I definitely agree "up to" are the key words. If you make a drastic change and are very heavy, you may do that well the first week, mainly water weight. But if you are like me and have tried every diet there is and only have a small amount to lose (25 pounds sure looks like a lot when you are 5'0") you won't get that kind of results. I'm glad I finally learned that because I get discouraged easily when I don't match the "marketing".

Well, people who are very obese can lose 5lb a week the first couple of weeks because the diet change is more drastic for their bodies.

However, even then, that is still a lot of weight to lose in a week. Very unhealthy, IMO.

The only time I lost by extreme measure was when I did the Dr. Phil weight challenge and even though I was eating the whole time, I was starved the whole time. The food didn't taste good to me and I couldn't sustain it. I can sustain this.

To lose any weight in the first few weeks you need to be SOMEWHAT OVERWEIGHT beleive me, ive lived it.

One to two pounds a week is a reasonable weight loss. Any more than that and one is bordering on some really unhealthy and unsafe eating practices. I've been on SP for almost a month and have stayed in the first stage (Fast Break) for the entire time to give myself some practice in healthy eating. I've lost a little over 5lbs, and fallen away from my eating plan a few times, but I feel great and I'm not in any rush.

I just read an article that it called "Extreme Fat Loss" and you pretty eat below your recommended daily intake...but the article does say that it is unhealthy and the only people tha should/could do it are people with an "overweight BMI", but once they get into the "heathly BMI", then they need to work on their daily intake. Apparently it is very dangerous and there are some people that end up hospitalized.

I agree that dropping 5-10 lbs. per week is not a healthy goal. So what's the rush? Trying to get to a spot to eat all you want again -- gain back the weight? It will never happen.

We have to face the fact that we need to learn how to eat in a healthy manner to maintain goal weight for life. Give up the yo-yo dieting that makes us nuts.

Slow and steady is the key to learning about how our bodies react to food. LEARNING is the key, not dumping weight fast and resorting to the same bad habits that put the weight on in the first place.

To lose weight is not a DIET -- it's a lifestyle change FOREVER, else we're doomed to a fat fate.

I certainly agree, with slow and moderate weight loss. I was merely making a friendly suggestion. I am an avid reader and like to pass on interesting info. It did address your 5-10 question. I wouldn't suggest you try a fad diet, just that the information in the book might be of interest to you.

i maintain that i believe slow and steady is the key. any fad diet that tells me i can lose "X" amount of weight in a certain fast time frame cannot be a healthy lifestyle to follow.

i'll stick with a well balanced diet and consistent exercise.

Hi there, I am also a believer in slow steady weight loss. I have dropped from 186 to 146, and my goal weight is 126. I am in a healthy range, so any loss along the way is awesome. I do however have the name of a book, and author who did publish a diet plan that does work well, and is healthy for a short period of time. It is called "The Thin Commandments" by Stephen Gullo, PhD. The basic diet it based on a core plan of eggs, fish and high calcium food, along with high fiber crispbread. You also get to eat green and white veggies and others in moderation. When you start you commit to 10 days, and can lose up to 10-14 lbs.Up to is the key! I did try it last summer, and lost 7 lbs in a week. I was very strick for the 10 day period. After that you modify the diet to maintain or lose more following a higher calorie plan. I am still using the principles of this now. I choose fish and egg whites a great deal in my meal planning, along with bulking up on the green veggies. You might want to look it up. I did recently pick up a copy on ebay as my old one was worn out. Just a suggestion. mumtowandz

I lost 10 lbs the first week but that was mainly water weight. The second week I lost 2.2 lbs. I'm maintaining 1400 calories a day and so far I have been pretty satified. If only I can keep up the 1 to 2 lb weight loss per week now. Lynn

it's not me losing at that rate. i totally agree with all of you...slow and steady. 1-2 lbs per week will be fine by me. it took me 15 years to get to this weight. i don't expect it to be gone in a few weeks.

i've just seen people report "i lost 10 lbs the first week" and then 3 weeks later report another 10 lb. loss. i just don't think that's safe or the way this program was set up to work.

thanks for all your responses.

Losing weight fast is not good for you. Everyone has mentioned that.

However, going below 1200 calories (or your minimum based on height, age, etc) can also cause you to slow down weight loss because your body goes into hoarding mode.

Forget what others are doing - and work for your own healthy lifestyle. One may actually gain weight while slowly losing inches as fat is depleated but muscle is built.

That's one reason I really dont know what I weigh. I have not weighted myself for a couple months. My jeans are my measurement. When they are feeling comfortable, I know I've lost what I had gained over the last couple months. When they get loose, I know I'm on my way. When I can buy the next size smaller - hey, that's the goal! In the meantime, my tape measure is on my desk. I dont even own a scale.

Remember, too, that this is on the honor system. People may input any numbers they want. Shaving a couple extra pounds off their numbers may temporarily make them feel better. But this is about health - not what numbers one types into the computer.

You're doing great!

i've steadily lost 2.2 lbs per week, since i started SP on April 16th. of course my weight went up and down 1lb or so due to a lot of reasons but i know this is a loss i can maintain and it's healthy also. so much weight can be lost if u get rid of the water (high sodium/ low sodium, not enough water intake/ enough water intake, b4 period/after period...and stuff like that).

I lost about 6 pounds in the beginning 2-3 weeks, after that I haven't had any consistent weight loss of 1-2 pounds. I just want a healthier, sustainable lifestyle that makes me feel fit!

Men can lose more than 2 pounds/week because they have a larger muscle mass (= higher metabolism) to begin with.

What they said :)

SparkPeople has it designed to lose weight slowly and SAFELY. Any more than a pound or two per week is too fast and unsafe. And as mentioned by others, that weight comes back after you stop doing whatever was done to lose the weight that quickly in the first place.

I agree with KMWheel and her friend Brande -Slow and Steady wins the race. It's hard to remember that sometimes, but it really is the best way.

I agree with what the others say. I lost 5 lbs the first week, but I always have a big loss when I start a diet. This time I'm not dieting though, I'm just making better choices. From here on out I expect an average of 1-2 lbs a week. But I will have weeks when I lose none and then the next weeks its a "swoosh" as I call them and I will lose 4 lbs or so. I say don't look for a quick fix, b/c I have done them all, and the weight always comes back.Slow and steady wins the race, as my friend Brande says!

you often will loose the water weight at first and that can be rather high

but if the water weight is off, I don't think there is a way to loose much more than a couple pounds a week unless you severely lower you calories to 1200 a day AND exercise with a lot of cardio for several hours a day...and I dont think you can keep that intensity up for long.

there are all kind of things you can do to your body to lose
muscle and water fast. It is a temporary fix. For example I have never lost more than 2 pounds a week never I vAry from 1/2 to 2 pounds per week but the good news is I am losing fat. not water, not muscle, but fat. this program was designed to give people a lifestyle change but sure there are a lot of diets out there and the minute you come off of them well you probably know the story...my viewpoint diets don't work in the long term

Could be tons of different reasons. I know the heavier I am, the faster it came off at first, then slows right down.

I lost quite alot quickly (8-10 pounds) when I went from an extremely high sodium diet to very low. I retained alot of fluid and was puffy all the time. So although the weight I lost was fluid, it was also extra weight I had been carrying around for years.

Overall, the target is 1-2 pounds per week, altho many hit long plateaus. (I sure have).

Some people do go below the recommended range, and that's never a good idea. It's unhealthy and results in stored fat (and usually gaining the weight back plus some).

Just follow the recommended program, ask lots of questions, track your food, read the resource material, and you'll do great!

i see there are people that lose 5-10 lbs the first week. that i can understand.

what about losing 5-10 lbs the following weeks? is it that they are exercising it all away? or cutting below the 1200 calories a week?

i thought SP was set up to lose 1-2 lbs per week because that is what is proven safe and proven to have more success keeping the weight off.

someone fill me in please.
