. Be honest - only you see the records and this is a *teaching* tool, not a *beat yourself up* tool.

Hey, I had nachos for breakfast - but I'll have a green food smoothie and two boiled eggs for lunch. Every day, every meal is a chance to start anew.

Do your walking and excercize per your spark program.

Do this for at least 2 weeks, preferably 4 or more *religiously* before you start questioning the system or your body. Eating healthy is imperitive, but it will take weeks to see a positive result as your body has to not only absorb the nutrients, but cell turnover takes something like 10 days. So, that's the minimum amt of time it'll take to see a difference.

Since you mention yo-yo-ing, getting into a routine of eating properly, 3 meals a day, is the most important step. You may gain weight, yes, but if you're within your calorie range, and within your excercize range then your body will normalize.

Make some soup and keep it handy in the frig. I just posted my favorite beet soup in the recipe forum, and the New Orleans Red Bean recipe from the recipe area of Spark are both really good. Solid nutrition, too. I keep soups on hand as they're fast food (the beet soup is good cold), fairly low in calorie, and yet if home made with quality materials (I favor organics) they provide good nutrition.

Keep going - youre doing great!

Well, I guess you could say I did have an eating disorder. Actually a few years back I made a trip to Asia for a few months and became really sick. I stopped eating there and lost an extreme amount of weight, and had trouble getting back on track. I gained 15-20 pounds and lost the same in a small period of time. I was up and down... Something similar happened to you? Any good advice? Any pointers or suggestions?

i had my metabolism tested using that thing, but i had it done three weeks in a row, and all three weeks they were totally different. the test lady said they are accurate, but if you breathe more deeply while taking it than you do in real life, it won't work.

anyways, how long have you been trying at this. it takes a little time for your body to adjust to the changes.

i hope you don't take this the wrong way ok - are you coming out of an eating disorder or a very restrictive diet? i only ask because something similar happened to me back in my 20's.

Thank you all for your reply:) Yes i have talked to my doctor; in fact, i have even talked to a dietician, but i still am gaining weight. I thought id post here before i went after them again:) My concern is not that i look bad or that im overweight, i cant seem to figure out how or why i am gaining...

Jillian wolf, i had my metabolism tested using the medgem system thingy....at the local hospital here. You breathe into something for a few minutes and it determines it. Umm..i think u can actually buy it.

How were you able to detemine your metabolic rate?

1. how much do you excercize
2. how much water are you drinking
(dont bother to answer me back... for your thought)

Firstly, if you're excercizing, your weight gain may be muscle mass. Also, look at the charts for your "ideal" weight. And then recall that for my height and weight, (5'6") my "ideal" is 130 unless I'm in shape and then, it is 150. So you really cant look at the scale alone.

If you dont like your dimensions, then do weights to emphasize the smaller area. For instance, I used to obsess on my hips (I'm pear shaped) but instead I"m now focusing on my bust with the weights. Better muscle tone at the bust means my bustline will be firmed up and lifted making that area look better.

Your weight may actually be too low. What you want is **healthy** not model-skinny. If your diet and excercize is within healthy ranges, then dont worry about it. If you feel you should worry, seek the in-person opinion of a local nutritionist.

Hello! I'm having some trouble with my weight...I am not overweight, but for some reason i keep gaining weight. I recently found out my metabolim is too slow. For someone my age it should be 1600 or more and mine is 1000. After this discovery, I have limited my calorie intake, but am still gaining! I consume about 1100 and i exercize. I heard not getting enough calories can do that as well...any ideas or suggestions about this? I am confused and frustrated. After all this hard work, I am still not losing my gained weight and am not able to mantain.
