Oh yeah, I know. I wasn't saying you actually wanted to shoot muskets at them. :P

But yes.. I've been 170lbs for about the past 6 years. Even in boot camp, I only dropped to 160. It seems every time I try to gain, I gain the wrong weight. :/ I'll go up to 175, decide I'm getting fat, and drop back to 170. Even now, for the past few months I've been eating right, and working out- getting a lot more tone, and a lot more strength, and I'm at *gasp* 171.

But, I'm still in Africa. When I get back to the states, I just need to eat more meats and stay out of the fast food sink-holes. :)

I wasn't implying that we start a brawl Sarge, just stating the obvious. The majority of the people here are here to lose weight and tone up.....while you and I are amongst the minority that are looking to gain weight and tone up. It is the same way for most of the participants in my weekly Skinny Jean Club that I run. I guess it is one of those constants no matter if it is in cyber space or in the real world. My words were not intended to offend anyone, but it is what it is.

We are definitely in the minority....I suddenly have a feeling about the way that General Custer may have felt at the Little Big Horn!

Right on, I thought I was the only one trying to gain around here. :)

Thanks for the info.

Hi, DOC

It sounds like you're doing very well. Nice work.

In general, a gain of .5 to 1 lb of lean muscle per week is very good. The capacity to add muscle mass and reduce body fat is partly determined by genetic potential (homone levels, body type, ratio of muscle fiber types, etc) and by how close you've already come to fulfilling this potential, as well as by diet and training routine. So it's very difficult to say what you can expect in terms of continuing muscle gains or fat losses. Not everyone (not very many, actually) can achieve the low bodyfat levels (around 4-8%) or degree of muscle development you see in competitive bodybuilders or cover models.

Also, your body doesn't convert fat into muscle, of course, or vice versa. Those two tissue types are completely distinct and independent. So, the amount of fat you have available to lose doesn't predict how much muscle you can add, or what your "natural" body composition will turn out to be.

Given all this, there really isn't a standard formula you can use to predict weight or muscle gain over the long term. At some point, as you get closer to your genetic potential, your rate of muscle gain will slow down, just as weight loss tends to slow down as you get closer to your natural set point. And if you continue to eat more calories than you can use at that point, you will begin to store those extra calories as fat, rather than using them to increase muscle mass. Stepping up your cardio exercise is a pretty good way to manage this problem when you get to the point that your body composition starts to stabilize. That can allow you to continue eating enough extra to support any added muscle gains your body can produce.

Hope this helps.

I have always operated under the rule that a respectable loss of body fat is .5% per week or 2%per month and if done while gaining weight the assumption is that you have successfully converted that percentage of fat to lean muscle. Last time I measured I had gained 7 1bs with a loss of 10.9% body fat in a 5 week period. Does anyone know what is considered a realistic goal to gain in pounds/time while strength training? Not sure if you can generalize, but in the same way that it is said that 2lbs per week is average when losing weight, I figure there must be some similar stat headed in the other direction.
