Mini reception before the big reception?

I talked to my mom today who told me that she thinks there is no way to have the reception at the church since it is so small, and it doesn't look very nice, it looks grundgy. She also thinks that the church (ceremony section) is also very small, as do I but we have to have it there or it would upset to many of my fiance's family members. Myself, I'd like everything to be at my parent's house, ceremony, reception... everything.

Thanks for the advice, I actually looked the directions up on mapquest to the church, then from the church to the reception, and it's really easy to get to the freeway from the reception. I am horriable at directions so I followed mapquest's to the letter and I got to the church with no problems.

I went to a wedding last year in Louisville, KY. We stayed downtown and the ceremony was at this church in the woods. It was about an hour drive to the church, we got lost. Called the groom, who said the ceremony will be postponed for a 1/2 hour because so many people were lost. After we finally arrived, we got lost on the way to the reception, which was back in the city (an hour away)! It was very nice and I had a great time, but make sure you give good directions. If you can, drive it multiple times and look for landmarks!

Thanks, that helps. I didn't really like the idea of it either. But, my mom has been worried all along that if we have the reception at her house people won't come because it is too far away, and the house won't look good enough... I'm just going to tell her that the reception is at the house and I'm not planning a mini reception on top of the regular reception and the ceremony.

I agreee with the other posters. I would rather go to the reception than the ceramony. You might find that you gain people.

Hey Natalie - I wouldnt worry about that...most people enjoy the party aspect of weddings.

It almost seems like too much. I sure that if you give good directions people won't have a problem getting there! Plus people go to weddings for the food and drink!

Hey, I want to have the reception at my parent's house which is about a half hour drive from the church. So, we will loose probably half the people from the ceremony. Does anyone have any ideas about having a mini reception at the church with just cake and punch before the big reception at the house?
