What's up, Rocetop?
Oh, we're talking football! No doubt about that. We've just moved on to a different thread called football. Don't confuse it with the "proper" football thread. That's for those soccer watching people.

| REad all the posts and notice no post after June - IT IS FOOTBALL SEASON. LETS GET IT ON

Anyone up for a fantasy football league? I got an email from NFL.com for the free leagues. Say the word and I'll set it up

OK, The first game of the season is Sept 7. 83 days to kickoff! They could just run pick up games of flag football and I'd be happy right now.
Go Bolts!

Thanks, Russ. I just read Ben's statement. Seems that while the PA Dept of Transportation won't confirm it, Ben pretty much did, "never meant to break any laws".
Thank goodness he's ok.

Hey Nancy,
The reference to the License had come from the ESPN site in an article.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2482306
It said that Ben had a PA drivers license for cars but not a motorcycle license.
I'm happy he was released today and didn't need his jaws wired shut, again ESPN source. I can't imagine the amount of pain he went through since the most traumatic bike accident I ever had was going over the handlebars of my dirt bike after a little league game. I was maybe going about 30 mph and I wasn't wearing a helmet either. Asphalt hurts at 30.

Odd that I made that post yesterday, because on the way to work this morning I was listening to a Pittsburgh talk radio program that asserted that BB 'owed it to his team boosters' to protect himself better than that.
This incident made me think of other Steelers tragedies....does anyone remember the name of the recruit that had an incredible college career and then during training camp was paralyzed when he wrecked his sports car while driving drunk? It was a lonnnnng time ago, but maybe someone will remember.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any talk in the lounge here yet about Big Ben! Just didn't notice this NFL Draft thread.
My husband has a motorcycle and I love to ride with him. I can understand the temptation to go helmetless, especially on a beautiful warm day (there's no requirement here in CT either). But my paranoia keeps the helmet on my head.
And I agree with the sentiment that you should be required provide proof of enough insurance if you go w/o a helmet. I heard recently that the majority of riders in the US don't have personal health insurance, not sure if that's true though.
Ben's accident will hopefully serve as a good lesson to other riders. Pretty much the majority of his injuries could have been avoided if he had just been wearing a helmet.
I'm admittedly a big steelers fan, but honestly my first thoughts were concern for him in general, not about the team or the next season. He's an awesome guy. And as another motorcyclist, my heart immediately lept to my throat when I learned of the crash. Thank goodness he didn't suffer worse damage!
Russ - what's this about the license? I had heard rumors that his permit expired and he never got his license, but I've yet to see that confirmed. Do you have a source for that which you could point me to? (Just curious.)
- Nancy (sorry for the crazy long post!)

I don't hate him. He's a great player. Hell, he put up the numbers to put me over the top in my fantasy football pool two years ago ($$$). And yes, it's his coconut that bounced off of the concrete when he crashed, so it doesn't really affect my day to day life. And it is legal in Pennsylvania to ride without a helmet so he wasn't breaking that law, the license issue may be a different story.
What I don't like is the fact that by him riding without a helmet, he is giving other riders a bad idea. Big Ben can make his "choices". But then again, Big Ben can pay for his own medical bills. If the poor slob who works in the Target falls off of his bike, we're paying for his "right to choose". At least, if you're going to ride without a helmet, you should at least be required to provide proof of enough insurance to take care of yourself, if you set the bike down hard.
OK. I've gone into rant mode. Let me put my soapbox away again and switch to the decaf. :)

I keep going around and around with the whole helmet issue in my head.
Should people have the right to go helmet-free when it is their own life that a helmet protects? I don't ride, so I really don't have that point of reference, so I looked at it from the viewpoint of seatbelts. I seldomly wear mine and often justify not doing so with the thought that it is my own life I am risking ("Who is the government to tell me I have to protect my life? I'm not hurting anyone else.") I don't know if I believe that or if I really just don't want to be annoyed with the belt scratching at my neck.
That being said - can I really be upset that Ben didn't have a helmet, particularly if he wasn't breaking the law? It was his choice, and while we love (or hate) him, he's not accountable to us. Are we upset with him as a human for risking his life or as a player for risking next season?
I haven't decided.

| That's just too dangerous. The helmet should be mandatory. Even Suzuki says to wear a helmet with the bike. A license already is mandatory and he blew off that req too. This could easily have been career ending.

| In PA you have to have a couple years of riding experience before you can go helmet-free. The law went into effect while I was still living there and it seemed like overnight NOBODY wore them anymore.

| Charlie Batch was last year. The only reason I know that is he came up to Green Bay last year and beat us.
| He got a 9" gash in his head, broken jaw, broken nose, but he was talking coming out of surgery, according to ESPN. I think he's on the shelf at least half the season. All for the 'freedom' of riding without a helmet. Who's Pitsburgh's #2 guy?
| What is he doing on a motorcycle period. Maybe a big ol slow Harley but I heard he was on the fastest production motorcycle made. WHY????
WTF is Rothlesburger doing riding w/o a helmet?
grrr!
| Ok, McNair is officially a Raven. Baltimore just added a solid QB to a solid offense and an insane defense. Should be tough next year.
| I'm always up for some fantasy football. A sparkpeople league. That could work!

| One of my favorite sites is Pigskin Pick'em (http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/frontpage). For everyone who loves fantasy football .. let's make a team together at the start of the season. Who's in?

I'm sure He'll do fine. And Dante probably won't have a repeat of his Minnesota "Love Boat" incident so he won't have to worry about getting into that drama. Plus, he's got his big brother in Atlanta to counsel him on how to act in the NFL.
As for me, I love college sports. I live and die with my Aztecs. Mostly die but being an Aztec fan is kind of like being a Cubs fan. You're there in fat and lean years. I'm just waiting to see what SDSU pulls together this year. We produce offensive players and they keep flirting with being a good team, only to come up 6-6 or 5-7. Why? Historically bad defenses. We get into high scoring shootouts that we can't always keep up in. Hopefully Coach Long has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Go Aztecs

Thanks - I guess I'm biased, not because of the rivalry between the Mountaineers and the Hokies, but because Michael was a phenomenal player at VT. A few even dared to suggest that Marcus was a better QB, one article I read somewhere speculated he'd be picked up by the third round. (Still laughing at that.)
I suspect you're right. Nothing like a few years of holding that clipboard to humble him. Maybe then he'll grow up, stop picking up teenage girls and pulling guns on teenage boys, and start to play. But we'll see. He's a great athlete, but he needs a strong defense (like tech's last season) to back him up because (just like when he's off the field) he seems to cave under pressure, as we saw in Miami.
Am I the only college fan here?
Amywvu,
Hop right on in. We're all ready for football to start. I think, Marcus Vick will be a clipboard holder next year or two and hopefully learning from Dante Culpepper. If he can glean a little bit from Dante, he'll do great. But, it'll be a couple years

**butts into the conversation**
Sort of related . . .
Just curious as to what everyone predicts in Marcus Vick's future? Will we see more of the same behavior or could he possibly top the abilities of Michael?
Sorry, but I just have to:
*Newsflash: 2006 Gator Bowl champions, the Virginia Tech Hokies, have recruited a record 14 kickers for the 2006 season. Quoting an unamed head coach "We wanted a team that could really kick a man when he's down."

Steve McNair gone to Ravens. What will come of this.

You know you're right. I was going to say its usually June 1st when you see the dumping. I wonder if they extended a date since the CBA was done later.
Be interesting to keep an eye on this.
| Has anyone noticed that there wasn't a big dumping of free agents this year? I had heard the salary cap was bigger but this is insane.
| McNair's going to Baltimore, pending his physical. Looks like they're clearing room for their franchise player.
| Well I am ready - Tennesse Titans and The University of Tennessee - GO VOLS
| The Packers with their new coach are on their third mini camp so there has been plenty of news up here. Cant ever get enough football!!
| How long to pre season? I can't wait.
| I like AJ Hawk - wish Titans would have picked him up.
| I know I am getting excited to see AJ Hawk on the field in a Packers uniform. The NFC north is looking to have a couple good linbackers in Hawk and Urlacher. Kind of like the days of Nitchke and Butkus!
| Now Leinart is going to start in Arizona. No other real options.
Just like I said - We will see. You are right. Fisher is good coach. He will not put Young out there his rookie season. Limit action if he even plays at all.
He will be another Steve McNair for sure
