I was heading for a pre 30yr old heart attack.
Cholestorol of 9.7, heavy smoker, was just all bad.

January 2nd 2006, I quit smoking... I discovered I had heaps more energy... so I started walking.. then I got serious and started dieting... riding 6 days a week.

I've now lost 11kgs (24lbs???) since Febuary.

I decided I needed to lose weight because I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stomach problems, sleep apnea and the topper was I started to have symptoms of diabetes. I've decided its time to change. I'm going to the doctor in a couple of weeks and I don't want to hear him say I am headed for diabetes.

The big thing for me was hearing that my father had lost so much weight that I came close to weighing more than he did ( he went from 295 -204 last I heard) so I figured it was about time to put some more distance between us. I was also losing sight of my feet

A few things --

* My pants were starting to get tight...AGAIN.
* I wanted to start competing again -- in something and have always enjoyed running. However, I knew I was too heavy to really start training very hard. So I used an elliptical religiously for a month to lose a few pounds before starting my training.
* Wanted to look better and feel better.

I need knee replacement surgery and I'm too heavy to get it. Constant pain is one heck of a motivator.

I say a picture of myself and I could not believe how fat my face looked. So I decided that it was time for a change...

I left high school at 160, college at 180, and then my wife had a baby, and i went to 215, then another baby and 225...good thing I got on the "V-bus"...no more kids, no more gain. I've done this for two reasons, the first to support my wife, and the second as a challenge. Oh, and forty is creeping up on me. Good luck to everyone.

Hmmm thats a hard question... so many contributors... but the one that stood out over the rest was...

Being able to see my Butt from the front!!!

Haha... but alot to do with just being fit and healthy like the Army days...I want to be able to run and chase my kids around before they are grown and wanting less to do with their "old man" that will be a truly rough obstacle... but we're not there yet!! All the best guys!!

Congratulations on quitting smoking. I smoked for twenty years and quit cold-turkey with a couple of relapses. Smoke free now for 6 years. I also gained the weight but wasn't concerned with my diet or exercising at the time. You are one step ahead by being a part of SP during this process. You can do it and I will keep you in my prayers.

It's been a long journey but it started when I realized I was "fat and unhealthy". I weighed 240 and thought I was having a heart attack. Turns out it was stress. Started walking, joined WW w/ wife and dropped 50 pounds to 190. Started jogging and am now addicted (ran my first marathon this Feb) but my weight crept back up to 210. I saw a picture of me during the marathon and the gut I have disgusted me! I want to get rid of that gut and vastly improve my endurance run times. I want to like seeing what I see when I see pictures of myself i.e. no gut!

I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure at 36yo and I know what I have to do in order to live longer. Louisiana is not helping me any with all this good food but what a way to control my will power than in a place where everyone loves to eat.

I'm quite new to Spark and just getting acquainted.

I smoked for 40+ years but have now been Quit for 18 Months. Best thing I could have done for my health!! I used the patch, zyban and quitnet.com. Its been a lifesaver for me.

Now I need to get rid of some of this weight. I was heavy before I Quit smoking, but gained another 20 lbs. in the process. This looks like a great support site and I'm hoping to use this and some of the committment & determination I learned to help me loose weight.

Amen Brother! You should try it at 50. I've lost 17 pounds in the past month but it is slowing down a little now. I do 30 minutes every day on the Air Walker and religiously follow the calorie guidelines. I'd like it to be faster but I guess I'm on track so far.

When I left high school, I was 165. Leaving college, I was 190, and in great shape as a 4-year varsity rower. I coached for two years, and managed to stay in good shape. I couldn't afford to eat a lot, and had lots of time to work out - plus I was surrounded by fit people, and my boss was a fitness nut. I moved home for 5 months though, and put on 40 lbs. When I went to put on my favorite jeans, I couldn't button them. Not just tight, but no way no how was the button going to even approach the buttonhole.

I'd like to get healthy again. I think it's going to be easier at 25 to lose the weight than at 45.

hey everyone. I am new and the reason i decided to lose weight when my clothes started to not fit me and started to get winded just walking up a few flights of stairs.

My gf is also a member of University of Pittsburgh's Twirl team and she has to maintain a weight limit. I went on a diet to help with her. I am doing a good job with it so far.

It took 9 months. I followed the SP guidelines very strictly for every day of those 9 months. I didn't use their recommended menus, but I followed the exercise, calories, carbs, protein, and fat religiously. When I started SP my goal was to lose 65 lbs in one year. I ended up losing 85+ lbs in 9 months.

"when I was called fatso when swimming" and

My doctor told me I'm definitely carrying too much weigh... gotta make a lifestyle change to take the weight off and KEEP IT OFF. Plus, ever since high school, I've always been overweight. I don't know what it's like to be slim or slender as an adult, and I'd like to see that. Also, I'm getting married next June and I'd like to be a little slimmer for my bride-to-be.

My reason this time is to live longer. I lost about 60 lbs before and I looked GOOD!!! But due to a job moving (the new place has a LARGE cafeteria) I gained alot of it back. So now I'm back to losing it again!!!

Waterdog, I tell you THAT story sounds familar. I moved from a rather non-hilly area of the country to Northern Minnesota where EVERYTHING is hills. Within 6 months of the constant up and down stairs and up and down hills I have some sort of protuberance on my heel that is very annoying. The 17 or so pounds that I have lost has eased the ache there some. Looking forward to reading many more of your day to day adventures! Keep us posted.

I remember when I first went to size 40 jeans and had a meltdown and refused to try them on. Now I am in 46 and they were starting to get tight! I went walking about 2 months ago and my weight caused me to get a heel spur. That plus huffing anf puffing when I played with my grandkids was an awful feeling. So now I'm down 15 pounds and still going. I still have to make myself exercise but the calorie counting and meal planning has been pretty easy so far.

Plain and simple, I just want to look good. I want to be able to walk into a room with confidence that I have never had before. My girlfriend is naturally small so she eats anything and does not have to worry about weight. She has never said anything but i'm sure she would love to see me lose the weight too. Heath would also be another issue. Getting tired of being heavy and ignoring the aches and pains that come along with it just got old.
