The memory does improve but mine isn't like it use to be but neither is anything else, lol

I am looking forward to my memory coming back. Its awful forgetting where I put things. I find myself putting the rubbish in the fridge and milk under the sink. This evening I went to put the clean tea towels in the freezer until I remembered the draw. It sounds funny but if I didn't know it was menopause I would be really concerned.

I have not had a period for five months now but actually began with hot flashes a year ago in Dec. They were nearly unbearable at first, especially at night when they woke me up. I was, however 176lbs at that time, not exercising, not drinking water. Since last March I have lost 47 lbs and the symptoms are much less severe. Exercise elevates my mood and increases my confidence. I still have some down or sad times but have learned that they will pass quickly and not to take myself too seriously during these times. My GYN physician is a female but in her 30's and not an advocate of replacement therapy. As several have said everyone is different. I think for me the onset of perimenopause/menopause has been a blessing because I got serious about my health and my choices.

To me the peri-menopause was the worse. All the boo-hoo's nerves, memory loss, 2 stays in the hospital for heavy bleeding. Menopause was a God-sent! The hot flashes aren't bad, what can I say about the memory? lol

Judy you really made me laugh this morning. I wanted to kill my ex-husband too, but that was through pmt. They put me on loads of B6,B12 etc etc. I am glad to say he is alive, but we got divorced it was a lot safer for him that way.

I too am having hot flushes during the night. Its awful because it is actually very cold right now and I don't need an electric blanket. Hope I get through this quickly.

Premenopause kicked my butt for about 3-5 years. I finally stopped having a period 2 years ago in January. I am 55 and so glad to be through it. I have some major hot flashes though. I can't take soy because I am on coumadin(blood thinner) and they advise not to take it. I also don't take Hormones because my Mom had uterine cancer(she is a survivor) and has had several lumps removed from her breasts all benign so I am scared to take them. I do take a antidepressant for the mood swings and that helps alot. My husband is still alive!!! LOL!! I really wanted to kill him a few years ago. hahahaha... I am fortunate not to have night sweats but I about die when a hot flash hits. Want to strip but you can't do that out in public so I have learned to keep my clothes on.....

Menopause... as if we don't have enough with the child bearing/rearing.

Really, I am in the same boat. I've taken the time to research Menopause, because as I am sure we will all experience and conclude, this is NOT our Mother's Menopause and/or experience. I too believe we all manifest different reactions to this phase in our lives. One website that I really love, and found to be very informative is: http://www.womentowomen.com

We are fortunate to be living at a time when there are so many resources at our fingertips. There are a number of great books as well.

My suggestion, after you've read and enlightened yourself develop a plan based upon your body, environment, schedule, etc to clearly ascertain what your own expectations are. For me, i.e. I realized that I am in my 5th decade, and what worked me for me in my 2nd and/or 3th decade will not work now.

Some of the things I've incorporated into my schedule is getting at least 30 mins a day of cardio. This helps to cut down on the hot flashes, and a great side effect, I sleep much better. Additionaly, I've incorporated soy into my diet, and added Black Cohash (a supplement) to my daily regime.

Hope this helps as you join the sistas in our right of passage!

Hello,
I am also new to the site and suffer from hot flashes. I have always been scared to take medication, because they say it leads to breast cancer, so I endure the hot flashes. I work and sometimes I get a little frazzled, but I will go for a quick breath of fresh air and come back to what I was doing and it seems to help sometime. You should talk to your doctor and as for functioning mentally it all depends on the person. Think positive!

You are so right TXGRAM. I came off Menopace as I felt that they were making things worse rather than better. I do have my mood swings but not as much as I used to. Last week was the most awful week but I got through it without taking any pills. I think that its the unpredictability that causes the problem and then the not being able to go out in case of accidents. I feel a bit hemmed in by it all but as I say I got through it and this coming week will certainly be an improvement on the last. I might measure my waiste line tomorrow or Tuesday because I know there should be some difference now its all over until the next time.

I am menopausal. I had a hysterectomy(kept ovaries) when I was 32(I am 56) so I have no help with that but I started the hot flashes about a year ago along with mood swings. Yep, you are right, fun! When I saw my gyn several months ago she wanted to put me on premarin. I decided to try losing weight and see what happened. So here I am 5 months later, 30 lbs lighter and have to tell you that my hot flashes have slowed way down and the mood swings are almost gone. There is something to this losing weight and getting in better shape. I feel so much better than I did before. So hang in there, follow your progam, what ever it is and it will happen!
Good luck to you all!

Hi Susan. Drinking water should help you as water retention can also be a menopausal problem. The more water you drink the more you pass.

Hope this helps.

Hi Marie Roberts

Thanks for your encouraging words. I only stopped my period in Oct but before that was hit and miss.
I can't say that I have experienced any problems so far, except that I am finding it a lot harder to lose weight. When I was younger it seemed to me
that the pounds melted off when I was dieting but I am really having to work for it now.

I keep a journal and sort of use the weight watches
point system as I find it easier then couting calories. I get to weigh myslef on We so I shall see how I do.

Have a good diet week.

Susan

Hi Peper01. I will be 52 in a couple of weeks and have been premenopause for about 18 months. We are all different so our experiences will not be the same. For me I suffer a lot from hot flushes during the summer, my periods come and go as they please and my hormones are on a chaotic spree and I am an emotional eater. Its really great.

The most important thing is that whatever you do stay with Spark because there are so many people to offer you support and friendship.

I joined last June and have lost 13 pounds. This is a miracle because I achieved this despite the above and this is an achievement for me. I still have a long way to go. Spark has made the journey so much more endurable because of the advice they offer and the many many friends I have made.

Good luck with your weight loss journey.

Thanks Dreamweaver:

That is what I needed to hear. I believe the weight will come off when I am finished. I will keep watching my food intake and exercising until then.

When I started going thru menopause , I did the same thing. My cycle lasted for 3 weeks then a big release of water when it finally quit. As far as severity, I think everyone is different.

Hi

I have finally entered into the Pre menopause stage and not sure what to expect, I use to be able to lose weight easily but having a difficult time as I also an seeing water retention. I am 53 years old and have no children so I am not sure if I am going to have a easier time or harder time.
I guess I will just have to wait.

Any advice.

Susan

Hello:

I have another concern. I have been with Spark for six months and have lost 35 pounds. I am going through menopause. For the last six months my menses has been off and on. However, whenever it came on I would gain about five pounds and then would lose that about 3 days after. This month, I gained the 5 pounds, but when I thought the menses was over, it continued off and on. I have not lost the 5 pounds, in fact, I have been fluctuating and holding on to it as well as 3 or 4 more pounds. I want to know if this is water weight and if it it normal. Also, can I look to lose this fluctuating weight when the menses is over. Has anyone else had this experience?

Thanks for the encouraging words! Yes, the night sweats are frequent, about once a month just before my cycle starts.

You'l' function just fine. Wearing lighter fabric clothes and layering helps with the hot flashes. I have more problems with night sweats

Hello,
I am new to the site and I am loving all the resources. My question is not particularly diet related but menopause. I had my first "hot flash" during the day on 1/9/07! I am worried that I will not function mentally as well. Am I off base with that fear?
Thanks
Vicky
