I tried yoga & it about killed me. My back really hurt when I did it. I guess there was to much twisting & stretching. I can do Mountain Pose with no problem.

My bones have degenerated also. After many weeks in bed & on different meds, my doc finally sent me to a physical therapist. I completed my sessions (6 weeks, I think) and after 11 months still do not have the dibilitating pain I used to have. Exercising sometimes causes me problems and when that happens I take time off from exercising. I did water aerobics among other things. I noticed some of the exercises there hurt my back so I just didn't do them. I walk the treadmill & the streets when I can. I also lift weights which the doctor told me not to do. Lifting weights doesn't seem to bother me. I take supplements but not on a regular basis. I really don't exercise on a regular basis either. My bad!!!! I have been a a 6 week vacation from this site but now I'm back & hope to start doing everything on a regular basis again.
I went to a neurosurgeon for my final evaluation.
I have lots of spurs & bulging disks etc. the same as you. Good Luck

Thanks. I've already started therapy, and the first session felt really good.

I echo the others in getting a 2nd opinion. I also recomend walking and yoga. I have found both being very beneficial. water aerobics is great when the pain comes and enables a person to keep moving with less stress on the joints.

Thank you sooo much. I really appreciate your advice. This is just the beginning so I'm going to definitely talk to more than one doctor and do the research. AND I'm definitely going to keep moving

Hi there.Do not under any circumstances take just one Doctors word for it(your condition, etc.)!!!!!!I can't stress this enuf'.You need at least 3 opinions from different sources(specialists that don't work in the same netwrok,i.e. hospital, medical clinic) before even conbsidering any surgery. Also go online to WEBMD and do your research. A good local commuinity hospital that is also a teaching hospital i a very good source fore Specialists that are up on the very latest. And I also can't stress enuf' the benefits of water exercise,a lot of communities now have some sort of arthritis or low-impact aerobic type of water exercise offered for a low price at local pools. If not a good therapy department at local hospital should have water therapy offered and your Doctor can order that.I am totally disabled and the only exercise I can get is water, since I ccan't walk due to amputation. It keeps me in shape just moving around in the water, not actaully swimming, try it but start slow as you don't realize how much you're doing in the water and you can pull a muscle or strain your spine.Good Luck and just keep moving.

Thanks so much for your wise words. I intend to keep on as I am doing. I know that to move as much as possible is important. I enjoy walking too. I'm impressed at your weight loss. Apparently, you know what you're talking about. I will definitely be looking into some of the alternative therapies you mentioned. Again, thanks.

Long ago a wise Native American medicine man told me that anything out of balance could be put back in balance. Our bodies want to be healthy and are always striving towards that end.
Losing excess weight is a wonderful action to take. Good for you. It is an affirming action that says you want to be healthier.
Personally I have found that all that doctors say is not neccessarily the only reality nor the only options. I have found amazing results with naturopaths, accupressurists, massage therapists and herbalists.
Changing my diet improved my life immensely and I wish you improved health. Please don't give up on good health.
Walking is my favorite daily exercise. Getting at least 5 servings of fresh fruit and vegetables is also on my to do list. Becoming a vegetarian was the best decision I ever made towards better health.

I just found out that I have advanced degenerative bones--lots of calcium deposits, bone spur that is touching my spine, deterioration of bones. I have minimal pain, but my dr. is recommending therapy and a surgical opinion. He says my condition is somewhat advanced for someone my age (63); it's probably genetic. He says to continue to walk and stretch and that the physical therapy will provide me with more exercises to do at home. My son recommend SMS which supposedly helps build cartilage. I've started back on this. Fortunately, I've not experienced a lot of pain and generally feel pretty good, but I have some mild discomfort with my limbs going to sleep and the resultant tingling. Is there anyone out there going through this? If so, how do you manage your exercise; do you take any healthful supplements?
