This is my first day here and I really appreciate the advice about the belly fat.

Guys,

Isn't it great to be able to have a site where we can share practical "how to" information without all the fluff. I think it rocks. But, just in case anyone is missing the ladies input on this subject: (in a slightly elitist feminine voice) "The best way to lose belly fat is to buy to buy yourself a new pair of shoes every time you lose ten pounds."

[AND NOW THE FINE PRINT] This message was posted for the purpose of humor only. Anyone offended, shocked, disgusted, angered, or in any other way negatively affected by this comment, please take the following steps immediately. 1)Accept my apology, no harm was intended. 2) Forgive. It will help strengthen your character. 3) Get a life and learn to laugh more. It'll make you easier to get along with.

Wishig you all the best,
Mike

I was really happy to see the responses in this forum. I know so many people who do crunches all day so they can get smaller waist sizes. I can't figure out where anyone gets the idea that you can burn fat in a particular part of your body (marketing and informercials probably). Seems like everyone here has the same story. The fat goes away in the opposite order it got put on. I found this be very noticable the other day while getting my hair cut. I didn't have the extra chin showing above the collar. And I'm starting to see my arms beginning to cut a little too. The fact that I can notice these changes (and especially that other people are noticing) gives me quite a bit of inspiration to keep it up. And....I do notice that my pants are fitting a little more loosely than before, despite the fact that I still feel like I haven't lost a thing on my waist.

Hehe... sadly,

Prepare to watch your face, shoulders, and forearms get skinny. Places you couldn't care less about.

It's tough, but we all do it. I still have a fat gut after losing 65 pounds. :(

All I can do is go harder!

This I found to be the case too. It is strange how "fat" my head was. Something I never noticed I guess. Funny.

Yep, same for me too. All my extremities (including hands and feet) got smaller, the love handles are greatly reduced but the belly fat is still hanging around. I guess that means I'll have to keep up the cardio! And core exercises, even though I can't stand them...

Yup, head, arms, chest all burned off quickly for me. The sides went next... still working on the belly and the back... not much to go, but frustrating none the less that it is still there.

It always goes from the outside in. My arms are pretty well defined, my legs are getting cut. my gut looks like I've been drinking Kirin all day.

CARDIO....CARDIO.....CARDIO....THEN 15 OF abs after the ONE HOUR of cardio....you will see the difference.

Absolutely. My trainer told me this when I started and it is true -- at least for me. From the top of my head to half-way through my chest is leaner as are my legs. Still working on the lower back and stomach fat reserves. The amazing thing for me was when I put on an old pair of sunglasses -- they fit -- loosely. Never knew my head was fat.

Just wondering if everyone else has noticed what I have - fat seems to disappear from the head down to the chest, then the legs, then lower back and last int the abdomen area. When it comes back, it does so in basically the same order?

I've always operated assuming if I want the belly fat off, I have to burn everything else off first.

You cannot target belly fat directly as many people have said. Here is what you need to do in general.

My Ten Commandments

1)Nutrtion first and foremost, garbage in garbage out!
2)Eat small and eat often, 5-6 a day with snacks.
3)know how many calories you need to live and how many you need to burn
4) work with Target heart rates..invest in a monitor
5)weight train, muscle burns more calories than fat!
6) Cardio for a strong heart.
7) 7-8 hours of rest a must to rebuild.
8) relaxtion sounds at least once or twice a week, invest in a nano they are great!

9)Deny yourself nothing, whatever you can't have you will want. Instead make very specific food choices, remember your body is like a fire. Put a big log on it and it will go out. Put small pieces of wood chips on it continuosly and it will burn hotter and brighter than ever.

10) Have patience and believe in yourself, see yourself for who you really are.

Hope this helps some of you.

Yup! Certainly would be nice to simply point your finger at the fat spot and say, "Go away durn it!" But if it was that easy no one would be overweight!

Eliminating the stress in my life - winning the lottery, they all sound like nice ideas but the odds of it happening seem low. . . I always envy people that can not worry about things. I've found I actually feel less stressed since I have been getting some regular exercise.

Oh man - I recognize the frustration in your body doing whatever the heck it feels like. I just measured my "fat points" a couple of days ago, and the one area I was comfortable with already was the only place I had lost inches!!! Ain't that just the joke?

Keep it up y'all.

Could be sheer coincidence, but when I eliminated a lot of stress from my life I found two things. One: I was eating healthier since I was now paying attention to what I was eating/drinking... and... Two: I was more focused due to the elimination of stress distractors. Getting rid of all??? May be tougher than any of us care to tackle. Getting rid of some??? I think we all could use that.

Chris,

I don't think any of the trainers would argue that ab work can help shape your core. But you've also had a healthy diet and good cardio. Combine all that and you get the awesome results you've seen. Great job!!!!

Gents

I have learned from my Personal Trainer that the abs heal very quickly. We do a very intense 5 minute ab workout every day. The results for me have been tremendous (36" waist to 32" in 3 months).

I believe the trick was having someone to push me well beyond a level that I would have reached alone, kind of like Boot Camp. Because of the focus on the core, I lost faster around the waist than I did the neck and chest.

Maybe one of the Certified Trainers on this site will disagree with the approach, but I do abs 4 days a week (it's that important to me). By the way, all of the men in my family within 100 miles have HUGE beer guts. I was heading in that direction myself.

I've been told that belly fat is about two things. #1 is genetics. The more successful your ancestors were in storing fat for times of low food availability, the longer they lived and so you are here (that's the good part).
#2 2 is also genetics and depends on whether your body type is a Pear and you store fat around your hips, or whether your body type is an Apple and you store body fat around your belly.

The answer, in both cases, is to live like your ancestors. Don't eat anything you don't pick, kill or harvest yourself; and run like h*** from things that are bigger and meaner than you!

The article about visceral (or belly or abdominal) fat is at this link among others:

http://www.azstarnet.com/dailystar/printDS/96081.php

or google (using SparkPeople search of course) for visceral fat stress.

Gregg,

Welcome to SP!!! As was already mentioned, there is ZERO way to target where you burn fat from . Unfortunately you just have let the body decide what it wants to do. The best bet is to eat healthy and get as much cardio as you can. This will help you body to burn fat more efficiently which means you'll start burning more fat.

The idea of lean meats and low glycemic index sounds good, but won't do a thing for belly fat. If it was that simple people would never have to worry about lypo-suction.

Anyway, welcome to SP, this is a great place. Feel free to ask questions any chance you get.

Most experts agree that there is no way to target where you burn the fat from. All you can do is set up a program , like SP's that will force your body to burn fat and your body will choose where to burn it from. Unfortunately, where you most want to burn the fat from is the first place your body will store it and the last place it will want to take it from.

Be patient, stay with the program and over time you will see all those great muscles you've been building with the crunches!

Hey Dawgman - welcome to SparkPeople.

The most recent stuff I've read about "belly fat" is that there is some strong linkage to stress causing the body to store fat in that area. The body is so complex - amazing really - and we know so little. It isn't so easy to reduce stress but worth a short.

This is one of those really frequently asked questions. It is sometimes hard to find the FAQs here but click on Community then Fitness and Exercise and the look just down from the top for "Click here to read our frequently asked Fitness and Exercise questions" - then a ways down.

Hope this helps and welcome -

Hey Guys!
I am new to SP and find it a very resourceful site.

I have read in some of the diet books that you can eat lean meats for 2 weeks along with low glycemic indexed foods and this should work for isolating the belly fat problem. Any thoughts about that?

I know doing multiple crunches and the like will build the muscles under the fat but does little to reduce the fat itself.

I been using the nutrition guide in SP and adhereing to the schedule.

Just looking for a laser targeted approach to burn off the belly fat along with a nutrition schedule targeted to reducing belly fat. There may not be such an animal --but thought I'd get some input from you guys!

Thanks
Gregg
