| Thank you for all of your advice! The dress came in a couple weeks ago, and the dress store owner said I would not have my first fitting until 6 weeks before the wedding (so mid-June). I am hoping to lose 10 more by then (hopefully 4 months will give me time). Also I was freaking out because the store owner noticed I had lost weight and said I should not lose any more! It is corset style, and the top already needs to be taken in so the dress stays up. Gulp! Luckily her seamstress was there, and I showed her the dress and she told me she would be able to take the dress in. Keeping my fingers crossed that it won't hurt the dress!

| I agree- it does depend upon the style of the dress and the skill of your seamstress, but most dresses can be taken in quite a bit without compromising the integrity of the design. It just might cost a bit more, as it is more work for the seamstress. My dress also has a lace overlay and is going to be sized down quite a bit- the woman who is altering it for me said it wouldn't be a problem for her, just that the cost might vary depending on where she would need to take it in from (i.e. the sides or the back). Good luck!

| I agree with the lastposter... you should find your seemstress and ask her what she will be able to do. Beading can be altered, however if there is a specific decoration made by the beading it can set it off. Also make sure the dress can be altered from the sides if it has a lot of beading etc. If it is a straight panel with seams just at the back it makes it hard to have the beading look right ... since it will start to wrap around your body. Having said that ... do not be discouraged a good seamstress can work wonders. Keep your weight goals and be happy with who you are on your special day.

I had the same situation back in September when I got married. I ordered my dress in Sept. of 2005 and went to get it altered in June of 2006. I had lost 20 pounds at that point.
My seamstress said that I couldn't lose any more weight because while she could take it in, it might look funny. She said that it depends on how much beading and decoration is on the top of the dress (I had a lot and it was also a corset dress.)
I would recommend finding the seamstress that you want to use and asking him/her what they think.
Congrats to you!

| I am going to have to have at least part of my dress taken in several sizes due to my odd proportions. I hope it is possible!

| I used to work at a bridal shop and our semstress was awesome. She took a discontinued dress that was a size 18 and altered it to a size 4. She was awesome! I think it depends on the semstress and what they are comfortable doing. But I know it can be done! Hope it helps.

| I think the most it can be taken in is about 3 inches... not sure how many dress sizes that is, but I think that's what it is.

mine was on corset back (the top) and it could go down 2 sizes. the skirt also had some "trick" that could make it smaller. and i needed to use that b/c i was down a lot between the moment of purchase and the moment i wore it.
talk to the bridal shop where they alter it. 2 sizes is not that much and it can be taken in.

| Most bridal stores will tell you that you can lose 20 pounds (about 2 sizes) and the dress can still be taken in. I wouldn't not lose the weight because of the dress - as the previous poster said, it might cost you more for alterations, but in my mind it would be totally worth it. Ask the seamstress about your dress specifically because of the beading and lace - but she should be able to take it in.

| Thanks for the responses...I do have a lot of beadwork and a lace overlay. Do you think that will make a difference?

| Definitely. It's going to cost you more, and if you have alot of beadwork or embroidery on the gown, it's going to be more difficult for the seamstress, but, it's much easier to make a gown smaller than it is to make it larger. Good luck and keep up the great work!!

| so it is far easier to take in a dress than to take it out. so, as far as altering because you are losing weight, you can totally find a great seamstress that can take it in for you-and you DONT have to use the dress shop that you bought it from! good luck on that last 10 pounds....i have a lot more to lose and i hope i can do it before my fitting! j

I ordered my dress back in October at the size I was. I have since lost about 10 pounds. My goal weight is 10 pounds more to go. The dress shop owner said I should try not to lose any more weight. My wedding is in August. I received my dress 3 days ago, and it already will need to be taken in slightly. My question is...how much can a dress be taken in without ruining the dress itself? Can it be taken in 2 sizes smaller? Does anyone have experience with dresses being taken in a lot?
