More muscle burns more calories, so I wouldn't be concerned about avoiding your pecs. Working your pecs with a butterfly machine (or the same motion with freeweights) will actually radically decrease those little rolls under the front of your armpits (which is one of my strapless dress goals).

Also, to tone rather than build bulk you need to do high reps, not low. A good number for toning without bulking would be something like 3 sets of 8-12 reps (more for core muscles).

I'm lucky, I've got good bone and muscle structure for a strapless to begin with.

I'm using the strength training equipment at the gym - for back, biceps, triceps, deltoids, abs... but I'm actually trying to avoid the ones that beef up the pectorals, personally.

I'm trying to lose the overlying layer of fat, but the pec area is where my dress can cut in and make little rolls over the top, ick! I figure adding more muscle there wouldn't really help, but losing the fat is the most important for me.

I'm doing all the arm/back exercises at the gym - for lats, traps, deltoids, biceps and tricpes..I'll let you know if it works out. I've never really concentrated on my arms. I never really liked my arms (let's face it, arms usually are the first to go a little flabby) and figured it would be too much work to get them in shape. Also, I'm afraid of bulking up, so I'll have to keep the reps low. Anyway, here's for a try at it...

The push ups and curls are working for me. I have only being doing it for a month and I have already lose one inch in each arm. And to be honest I have not really being doing them that often.

The BOdy sculpting Bible for Brides is awesome. I did the upper body moves and I can tell it really affects the areas that need to be affected (flabby arms).

Good luck everyone!

Ashley & Susanna:
I'm in the same boat - losing 20 pounds by my 10/14 wedding date. Can I get in on the buddy thing, too? :)

i asked almost this same question on the exercise board. i have 9 months to tone up back and arms. i am hoping thats enough time to see a difference.
my 'trainer' told me lat pulldowns would be good.

Susanna,

I don't have a fitness buddy, but that's great that we're on the same day! How do we go about being "buddies"? I am all for it!

Hi AshleyUVA...
Do you have a diet buddy by any chance? We have the same wedding day and want to lose the same amount of weight! (I'm also going to have a strapless gown!) Have you used the Exercise Selector on Spark (it's on the Fitness Resources page)? There are some fantastic demos, which I find really useful for working my arm flab. :) Let me know if you want a SparkBuddy!

Do some tricep overhead extensions too to get rid of flabby underarms. ;)

Definitely pushups and chest press...I would also do back extensions and shoulder exercises (such as lateral raises)

I don't know myself, but I ordered two bridal workout books. Once I get them, if they have any suggestions, I'll post.

I know pushups and biceps curls are probably the way to go, but does anyone have anything else that has really helped them?

I suppose back exercises should be counted into this too. Any ideas there?

THanks!
