good idea to be at your goal now then later. did you know you can continue to excercise when your pregnet by walking. Also try not to gain more then 20 lbs during your pregnancy. I gained 60 not a good idea took 2 years to loose it only because I stayed on top of it.

I tried weight watchers its not for me! I don't think they track exercise correctly! Too much with counting points and stuff! I like the preplanned menus those have always worked for me in the past! This way my menu plans are always made for me and I can substitute with what I feel like eating that day and still stay within calories and on track! Plus the support system at home or work with SP is great!

Do you go to weight watchers? I hear that is a very good program we have it hear in my job we have a spokesperson that teaches it hear.
I’ve never attended a session…. but I know a lot about diet pills… and how they work and don’t work. We want quick fix; remember we didn’t gain weight over night. We need to loose weight the same way we gained it 1lb a week. …so much for loosing weight…

I'm 28 and ohhh how my body has changed! After 25 things really went down hill but I was in good shape up until 2003! 2004 was all over the place but I got into shape in 2005 for my wedding but only maintained that up until about late May or early June of 2005 and then my weight has just been climbing ever since! I know what you are saying nobody ever guessed my weight when I weighed 157 people thought I weighed 135-140. I think I will be very comfortable at 145! Also at a weight 155 and over my sciatic nerve really suffers at time I feel immobile! I can't keep these 25 lbs! I hope I lost some weight this last week! I'm sure I did! The moment of truth will be revealed tomorrow morning! Wish me luck!

5'7 is pretty tall I'm not sure how old you are but your body does change as you get older and Don't go according to the BMI it's normally base on an aveage of those who wiegh 150. I weigh 135 and I don't even look it I look like I weigh 120, 125 and even though I want to loose 10lbs my close still fit me from 5 years ago...so I don't know what my problem is...I think my body is changing my curves.

Totally understand! I'm just on the cusp of being overweight I think but not yet overweight! My husband says I can't go according to the BMI cuz I have muscle so its not accurate! I'm 5'7" and weighed in at 168 last monday! That is too high! I'm at the highest weight that I should be for my height though! Want to lose 25 lbs to be perfect at 145...which usually brings me to a size 4 or 6! Can't wait!!!!!

I’m not over weight either I’m 43yrs old 5’2 and weigh 135lbs I want to weight or my goal is 125lbs but I seem to struggle with just 10lbs. I can do 5 pounds easy and once I loos the five I gain it back maybe because I’m a bread lover and French fries those are my weakness. I also try not to buy it but my hubby needs his bread and French fries.

I'm not sure if that made sense not over weight but want to loose weight???

I hear you! Good old muscle weighs more than fat! My B.M.I always reads incorrectly because I do have a large % of muscle mass. I'm not over weight but I'm not comfortable at my size! If I didn't have muscle I'd probably be at my goal weight but still be unhappy because I was flabby or didn't have muscle tone! Its hard when you are fit and gain weight....especially when you are trying to determine what is a good weight for you! I was laughing to my husband saying a lot of people's start weight is my goal weight!!!!!

They say your suppose to weigh yourself once a week at the same time every week however when you exercise the scale doesn’t count because you’ll show weight gain and sometime it could be muscles. Not that you gained weight. I’ve been excercing for years also and the hardest part is maintaining the weight you want to weigh

For me exercise is the easy part because I've been doing it for years! I thinking having a set goal of how many calories you need to burn daily is great! When I'm crunched for time I just increase the intensity so I can burn calories faster! Now I know how many calories I have to burn! I'm not so great with portion control, I'm not going to beat myself up though as long as I can say I am eating less as the days go on! I'm weighing on Wednesday and by then I'm sure I'll have my period so I'm not optimistic to see a loss due to water weight?? Any thoughts....I don't want to put the weigh in off! I haven't weighed consistently in years! I hate the scale but now I think it is the only tool to truly keep me on track! HELP!

Everyone seems to be a good job on portion control which is a great thing. Please don’t forget to included exercise also… they both work great together. Weather it’s 30minute walk or 30 minute bike riding it’s very important to stay moving.

Thanks! I really have to work on that! Eating slow and less! Last night I went to my cousins for dinner and I know I ate more than I should! The food was so good! All healthy options though, except maybe the rice and peas(has hydrogenated coconut milk) but the rest was salad and meat...I ate more than I should of in the meat department and with the rice! She had wonderful stir fry shrimp...that I felt like I couldn't get enough of! I drank water and stayed away from dessert! That isn't hard for me! I really have to concentrate on eating slower and not going back for seconds! I too have been pretty much measuring most things, and making sure I burn the required amount of calories at the gym! If that is the case I will move on to stage 2 at my one week mark which will be wednesday! Thanks!

Hello Danielle, I just wanted to let you know to not beat yourself up. :) I just joined stage 2 of spark, and apparently in stage one since you are just begining, you are tracking your food to just get an idea of where you are and what your eating/excercising habits are. In stage 2 is where they tell you to use the calorie counter daily and to get the exercise and to measure your food portions. I didn't know that and I was doing all of that from day one!

Secondly, drinking water and eating slower will have a large impact! I slow down my eating and TRY to make it last 20 minutes (how long they say it takes for your body to know if you are full or not) and what a shocker! Its amazing to think now how much I over ate in the past!

Good luck!

Hi all! I'm not sure if I've spoken with any of you but I started on Wednesday and am from Toronto Canada!
I really like Spark people so far! Portion control is my biggest problem, I eat fairly well, but way too much! I could get away with this until I turned 25! I'm not 28 and almost 30 lbs heavier than I was when I was 25! My goal is to lose 25 lbs! Friday was my 3rd day with spark people and I lost it on portion sizes when it came to dinner! I found myself bored at work so although not that hungry grabbed some popcoren which I planned as my snack for after dinner(hadn't even gotten home yet)When I got home I made dinner and then dished myself more than I should have and on top of that ate in front of the tv and went back for more!
I have been discussing SP with my husband and on Saturday he asked "Do they focus on portion sizes, last night it looked like you ate a lot" Like noone noticed! Here I am thinking he wouldn't notice where it was quite clear! Only day 3...what was I doing! Saturday I got back on track! I burned 420 calories at the gym instead of 220 calories(my target! Yesterday I said to my husband I need to eat at the dining room table, or I won't focus on what I'm eating and I was fully able to control how much I ate and the speed at which I ate it! I find I have the tendency to shovel down food in front of the TV! Thanks for the advice SP!!!!!

I used to do the same thing. I do not even buy ice cream any more, my husband found out he is diaetic. He is a very slim man so it was a surprose to us. I now buy sugar-free popsicles they are already portion controlled and only 40 calories each. My husband loves them too.

My best advice so far is to take small bits and really taste every bite. By doing this I acually feel like I am eating more and I fill up quicker on less food. The taste is acually in my mouth longer, since I am chewing it up more and really thinking about how it taste. You would be surprised the foods you eat that you really dont even like as much when you really taste it. This is a great one if you are craving choclate. I put just one hersheys kiss in my mouth and just let it melt and really enjoy second of it. I am usually cured of my choclate craving after this. Just think of how many you could have had in the time it took to melt one in you mouth. You would not even be satisfied with all those extra calories.

my biggest portion contol issue before was ice cream. I would FILL my bowl up everynight - a gallon pail would last the two of us less than a week.

Now I buy the edy's light ice cream (just for myself - my hubby still eats the other ice cream) and I only have 1 scoop. I add a little fruit to it like grilled pineapple - frozen berries (nuked a little to make warm) - or banana. I am totally satisfied with my little treat.

I have a tough time with portion control as well. I also hate leaving anything on my plate, whether at home or going out to eat. I start trying to control by portions last week (before I found this site!) and I find that a smaller amount of food will satisfy me. I did buy a small scale to weigh things out. I find I'm less likely to go back for more if I know I have to weigh or measure the food out.

tell me about it's much more cheaper to eat fast food then to eat small portions it's very expensive to eat good food

Prepackaged meals are often the easiest way to go for controlling portions, but how much more expensive are they then making meals yourself?

I have a really rough time with portion control. One portion just doesn't ever seem like enough! I'm going to try some of the strategies you all suggested, wish me luck! :)

I too use a smaller plate - though I opt for paper plates. Once we're done, the kids know to go dump them right in the trash, then I'm not tempted to pick at leftovers!

Keep up the good work all!

Have you tried doing the same with sugar. It works the same way as salt... try sugar. Good luck

Hi Everyone.
I made my 1200 calorie goal today and I am starting the week off right. I have a weigh in at work on Wednesday. I feel so much happier when I am not bulked out and dragging from too much food. Even though I feel a little hungry still, I have more energy and my clothes (bra) fit looser. Yeah!! Thank you so much for posting and telling of your experiences. It really helps me. It's raining in Portland

I know what you mean. I couldn't believe how small 2 ounces of steak is. Thank God I have a shipping scale to weigh those small amounts.

Smaller plate helps me.. I use a 9 in plate for dinner and 7 in for breakfast..no heaping portions!!!

I have trouble imagining eating "only" a portion size - especially of meat. As I just started, I'm trying to keep my calories in the recommended range. It took a day or two, but for a couple days now I've been in my range (actually still below today). I'm hoping that focusing on calories will eventually keep the portion sizes smaller. Thanks for the posts.

Hey! After reading everyone's replies it occurred to me that we have to consider that our stomachs can be stretched and shrink as well. (is this the topic of a whole 'nother thread ?)

I know I have been in periods of time when my physical stomach was used to being stretched to capacity. I think it just happens gradually. And it is an uncomfortable process to "shrink" it back to its natural, healthy size.

SO - even if you don't have faith yet in yourself to control the desire, trust that your body will eventually do the adjusting for you!

The same thing happened with me and popcorn. I used to pop a bag and eat the whole thing myself. Then I bought the 100 calorie bags by Pop Secret and it's just as satisfying as a whole bag. Actually more so because I don't feel so guilty after eating it!

Another good thing is to change plates. For dinner use your salad plate. It's amazing how much food it looks like if you're using a smaller plate. I think the last time I used a dinner plate is when I had company.
