I find that if I stay away from soft drinks & carboated drinks, my hot flashes are minimal. I don't drink coffee and I gave up diet coke 3 yrs ago and since then, my main drink is bottled spring water but once in a while I want a soft drink so I'll have diet Sierra Mist or Diet Dr Pepper but can only drink a small amount or I find my self having the hot flashes. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Oh boy - welcome to my club. I don't have hot flashes.......I'm just hot all the time. I've said that I wish I could have hot "flashes" - flash implies a beginning and an end - there isn't any end for mine. My face and neck are flushed all the time. I do have a mild case of rosacea as well which doesn't help. Anything hot will make me flush as well as the cold, the heat, the wind, the sun, exercise, stress ...... need I continue? I think you all get the picture - just about anything! Nice to hear I'm not the only one like that tho.

Ahh! Keeping me awake and alive is what I have chocolate (and my motorcycle) for.

Hi, fellow biker babe! Good to hear from you! Hope to hear you're in the wind on your own bike soon. Thank goodness you at least have your hubby's bike to ride on! I definitely have to avoid the caffeine--it causes me anxiety like you wouldn't believe!

Hi MTNKID1952! Back in the day, I used to have a 400cc Honda, silver, twin exhaust. Now my hubby and I have a Yamaha Royal Star Midnight Venture, a BIG bike and I can't hold it up, much less drive it.

I would like to have my own bike, but hubby lost his job last year because the company he worked for moved the business overseas and let everyone go. He is starting out in a new profession, so we are not making as much money right now. But who knows, I may be riding again some day. In the meanwhile, I enjoy riding with him.

Well, I too have found that caffeine will cause me to be flushed and I am cutting back and drinking lots more water. That seems to be helping. Also a hot bath will get me quite flushed.

Oh, if chocolate is a cause I'm doomed to flash and sweat forever! But what a way to go! LOL

That's a great way to get started. I'm 53, almost 54, and I've been riding off and on for about 23 years. I started out with a little 125cc engine motorcycle and am now riding a big 1300cc cruiser. Women are now 1 out of 10 bikers and growing every day. I belong to two ladies motorcycle groups--the majority of whom are menopausal and post-menopausal ages. My favorite thing is when I take off my jacket and people around me are stunned to see it's a woman riding that bike. Then I take off my helmet and they see my salt-pepper hair! I entered a bike show three years ago and I couldn't believe the number of older women who came up to me and said they had always dreamed of riding their own bike but didn't think it was possible. Send me pics when you get your Vespa!

I found Menopausal Body Spray by Reviva Labs at The Vitamin Cottage helps. I feel a hot flash coming on and I spray some on my chest and it stops it pretty good. Smells nice too.
MSG, chocolate and caffeine cause me to have night sweats. I never realized it until a co-worker who is 71 yrs. old told me that's what caused her night sweats to get worse. She was right! So when I wake up all hot and sweaty, I think "What did I eat today that would cause this---oh yes, it was that canned soup with MSG, or that Chinese Food, or that chocolate candy bar..." Anyway, I can always point it to a food or drink! I'm glad she told me that.
Everyone has such good ideas on what to do or try. I will check out the One a Day vitamin for menopausal women.
Keep up the good work everyone!

Maybe I should get a motorcycle. I am over the hump now...what a better way to live. No worries every month. FREEDOM. But I did ride with the A/C on in the winter.

Whew...women have a tough time..but I would rather be one than the alternative.

I take Black Cohosh and soy in any form. I've heard you should also dress in layers so you can cool off during a hot flash and redress when it's over. I get real cold when my hot flash is over. I was riding my motorcycle one day when I got a hot flash and I thought, "Dang, this is the perfect sport for menopause!" LOL

The following aromatherapy formulas may be helpful:

For hot flushes - clary sage 5 drops, geranium 5 drops, sage 2 drops, lemon 2 drops, blended in 25mls evening primrose oil.

For day & night sweats - cypress 5 drops, sage 2 drops, grapefruit 5 drops, blended in 25mls apricot kernel oil.

Have also found that increasing water intake to 2 to 3 litres per day helps.

I took Black Cohosh to. The first time was due to menapause and the second time due to taking synthroid. I am a breast cancer survivor so hormone replacement is not an option for me. I got the capsules and just took the recommended dozage on the bottle. I had a hard time swallowing the capsules, especially with the thyroiditis, so I took them apart and made a tea out of it. Another thing that works for me is a cold compress around my neck or wrist.

I also use black cohosh, along with red clover and special vitamins for menopause. My husband orders them for me on the internet. It is also very helpful to add as much soy to your diet as possible. Sometimes I take my vitamins with chocolate flavored soy milk. I add small amounts of tofu to my cooking. I have the night sweats pretty much under control now, but still have the occasional hot flash.

How much Black cohash? I've heard of it but haven't tried it. I did try HRT for a couple of months. Symptoms were relieved, but then I got scared and stopped the pills. I haven't had any trouble since stopping them several months ago. I've noticed that exercise reduces symptoms as well.

I use black cohosh. It has helped a lot.

I also am just plain flushed a lot. Not necessarily the typical hot flashes, but I am rarely cold. My hands and feet and face are always hot....my cheeks are always red. Anyone got a lead on that?

I think I will look into the yoga thing. Anything on SP about yoga?

My doctor had recommended 40 mg of soy (easily taken in pill form). Within weeks I was rid of the hot flashes and night sweats and even started losing weight. Before starting a soy supplement program, please check with your physician. I was fortunate enough to have a doctor who does not believe in HRT and the soy worked great. Good luck!

For me, there seems to be a correlation between my stress levels and the number of hot flashes I experience. I find that doing yoga regularly has helped significantly! I also think that doing aerobic exercise daily helps a lot and eating soy products might help a bit more. I am trying it all and it seems to be working. I also don't take any hormones and don't want to start!
I credit the yoga as being the most helpful.
Good-luck to you!

HELLO ALL. I USED TO WORK IN A HOSPITAL AND WE HAD A CASE WHERE A MAN WAS ADMITTED BECAUSE HE REGULAR USED BABY POWDER ON HIS SHEETS. JUST BE CAREFUL IF YOU DO AS YOU WILL BE BREATHING IN THE POWDER FOR 8 HOURS!

I USED TO HAVE THE HOT SWEATS AND OTHER SYMPTOMS UNTIL I BEGAN USING TAHITIAN NONI JUICE. WITHIN A MONTH ALL MY SYMPTOMS WERE GONE AND IT HAS BEEN THREE YEARS NOW! I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER BRANDS OUT THERE BUT THE ONLY ONE THAT WORKED FOR ME WAS THE TAHITIAN NONI BRAND. I BUY MINE FROM A FRIEND.

I JUST JOINED SPARKPEOPLE AND HOPE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WEBSITE. I LIKE THAT THERE IS A MESSAGE BOARD AND HOPE TO HAVE TIME TO FREQUENT IT OFTEN!

I TYPICALLY DO AN atkins DIET, WHICH WORKS FOR ME, HOWEVER, I MISS FRUIT. SO I AM GOING TO TRY COUNTING CALORIES. I REALLY LIKE THE RICHARD SIMMON'S WALLET SYSTEM WHERE YOU HAVE ALL THE PORTIONS YOU ARE GOING TO EAT ON LITTLE CARDS. AS YOU EAT THE PORTIONS YOU PLACE THE CARD FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE WALLET TO THE RIGHT SIDE. I DON'T HAVE THAT WALLET ANY LONGER SO I AM THINKING OF MAKING MY OWN CARDS ONCE I FIGURE OUT WHAT I CAN EAT ON THE CALORIE COUNTING SYSTEM.

I'VE STARTED MILLING MY OWN GRAINS IN MY VITA-MIX. I'VE NEVER BEEN A BAKER SO IT IS ALL NEW FOR ME. I'M FINDING IT HARD TO LOCATE recipes THAT DON'T ORIGINATE FROM A CAN OR PROCESSED FOOD... ANY HELP OUT THERE ON WHERE TO GO TO GET THE "HEALTHY: FROM SCRATCH" RECIPES?

SPEAKING OF FOOD IT IS TIME TO MAKE HUBBY SOME DINNER. I'LL CHECK BACK LATER.

Diane,
Hi. It doesn't stop the flashes, but baby powder on the sheets does help soak up the sweat!

Lavender scented even helps you relax a bit....

I was hoping someone would have some suggestions.
You are right - it IS reality. I hope you find some relief.

I wasn't sure where to put this topic but I sure could use some advice. Has anyone come up with ways to combat this insidious condition. This is my second round of them. I was having them about 2 years ago and then they stopped for a really long time. Just recently started again.

I won't go on hormones because of risk factors and possible weight gain. Any over the counter products working for you out there?

Not a fun topic but a reality!!!!
Diane
