I don't really have a system yet. I've been with the program 2 months and I'm still experimenting. Most evenings I get on and do my tracking and post messages (my niece quit weight watchers on line and joined sparkpeople so we chat and encourage each other)If I'm expecting a bad day at work, I try to get on in the morning and track what I plan to eat. That works well if I got to bed early the night before.Otherwise, I don't roll out of bed early enough to do much before work

Hi, NewRose,

How did that work for you? I do my sparkwork over my first cuppa in the morning -- filling in the final entries for the day before and entering breakfast and lunch for the current day (I take my lunch to work, so that isn't too hard). Then I check in again after work, make any adjustments and enter dinner and the water I've had during the day.

What system is working for you?

How do you cope with craziness at work and still stay so active on Sparkpeople? I find myself tracking and posting til long after I should be in bed. Today I decided to do my tracking before work.. I have my whole day planned out. We'll see how it goes.

My first couple of weeks on SP I just monitored what I was already doing -- and learned a lot! Then I took on the challenge of fitting in 8 glasses of water a day. Now that is not too hard any more.

One think that has helped is I got some smaller plates and bowls. A smaller, full plate makes me feel like I'm getting a lot, whereas a large plate with the same amout of food looks meager. Even though I'm aware of how I'm "fooling" myself, it still helps!

Hang in there. You'll get plenty of tips on the boards, and soon will be cheering on yourself and others!

you just got to keep plugging along-it will never be easy like when we were younger, but just got to figure it's worth it to be able to enjoy everything in life we worked hard for!!!
bless you,
Bonnie

Thanks for the encouragement. I just got home from the gym hot and sweaty and too tired to get out of the car for a second.I guess I keep waiting for that runners high you hear about to kick in but it never does
I do feel good for having done my workout.

Hi Rose I started on Sparks one month ago today. To be completely honest I wouldnt so much as walk to the mailbox if I didnt have to. Since then thru the support of my new friends here I began a walking program. Every morning I went out for a walk, the first week or so I was lucky if I lasted 15 min, today I walked 1.8 miles and was a little tired but not exhausted. My advice is just to go as slow as you need to and gradually your staying power will increase. The only time I felt like I was slipping up was when I tried to push too hard and when I failed I got those old "I cant do this" blues. My friends wouldnt let me give up tho. I slowed down a little and sure enough I started to improve again. I know I have a long road ahead of me since I still have 60 lbs to lose but I am feeling better each day about myself and maybe that is the key to success. Good luck on your program and feel free to email me if you ever want to chat. MJ

And you'll find helpful tools on this site. Try printing & following some of the exercise plans. I am starting with one of the Beginner levels of the walking plans: A Heart Healthy Program. Talk about being a slug -- I've always joked that I'm a professional fan (I watch almost every sport & participte in none)! It isn't funny anymore now that I'm up to over 180 pounds.

hey, take it from the former slug, it really does get easier. I started very slowly and have worked up my stamina. It's never gonna be like it "was", but for an "old" lady, I'm not doing too bad!!!
Keep it up, baby steps,
Bonnie

What a difference 25 years makes! I've been on the spark people site for a month and a half now. It's been great. I've struggled with my weight my whole adult life and this is the first time I really do feel like I can control the whole nutrition thing. The trackers make it so easy to see where you veer off course!
I'm on a spark team with some friends and family who all want to get a grip on nutrition and it's great having their support, but they're quite a bit younger than me and I feel as though I'm in a whole different ball game. The old metabolism really slows down after 50 and I feel as though I need to work twice as hard to get results but I only have half the energy that I used to.
Does this exercise thing ever get any easier?

Good morning ladies,
It really is a "one day at a time" thing, even for me now and I've been here 5 months. I have had some great success, but also a step backwards once in a while, plus fighting health problems that make it tough to lose weight.
But I also firmly believe that staying with it "one day at a time" and continuing to monitor food, exercise, etc. is going to get me where I want to be and I'm not in a rush to get there this time. I am slowly learning that this isn't "dieting"--there's no end to this. I am going to change my life and especially my relationship with food. Even after 5 months, it is by no means perfect. But I am a work in progress, I know a lot more than i did 5 months ago, and i do have part of the equation down-I regularly get my water, and i have been exercising like a madwoman-this from a former slug!!! So the hardest part is food, but I am determined to keep working at it, too. Just had a Dr's appt this week and my blood pressure is NORMAL-for the first time in 8 years. I got to cut one med in half and we'll see how it goes.
this and the fact that I feel so much better are fantastic motivators!!!

Didn't mean to ramble on so, but I feel like SparkPeople is the greatest gift I have been given in a very long time-and I found it by "accident"

Blessings to you on your journey,
Bonnie

Thanks so much, both to Rose & Darla. I already "know" the things people say when they encourage me -- but it really helps to hear it from someone! I did better the next day, but yesterday was tough again. Thanks for your support!

Hi Vicki, and Rose,
I am not 50 yet (October)but we are at the age that is seems impossible to come off. Menopause has caused a lot of my problems that I have right now. I just need to take time and work out a good program. I cook for our family and it is hard to eat different from them so I eat less than they do. I eat off of salad plates it really helps. To your eyes it looks like you have a full plate, but it is less than a dinner plate. We all can do this if we can keep our selves motivated. Darla

Hi Vicki,

It takes some time to gain control of food. It really is a lot of work. Some days I just can not get the fat, proteins and carbs to play nice together.

You can do this and imagine how good you will feel!!!

I signed on to SP 7/31/06 but didn't actually get down to work until 8/14/06. So this was my third day & I really went off the scale with my calories & fat (carbs & protein look okay). I'm hoping some of you fellow-fifties can motivate me to stay on track. I've never really dieted in my life but I've got to get this weight off. I don't want to fail at this!
