Tuesday: 80 pushups, 160 crunches. Ended up going out in the evening, so I never managed to get to my goal of 100/200. 30 minutes on the elliptical including a few high-intensity intervals.

Wednesday: 100 pushups (5 sets), 240 crunches (4 sets). Went for an hour-long power-walk in the evening.

Saturday: 85 pushups (5 sets), 110 crunches (2 sets). Would have done more but I was in a crunch (ha!) for time. Also did 50 minutes on the elliptical, and a couple sets of weight-assisted dips and weight-assisted pullups.

Of course, I then went and blew through my calorie cap by drinking a couple beers. Oops. ;)

Friday: 100 pushups (5 sets), 200 crunches (4 sets). 45 minutes on the elliptical.

I was able to reach my short-term 100/200 goal. Of course, the past 3 days have been my weekend, so it's easier to spread the sets out over the course of the day. Now I'm heading into my workweek, so it will be a little more difficult since I do all my workouts in the evening Sat-Tues.

Anyway, I hope to continue to build toward the 500 crunch goal. And I hope to be able to do the pushups in fewer sets, or maybe I'll try to work towards 200 per day.

I got up at 500 this morning and was raring to go, I went to the gym and did my Chest routine, had a breakfast bar and did my Legs routine. I thought I should make up for yesterdays lazy day.

Crunches- 100
And it took all I had to get those. Ribs are still real sore, so I am not sure when I'll be in the pushup mode again, but I'll be working up when I do start them. My bike crash took more out of me than I thought it would. None of us are getting any younger, and I sure feel my age.

Mon: My day off.
Tues: 70 pushups (4 sets), but only 80 crunches (2 sets). Got distracted by other stuff, so I never got around to doing more sets of crunches. 45 minutes on the elliptical.
Wed: 90 pushups (5 sets) and 160 crunches (4 sets)
Also hit the elliptical for 45 minutes, and went for a 18-minute walk (approx. a mile) with the pup.

I should be able to hit the 100-pushup mark this week. I'm finding the crunches to be a bit more difficult, but I'm hoping to be at 200+ by the end of the week.

Anybody still around? ;)

A busy social calendar kept me from any workouts yesterday. But for my first week in the challenge, I didn't do too bad... 4 times this week, with a pushup high of 70 and a crunch high of 140. Hopefully I can improve on those numbers this week, beginning this evening at the gym.

I also hope to start adding a couple sets in the morning or mid-day (I typically do my workouts in the evening) to try to reach the 100/500 goal faster.

Thur: Day off of the 100/500 challenge, but I did 45 minutes on the elliptical, and a 25-minute walk with the pup.

Fri: 70 pushups (4 sets) and 130 crunches (4 sets), tho I might try to squeeze in another set before bedtime. 45 minutes on the elliptical, plus a couple sets of seated rows at the gym.

Just out of curiosity... does anybody know if it's any more or less effective to spread sets out over the course of the day? Say that I do 4 sets of 25 pushups every 4 hours (for a total of 100 during the day). Is that any better or worse than doing 4 sets of 25 all in the span of, say, 20 minutes?

Holy cow, Brian! Glad that you were wearing a helmet! Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery.

45 minutes on the elliptical. 60 pushups (4 sets) and 140 crunches (5 sets), plus 30 modified pushups as prescribed by my Spark exercise plan. Also part of the Spark plan: Modified plank (damn, that was tougher than I thought!), body weight squats and chair dips.

The gal and I also took the pup for a 25-minute walk this evening.

Hey Brian,

Sounds like you did go down hard. Take it easy, eat well and get some rest. How long did they say it might take to heal? I hope you feel better soon. Keep us updated.

Now you have me thinking, is there a good story, not really, riding , hit a rut and went down hard. I didn't go to the hospital until the next day, so I got the good news then. 2 cracked ribs, callapsed lung, bad bone bruise on the hip, helmet cracked in half. But today I'm am up not real fast but up.
I''l probable have start this challenge again when I get healthy.
Stay healthy and safe
Brian

Monday is my rest day. Today (Tuesday), I managed 60 pushups in 4 sets, and 130 crunches in 4 sets. Decent improvement from my 50/105 from Sunday night.

Also did 45 minutes on the stairmaster.

Brian!!! I hope you heal quickly, but if you've got some good road rash, you should take some pictures for us (I have to live vicariously through people right now). Is there a good story to go along with the crash? My favorite is adding a moose to every injury story . . . no matter how far fetched.

Take care,

Heather

I love the concept of this challenge. It remains to be seen whether I can actually put it into practice. ;)

Like others near the beginning of the thread, I love my cardio, but find it difficult to motivate myself to do strength training. I usually just do 3 sets of 12 reps of (insert random exercise here) and then call it good. But I think the 100/500 x5 challenge will be a good goal to work towards. I'll _definitely_ need to work up to it, but am not quite sure what my baseline will be. I'm thinking 50/100, and then shoot for 20% improvement each week until I can meet 100/500, but will check back in after my gym session this evening.

Thanks to Matt and Jeff for starting this thread way back when, and keeping it going for newbies like myself!

Edited to add... I managed 50 pushups (in 4 sets) and 105 crunches (in 5 sets), and then jumped on the elliptical for 45 minutes. Hopefully I'll have the same success in improving my numbers that many of the rest of you did.
