We watched that the other night. Good PPV. Hughes absolutely destroyed Gracie. I figured he would win, but I didn't think he would destroy Gracie that badly.
Now I can't wait til UFC 61. They just announced a double main event.....Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock.....and Andre Arlovksy vs Tim Silvia. Man....it's gonna be awesome!!!!
Arrghhh!! UFC 60 is on PPV right now.... *Forty bucks!*

I agree 100%.
In boxing, your only options are to dish out or abosorb punishing punches to the head (or body, but they're used more to set things up, I think.) Also, the hand wrapping and larger gloves just allow you to hit HARDER than the UFC's regulation gloves.
UFC allows you more options to defend yourself, and more options for offense. As a result, we have not seen the brain damage and death like with boxing.
I've said the same thing! So far we've yet to see any deaths result from the "Octagon". While there have been a handful of serious injuries, fighters always recover and fight again. I don't think we'll see the same brain damage from MMA like we do from boxing.
MMA definitely appears brutal, but these guys train for this. The refs are are awesome about stopping fights when needed. In boxing, if one guy is pounding the other the ref won't step in until the guy is knocked out.
Mixed martial arts allows you so many more ways to defend yourself. Boxing requires that you stand there and take blows to the head. If you try to tie your opponent up the ref steps in and breaks it up. I'd almost side with your TKD instructor.
I wonder how the percentage of serious injury per 100 fights in each sport would compare? I wonder if we'll see old mixed martial arts fighters walking around with serious brain damage years after their careers are over?

Hey Matt
I have heard the there is no reality, only perspective. We must be desensatized. So that must mean that hockey is warm and cuddly.

| It's funny, I agree that boxing sometimes seems so civilized, yet my TKD instructor won't watch boxing because she says it's so brutal.
| Besides boxing seems so civilized (aside from the ear bitting). Even the old man Randy Couture could put Tyson down or make him tap
| I agree....boxing has no excitement around it anymore.
| Considering the current state of boxing (heavyweight division) I think UFC will eventually eclipse it in the amount of attention it draws. Plus most of the fighters in UFC are pretty marketable. They're more like average joes in their personality. I haven't seen an earbite yet in UFC.
| Yeah, back then you were either a grappler or a striker. Now you don't stand a chance if you don't have a little of everything.
| Last night on Spikes TV's "UFC Unleashed" they dedicated the whole show to vintage Royce Gracie matches. It really showed how the UFC has evolved since the early days. Today's fighters seem to be much more well rounded.
| Yeah, I've seen that fight before as well. They call him the Gracie Hunter becaue he had already beat 4 different Gracies before that fight. He did break the guys arm, pretty brutal. I love Pride just as much as UFC.
Just caught the end of a "Pride Fighters" (I think?) match on Fox Sports. There was an Oriental guy who beat a guy who must have a large family involved in the sport (Gracey?). They call him the Gracey hunter, if I have the right name and that's what he did. They kind of glossed over the end of the match. Although they showed it, they didn't discuss it, just said the Oriental guy had done it again. Unless my eyes deceived me, he broke the guys arm pretty severely. Imagine they can't dwell on that aspect of it too much without attracting the attention of the anti-everything crowd?
| I wouldn't fight anyone in the UFC, they'd kill me! lol
| Who's ready to try out for the UFC? Would you get in the ring and if yes with who?
| Yeah... you *have* to respect Royce for bringing mixed-martial-arts fighting to the mainstream of the US. However, I think the smart money is on Matt Hughes. However... it isn't impossible for Royce to catch him - Hughes only barely escaped a triangle choke from Charuto (he went on to win a decision, though I think Charuto won) and he got caught in the the same armbar twice in two different fights by Dennis Hallman. So... Hughes is submit-able... but I think he'll win.
| Even if Gracie sits and waits for Hughes, he'll have a hard time. Have you seen the last two fights Hughes had against Trigg? Trigg had him in a rear-naked-choak and couldn't submit him. Hughes stays so relaxed and waits for the right time. He's freakishly strong and ends up overpowering everyone. I think it will be fun to watch, but Gracie is going to have to pull some magic out to win it.
| I look forward to the Gracie/Hughes fight, but I wonder if the new UFC format will hinder Royce. I remember so many of his fights lasting a long time with Royce in "the guard" and waiting for an opportunity to either strangle or joint lock his opponent. I think his fight with Dan Severen (sp?)was one of the most amazing matches I've ever seen.
| Yeah, they show the new ones on Thursday then re-air it on Sunday.
| I think "Ultimate Fighter 3". is on Spike TV tonight
LosingIt,
It depends on what you watch. They have some "newer" stuff on there such as the "Ultimate Fighter 3". ALL the major new fights are pay-per-view. UFC now has a PPV just about every month. Next month will be fun. The main event is Matt Hughes vs Royce Gracie. Gracie is still talented, but Matt Hughes is the best wrestler (pound for pound) in the world. While anything can happen, Gracie is 39 and Hughes is in his 20s and at the top of his game.

Chrissmith,
Yeah, I think the one they're advertising for the 1st is #52, so they are old. I'm glad I looked anyway, because I forget about those channels and they have some pretty good shows there if you remember to check out their programming schedule, which I never do.
| thanks NITEMAN3D, You can also check their schedule on the INHD site. KE7CWM

The UFC fights on INHD are nice but always very old. I believe the last UFC fight on INHD was UFC 51? To put it in perspective, I just watched UFC 59 while in Florida last week.
If you didn't get to see it, please don't read any further.
Tim Sylvia took his belt back with a very solid right hand. Definitely worth seeing again.

There's an Ultimate Fighter card on the INHD program schedule for May 1st at 1am and 10pm, but it doesn't say I or II and it doesn't say live or rerun? Here's the link inside the quotes: "http://www.inhd.com/product.jsp?prodId=31383&mp=cb2"

| I used to watch UFC back when it didn't have weight divisions and such. I tried watching it recently, but couldn't get into it. Guess it has changed too much for me.

Matt,
I missed it. They show the UFC on INHD1 and 2 as reruns but have not seen any for a while now, maybe soon. I did get 25 pts for 90 days today, that makes me happy

Holy Cow!!!!!!! What a night of fighting. It was on Pay-per-view. Some absolutely amazing fights!!!
You can probably check their website for full details. But the Tito Ortiz vs Forest Griffin fight was just incredible. Tito got the victory in a split decision that many people questions. And int he main event Tim Sylvia (the underdog) knocked out Andre Arlovsky in teh first round....WOW!!!!!!!
