If the wrist is sore, there is a good chance that the tendons are a little inflamed due to forshortening of the muscles in the belly of your forearm that are responsible for grip strength. These are called the flexors of the forearm and I have found it very effective both personally and professionally for my patients who are golfers, tennis players and believe it or not water skiiers to stretch those muscles so as to facilitate lengthening of them to reduce that soreness.

One great way besides going palm to palm (like you are a budhist monk praying) and pressing down.....is to actually get some cream (grab some of your wifes moisturizer...preferably the cheap stuff) and with the thumb of the opposite hand slide down along the length of your forearm from the INSIDE corner of your involved arms elbow and slowly slide and compress with a pressure of a 5 on a scale of 0 to 10 down toward the wrist on a slight angle toward the thumb. Repeat that slowly along the rest of the real estate of the forearm until you cover the whole surface of your forearm.

You will hit upon some OOOOOOiiiiesss and OWWWwwwiess as my little girl calls them. Those are the knots aka trigger points which are the areas of the forearm muscles that are tightening up and filling with lactic acid. Do this and you will have less soreness, more control and endurance with your grip.

PS when you are in that monk prayer position...pray for a good game.

Hey Matt,

What kind of driver do you use off the tee?

Sean,

definitely sounds like a grip issue, most blisters come from improper grips or "re-gripping". Re-gripping is wher you change your grip in the middle of the swing. Movement = friction = blisters. The sore wrist could entirely be from not playing for a while. Many people don't realize the muscles you use in golf aren't the same muscles you use in every day activities. I'm glad you're getting out there having some fun!

Thanks Matt! That's good advice. I hit a bucket of balls and practiced putting a little bit this weekend. I didn't feel TOO bad but could definitely make some improvements. Especially with my long irons...I always have trouble with those.

Two things I noticed that don't seem right are A) I blistered/tore skin off the outside of the middle finger on my right hand (my grip must be mess up eh?) and B) My left wrist is a bit sore today.

Overall though it went pretty well. Thanks again for the advice.

My best recommendation is to work on the short game. It won't take long to get your long game to where you left off lst time you played. The short game is often the part that takes longer to get back in shape.

Also, most guys get back into playing and don't warm up properly. This causes poor posture and a poor swing. This leads to bad habits and an unpleasant round of golf. Warm up properly on the driving range, stretch a little, and most of all.....ENJOY yourself. We're all just lucky to be out there playing golf. Don't worry about a bad shot, or two, or 100. Just enjoy yourself.

More general stuff to work on for my game so I don't develop bad habits before I develope good ones. (reality is I probably won't have enough time to play to develop good ones :-)

Hey Rocker! The info Niteman gave you is certainly good advice. My PGA instruction manual has a full section dedicated to stretching and exercising for golf. When I get home I'll take a look and see what I can find for you.

I'm going to do some streaching befor my next round - I never feel like I get loose until the 3rd or 4th hole, by that time i've already done some damage to my score.

I've got a whole series of back stretching/strengthening exercises that I've put under a heading of 'back set' that I do as one of my user entered exercises for every strength workout. I've accumulated them from Doctor's pamphlets and on line sources and books over the years, but most of them are available here in one form or another. Punch on the "resource center" tab and hunt for exercises and articles and the "ask the expert" search section. There's a wealth of good stuff there. Also do a Google for back pain. You'll find way more than enough back stretches and exercises to satisfy your needs, it's just a matter of picking the ones you're comfortable with. Hamstring stretches help too, since that seems to be related to back pain in some way. It's a good idea to add core, back and lower body exercises to your routine if you don't already do them, since strong muscles in and around the back help prevent strains and pains there. Hope this helps.

I need to do the warming up routine before hitting a ball. Can you suggest some that will help loosen my back up. I always end up pulling a muscle ( nothing serious, just annoying ) because I don't loosen up properly. It affects the rest of the round.

Well it wasn't too bad a day here either. But thanks for bragging!

Haha,

Hi Denise. If you were here today you probably wouldn't mind the mid-west. Beautiful day...about 75 degrees and sunny. All the green is coming out and there are flowers on the trees. Nice!

Thanks for the tips Matt! I haven't played much the past couple of years but I do enjoy it when I get a chance. My parents actually live on a golf course and I play less now than I did before they moved there....go figure.

I've got some Calloway Irons...probably 5-6 years old now but not used all that much. 2 drivers...a Taylormade burner bubble and an old school Big Bertha Warbird (hand me down).

It's funny, when I hit the graphite Taylormade it feels/sounds like I really smack it harder, but the steel shaft Calloway goes at least as far, or farther. I think it (calloway) is a 9 degree and the TM is a 10 or 10.5.

If I could just hit it straight and far consistently that's good enough for me right now. But one day it would be nice to be able to work the ball. Not enough time for practice right now.

Oh...yeah, we met when you two were out. I sat with you guys for a few minutes at lunch.

Great to hear from you guys and thanks for your passioin for SparkPeople!

Yup, always glad to help in any way I can. Were you around when we visited SP last summer? I could have helped ya out a little then if I'd known. =)

Fitness tips for golf.....1) Core strength. A solid core will help prevent injury and increase balance. 2) Stretches for flexibility. Combining core strengt with flexibility is a golfers dream!

As far as the weight loss and my golf game...lol...well, my game went down hill for the first couple years. I had to adjust to there not being so much weight to balance around. I'm finally starting to hit the ball better now. When I was fat I was a scratch player. After losing weight I've gone back and forth from a 5 to 7 handicap. I'm slowly working it down though and my new clubs should help since they will fit me better. I used to be +1/2" over length, 2 degrees flat, and extra stiff shaft. My knew clubs will be standard length, 1 degree flat, and stiff shaft.

But enough blabbering about my stuff. I'm always willing to do what I can to help people out. Whether it's a tip for your game or helping you find the right deal on clubs, just let me know.

Wow...cool...we can get golf club advice from Matt! Wish you were here in Cincinnati Matt so I could take some lessons from you.

Problem with my drivers is I tend to "work the ball" when I'm not trying to :-)

Any fitness advice to get the body good shape for golf? Curious, how has your game changed since you got more fit?

Great to have you in our community Matt!

rotflmao.....Chris...great post.....except....I don't do Macs. =) Great computers, but I'm partial to PCs, especially since ALL my software is PC.

None-the-less, I'm still glad to help with golf advice any time you wish. 06 Berthas aren't a bad club at all. But if you want to work the ball at all, cuts, draws, low, high, etc....they're hard to use. Very forgiving club but designed to hit the ball high and straight. I just ordered a new set of Titleist last week, I can't wait for them to get here.

Top driver in our shop right now are the New Titleist, Ping and Mizuno. Followed closely by Cobra and a distant Taylor Made and Nike.

Welcome back Matt,

I could have used your support prior to buying another set of Irons (ended up with 06 Berthas). Thankfully, I saw the light prior to buying another driver. My driver is now in the closet where it belongs...probably for a year or so.

I'm going to be playing in an Amateur tour in Charlotte and need every shot to hit the fairway. I'm going to play with nothing hotter than a 3W. The moral of my story is that I need golf advise and you obviously need laptop assistance. We can trade expertise.

Buy a Macintosh next time your PC takes a dump!!

Nah! It's not the alcohol, that dries too fast. Must be the lime and salt. That would get sticky and gritty. Gotta' be that.

Dean,

I don't think the first six pack is the problem, it's most likely from the Tequila chasers.

Hey, Matt

Just try to stop spilling your beer onto the new laptop, before it starts having the same problems as the last one, OK? You get pretty sloppy after that first six-pack.

Josh....yup...Dell. We've had good luck with Dell so I figured we'd try another one. =)

Niteman....yeah, this one was $999-$300 "coupon", Shipping was free, just hd to pay for the computer and tax. I looked at the "gamer" versions, but I play all my games on XBox and PS2. If I play any computer games I use the desktop for them. 2gb of Ram would be fun, but not needed for my use. And I'm not too concerned about the video card since I don't use it for games. I think their fully loaded XPS machine comes in around $2800 now.

I think that's the one they sent an e-mail or two about that I've been lusting after. Of course, the version I want is a little more than $750, but it always is. The gamers version comes with a real honest-to-goodness video card and 2 gig of RAM. I'm gonna' get one... the day after I hit the lottery.
