Hey Dave,
Wives are funny that way, we just like to have our men around and healthy. Well most of us do anyway LOL. Better be careful if you have one that doesn't.
Have a good day

Hi Diane,

Ultimately I am losing weight for more than myself. For some strange reason my wife would like me to live longer so, I'm giving it a try.

Seriously though, since I joined this site, I am paying closer attention to what I eat and how much.I too have had some medical problems directly related to my weight (gall bladder removed, foot and back problems). Honestly, I'm tired of feeling old and slow.

Thanks for your encouragement. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Dave,
I agree that you really sound like you know what your problems are and you aren't fooling yourself. I have been on the roller coaster to. The only advice I can offer you is just keep the ultimate goal right in the front of your mind. How you do that is something that you will have to find for yourself. If you constantly remember what you want to accomplish you can get there. I want a candy bar really bad some days. I stand in the checkout aisle. I look at the milky way bars. Then I have a conversation with myself about the dress in the closet, the jeans, the fact that sometime before I die I would like someone to whistle at me. Whatever it is that I need to accomplish that day is what I bargin with. Once in a while the candy bar wins, usually it doesn't. I will tell you that if my husband would loose 50 lbs it would mean the world to me. I want him to be healthier. He is diabetic, has back trouble and losing weight would make things so much better. I don't even dare to hope he would quit smoking. What I am getting at is it is possible you would make your wife the happiest woman in the world. I know you have to do this for yourself, but making your wife happy is always a good bonus to. Just some thoughts, as you can see I have a few here and there lol. Keep us posted on how you do

Rebcca,

WOW, thanks. I'll take a shot at the list. My wants are short and simple so it shouldn't be to hard.

I'll see how it goes.

Thanks again.

Welcome to SparkPeople Dave,

Your last paragraph seems like a self referential negation....having heard it all and not finding any advice useful et al. So you have the self awareness to know where you are now,

anyway....Here is a plan:
The Plan

Write down on a sheet of paper or journal, in order of importance all the things and/or circumstances you really want. Always write in the present tense, as if it is happening now. Do not be afraid of wanting too much. Go to the limit in writing down what you want. Change the list daily, adding to it or subtracting until you get it right. Do not be discouraged on the account of changes,as this is natural. There will always be changes and additions with accomplishments and increasing desires.

3 Positive Rules
1) Read the list of what you want 3 times each day--morning/noon/evening

2)Think of them as often as possible

3) Do not speak to anyone about your plan except to the Great Power within you which will unfold your objective mind into the method of accomplishment

Ok, here goes. I've been on a weight roller coaster for 20 years. I'll be 54 this spring and would like to live longer and better. My wife and I just retired, sold our house and are moving to a 55+ community next month. We have an RV we plan to use extensively for as long as we can.

My eating problem: BOREDOM!!! Too much time in front of the TV in the evening. I want to lose 90 pounds by my birthday in 2008. I have little or no discipline when I'm bored or upset. My profile says I am an emotional eater. I've been smoking on and off for 30 years. Retired from the Air Force in '91 but I started struggling with my weight the last couple years before I got out.

I have dieted several times but always put the weight back on.

I am tired of being fat and having my activity curtailed because I am tired or sore or both. I want to quit smoking as well but I'm afraid I may be trying to make too many changes too fast.

Any one out there like me? What do you do when you lose your grip?

Please help. I've never been one to make a lot of friends but, when I do, it's for life.

I've heard all the cliche's, all the hype and rah-rah stuff and it doesn't help. Once and for all, I want to learn to control myself, eat right and still enjoy life.

Dave
