well that was just scary and believe me i will certainly take note of what you have said and take care of myself. since i have been taking the prilosec i have ben doing good but sometimes my stomach just burns even with the prilosec, i took a zantac the prescribed kind not over the counter and they were great, but i have traised the head of my bed by about 4 nches, not smoking as much, welllll....i do but i dont take the smoke into my lungs, its mostly the psychological part of it now for me. the hand to mouth and social smoker. no smoke goes into my lungs. and yes im a silntrefluxer too

I was being tested because of having trouble swallowing when the doctor discovered that I had reflux. Prilosec does the job very well. On days when I forget to take the prilosec, I have serious trouble swallowing.

I know I am kind of late in this discussion. I have silent reflux. I don't feel the heartburn, but the acid does come up and spills over into my trachea. It has caused my trachea to nearly swell closed. So, I have a tracheostomy so I can breathe. This heartburn is nothing to mess around with. It has caused me all kinds of problems. Swelling in the back of the throat causing obstructive sleep apnea, the sleep apnea causing me to go into respiratory failure. Now I can't get rid of the trache tube until the sleep apnea is taken care of and the silent reflux is gone. The dr. told me to loose weight and believe me this tube in my throat is plenty of motivation.
Ok enough whining from me. I just wanted to warn you that heartburn is nothing you can mess around with. If you get it more than once a week you need more than rolaids or tums.

HI, Ive had acid reflux and hiatal hernia also. Since I've been on Nexium it is a very infrequent. I also did a few other things like:
Raised the head of my bed on six inch blocks. Never drink coffee or other drinks with caffeine Limit my intake of alcohol. No exercise right after eating. No eating before bedtime (wait 3-4 hours after eating before lying down) Avoid foods that are known to cause heartburn. Limit colas. No smoking ( I never did but if one does)
These things can make a difference. One of the best things to do when you get heartburn or reflex is drink water. This washes the acid out of your esophagus and can prevent damage. Unfortunately, if the esophagus is burned repeatedly by acid, you can get Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition.

Acid Reflux or gastro esophegal reflux disease(GERD)is a common thing among we overweight individuals and it affects at least an estimated 5% to 7% of the global population – men, women, and children. (Prevalence based on once per day heartburn.) Heartburn and/or acid regurgitation experienced weekly has been found to occur in 19.8% of individuals.[1] Some people have GERD without heartburn. Instead, they experience pain in the chest, hoarseness in the morning, or trouble swallowing. You may feel like you have food stuck in your throat or like you are choking or your throat is tight. GERD can also cause a dry cough and bad breath. Here is a great website to read up on GERD and the things you can do to prevent further damage to your body from its symptoms.
great news the prilosec seems to be working, i have 7 more days of it. i have not been cheating though i have not drank any coffee for about a week, no wine, maybe a wee bit of chocolate haha and last nite i had chicken burritos with sauteed onions and red orange and green bell peppers yum and not problem oh and it was a wee bit spicy. hopefully it willnot flair up again. but i will be good. now i battle a sinus infection. good luck on yours. belinda

Yea...great list! Unfortunately my doctor didn't give me a list of foods, except a few things. Mostly he just gave me a pill, which of course doesn't work if I go overboard on the forbidden list.

That's a great list! I know that for myself, when I'm eating properly then I really don't have any problems - its only when I'm not keeping to my diet that I really suffer. It should help me to keep to it, but unfortunately, I don't always know how to say no to the things that I should do. Anyway, have a good Sunday! Jackie

i understand where you are coming from however its not just overweight people who suffer from acid reflux, its the kind of food we eat! i worked in a dorm at a college and most of the young fit girls there suffered from acid reflux, either to much pop, or to much pizza, or tacos, so i dont think its an overweight thing, but it certainly doesnt help it much. to much fried food, to much acidy things, to much chocolate, to much to much to much of everything.
FRAN3ORD 4/26/07 7:59 P
I have my own little acid reflux no-no's like tortilla chips and coffee.
RAZAYOTAIR 4/26/07 5:19 P
It seems to me that it must be a sort of punishment for being overweight - whatever we all like seems to cause it! Whether its good things like brocolli for some, or the bad stuff like chocolate for others!! (To be read in a sort of sarcastic tone!!!!)
SANDYMAE3 4/25/07 11:03 P
jackie, i agree we should identify the foods that cause the prob, i have stopped drinking my two cups of coffee in the am and i have not eaten Tomatoes in week. no more oj and i think blue berrys are high in acid too, which i have been eating. i need to get a list of the foods that are high in acid i think pineapple is too. plus im sure spices and garlic and onions. all the thing si love.
SANDYMAE3 4/25/07 10:59 P
i am convinced that this acid im having is the foods ive been eating, and the crazy thing is, it's all the good stuff i'm suppose to be eating, know what? its darned if you do and darned if you don't i think, that use to be one of my favorite sayings, and still is.
im still waiting for the results of my barium swallow test, i guess no news is good news right?
hummmmm its just a waiting game i guess. but in the mean time i'm keeping the acid down by taking prilosec for 14 day therapy. and today i had some kool whip on a piece of dump cake and in about 10 mins the stuff was coming up, very weird, ice cream does it to me to. i have noticed that my gold rings have started turning my fngers black, which means i have a lot of acid in my system. anyone ever heard of that? i think the acid thing is getting better because the rings are not turning my fingers black today. and they are real gold.

Hi, I'm new here and just now working my way to the message boards. I've had acid reflux for several years now, and what really gets me is that I can't have some of the foods, mainly vegetables that are good for me and I also like, like broccoli (sp?). It's really hard for me not to go overboard on this stuff and of course some of the foods that aren't so good for me, like tortilla chips . I guess that I'm the learn the hard way type. But. live and learn!

I too have noticed over the past couple of months I have had more difficulty swallowing. I have been battling acid reflux for some time now. I take Nexium, and it took a couple weeks for this even to help. I am confused about the foods that trigger this because tea sometimes bothers me and at other times, I can drink 2 glasses and nothing happens. Same with caffinated colas. I do not feel my esophogus is swollen as it is not a constant problem with the swallowing. I thought maybe it was because I was getting older, or it might be a reaction from taking other medications. Just don't know yet. Sorry you all are having this problem. If anyone gets a diagnosis, let me know too! CindyW

Hi, I've had that too. I went to my doctor after suffering for a long time with it. She sent me for a test - can't remember the name of it - they stick a tube down your throat, but give you valium to relax you before - it sent me to sleep and thankfully, I can't remember the test at all!!! Anyway, I was put on something called "Omepradex" plus I was give a dose of antibiotics because my situation was getting bad and it had caused an infection. Since then, I've not suffered so much. However, I can't eat too much in the evenings otherwise I really suffer. And there are certain foods which I have to stay away from - especially pastries. Chocolate can cause me problems - let's face it, chocolate isn't good for us anyway, but I have a problem keeping away from it!!! I have not felt that my exphogus was swollen though. Although, come to think of it, there are times when I find it had to swallow. The right thing to do is to identify those food items that cause the reflux and keep away from them! Don't know if this has been any help to you, but at least you know that you're not alone! Jackie

i have started having acid reflux lately and i'm telling you i think it has swollen my exphogus, because it was hard to even get water down. went to the doc, she is a quack!
seems when i drink my coffee in the morning with creamer it gets really bad, but if i drink it black and make it weak im ok. this just started now for about three weeks. any ideas why? maybe one of you had the same issues as me.
