Personally I wouldn't take him to a Dental School, Find a pediatric Dentist to take him to. If you don't have insurance, some will work with you. This is a baby tooth and in about 2-3 years it will fall out, check to see if it is bothering him or is going to cause damage to his adult teeth, he may not have to have anything done with it at all.

Of course since they have already drilled it, and made the hole bigger, it will most likely have to be delt with. But find a pediatric dentist.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the replies.

The last time they worked on my son's teeth, they gave him something to drink to make him groggy and also gave him gas. They told me that he would fight them a while and then doze and then fight some more. They had to put him in one of those papoose board things to keep him still. The filling on his front tooth was so large that it popped off and now they want to put a cap on it.

I am not looking forward to taking him back to get that done. I took him to the Dental School to have it done and they don't completely put them to sleep there. It is too costly.

We had a similar situation, my daughter was not affected by Nitrous Oxide at all, and wouldn't even open her mouth for the dentist. They had to put her in the hospital as an outpatient under general anesthesia to do her three fillings. You could ask if your dentist offers that option, and if not maybe they could refer you to someone who does.

One of the teeth the dentist filled had to be pulled later due to an abcess, the bacteria had travelled into the pulp; she had to have a metal spacer put in, and the dang thing keeps falling out!! I have to take her back this week for the third time to have it put back in. *sigh* We're having our own mini-nightmare, lol.

Check to see if he was born without enamel on his teeth. That was the case with my daughter. Sometimes the problems are caused by nothing that you did at all.
Check with your pediatric dentist as to other options to the sedation that you already tried.
Best of luck - hope that you find out the reason and find a solution that works for both you and your son!!

Does he drink much other than water? Juice and milk can be bad on the teeth if there is frequent exposure.

Does your water supply have floride? Ours doesn't so the pediatritian put them on floride supplements.

Hi,

Have a 3 yr old that I took to the dentist. He had a cavity in one of his front top teeth. They filled it but the filling popped out. So now they said that they need to cap it. The problem is that he threw such a fit even after they sedated him. They told me that since he is so uncooperative (he screamed like they were torturing him today and all they did was look in his mouth with the little mirror) that they probably couldn't put on a tooth-colored cap because it takes longer and you have to be still. That means that they want to put on the silver kind because it is easier to do. I REALLY don't want a silver one because it is right in front. And I dread having to go through with him throwing a fit like he did last time. Why is he having so much trouble with his teeth? This is his 3rd cavity. Are some kids baby teeth just prone to be bad? I mean he is not a candy monster or anything and his older brother didn't have problems like this? HELP!!!

Thanks for letting me vent.

Terri
