Posture is one of the biggist things for me. We all need to start thinking about the way we sit and stand.

Unsure, or anyone else that knows, what did you mean when you said that crunches can weaken the blatter?

Browing around spark people and read your posts. I have been working at a women's workout center for 3 years and it will come as no surprise to you that tummy fat is a huge (sorry) challenge. I agree with the gal who posted that cardio to burn away fat is what it takes. All the ab work in the world doesn't seem to remove the pouch. There is no doubt in my mind that I have a great six pack behind that excess out front. Now if your ab work is raising your heartrate and burning fat that could be a winning combination. I have always been an apple shape and have finally accepted that I probably always be to some extent.

Someone else mentioned posture. This is definitely a factor in how our tummies appear.

I, too, have a belly pouch and I've been told by my gym instructors that you can only get rid of fat by burning it off!! So for me it's down to 30 mins cardio and resistance training 4 times a week. My understanding is that the cardio will help burn off fat and toning the muscles up also helps the body use more energy and tighter muscles can take up some of the slack!! Also (and more's the pity) you can't "spot reduce" fat - it just goes from where it fancies!

The scariest thing I did was asking a friend to take some photos of me in my undies when I first started attending the gym (Jan 06), as a motivator. I loaded these onto my laptop and when I didn't feel like going to the gym, I took a peep at them - I was out of that front door before the machine logged off!! I've just had some more taken and am really surprised at the difference. I've still got the rolls, but looking much less now and my belly-button has moved up about an inch!!

So... I think that generally the fat's coming off, but from all over. Perhaps I've got a some "body dysmorphia" and can't see the difference when I look in a mirror. However, I am now wearing clothes that have been waiting a long time to get out of the wardrobe - so somethings happening. I've accepted that it's going to take longer than I first hoped. I just want my body to be fit & healthy and at its peak.

Good luck to everyone.

I know It workes. When I had to learn to walk again I drank milk and eat only three meals and day and did exercise to strengh my leg and lower body and lost 43 pounds, but change in meds put my weight back on. Now I have to do it again. It got harder for I am not doing as much work to tone muscle and I deal with pain every day because of plates in legs to replace the bones I lost in accident. But am starting to lose in the stomach and butt area. I don't do crunch for they can weaken the blatter and can lead to incontine problems. sorry about spelling.I work on toning hamstring and lower back muscle and carring my body correctly. It help to tone muscle streching also helps our body to stay limber.

If there is any truth at all to this 3x dairy per day - I should have zero belly fat........ or any fat and boy that sure isnt the case.
I drink FF milk at least 3x per day and before I was calorie conscious I probably drank close to a gallon of milk every day for most of my life ( I'm 53).
Middle age, menopause etc........ didnt seem to care about the dairy I consumed....... I have 20 exctra pounds on my frame and most of it is fat - and alot of that is in the mid section.

So much for the theory !

I have also heard that about the water. I was never a water drinker until I started SP. Now I'm not seen without it.

I have also heard the take your body weight divide it in half and that is the number of ounces you should be drinking of water per day.

For some reason that is the number of ounces that i consume per day naturally---a little more if it is really warm.

I need to work on the dairy, since belly fat is a concern of mine and the one spot that altho better still needs a lot of improvement. ( I have lost 7 inches from my belly, but if it is still a problem, you can just imagine how bad it was!!!!!!!--the permanently 9 months pregnant look!)

I'll chime in here on 3 dairy daily. There is something in the makeup of milk products that actually helps the body lose weight.
Quote from 3aday.org Q: How/why do dairy foods help you lose more weight and burn more fat?
A: The mix of nutrients found in dairy foods, especially calcium, may be responsible for helping the body break down and burn fat. Studies have reported that dairy foods exert a significantly greater effect on body weight and fat loss than calcium supplements. While more research is needed to fully understand the dairy and weight loss connection, the unique nutrient package in dairy may be a key contributor to dairy's superior effect. In particular, the distinctive proteins in dairy may explain the greater weight and fat loss when dairy is included in a reduced-calorie diet.
Another nutrient is WATER. To stay properly hydrated you need 1oz of water for every pound of body weight. For me that's 184 oz (or 23 glasses water or 7 24oz sport bottles) - talk about floating away.....

Good morning all.

Pilgrim1, try stretching. Sitting in a chair, try to put your hands on the back and stretch, change sides. Another good one is arms overhead, grab wrist and stretch to the side several times, then change sides. I sit at a desk all day and have found that these 2 stretches really help to keep my midsection limber.

Have a safe day.

Besides tummy fat, I have BACK fat too! totally disgusting, no waist. I don't think I ever had a waist! I'm working on ab exercises. At 59 almost 60, i don't expect to be a model but I don't want a fat apron forever either. The good news. i did lose some Inches in the abdomin so the strength exercises do something. I do water sit- ups and the exercises where you do curls on a chair. i do a couple of things for obliques. But I think my obliques are shot. I can hardly bend side ways. Any ideas?

When the over 50's find the answer to tummy fat I want to know the solution. Since Menopaue I have had more fat there then I ever did. I do firm 5 day abs every day and still it seems like it won't move. Good topic for all of us. That is my most unfavorite body part. Great ideas to try ladies. Thanks

I have a wonderful Pilates workout that I really enjoy and the bonus is that it is filmed in my favorite place on Earth--Hawaii! If you haven't already heard of it, it's called Pilates Conditioning for Weight Loss by Gaiam. Suzanne Deason is the instructor. The workout is shown at 3 skill levels--you can watch just your level individually or all 3 at once (which I prefer because I am advanced on most moves but intermediate on a few). It is a 45-minute workout but I usually find that it goes pretty quickly.

Pilates on the whole focuses on the core (abs/back) strength and this particular Pilates workout works out almost every part of the body--even the toes!

Afternoon everyone,

I did Pilates when I got home last night. Sure didn't want to but did anyway. I do it 3-4 times a week and concentrate on the midsection.

Have a nice evening.

I am really interested in this conversation. I also have heard about the dairy products. I do Pilates three times a week plus upper and lower body workouts. I try to do the treadmill and bike six times a week. I'm hoping all this works.

You are right in everything you posted...and I also try to stand tall and hold it in. The walkinga way the pounds vidoes are good for that. And it does help to strengthen those abs. And the female fat zones. I do eat yogurt and usually milk in the morning, and often cottage cheese, just don't think I actually do 3 a day. need to do better with that. Thanks for all of your good advice

I find myself thinking more often to suck in those abs and tummy. I think this helps with strengthing as well. As soon as I do that I automatically stand taller. I really find the leg lifts help, I think I in variious forms are a big part of palaties. They use "hundreds" counting and pumping your arms while you are doing the leg lifts. Takes your mind off the pain!!!!

I heard that dairy is importand in loosing weight. I think it keeps you feeling full. I love plain yogurt with fresh fruit salad in the morning. The calcium you get from daily is so important as well. So many women have problems with bone loss after 50 that it is important to get your calcuim and I find this is an enjoyable ways to get it. You are doing great, keep up the good work. Sometimes I feel It is a loosing battle. Men seem to have an easier time in loosing it around their middles, but this is not middle this is lower than middle. Men do not have tummies like we do!

I wish you much luck and keep at it as every bit helps. Tummy fat is the last to loose. Women store it there incase of famine then they have reserve fat to live off of. Evolution has not caught up with the times. We have no problems finding food. It is everywhere we look. We do not have to wait days until the men come home from those long expidetions with the mammoth.

I've also had a heart attack, two of them actually, but they were not caused due a heart problem..but a rare, deadly tumor on an adrenal gland. The first time I was hospitalized they kept me sedated and out of it for 7 days so I quit smoking. Then the second time, Iw as in the hospital for 28 days with nothing to do but eat. I wasn't allowed out of bed..so I ate. Am losing it now finally..Good luck to you, stay determinded and I know we'll make it to our goals.

Hi, I'm 61yrs old and I too want to lose my tummy. Really don't mind the weigh I've put on ,my only problem is the tummy area. As a young girl I always had a problem with gaining weigh.I've been skinny all my life never being over 100lbs. When I was pregant I would only gain between 10 to 15lbs. But since my heart attack and stop smoking I put on 40lbs. But being 5ft2" the weigh has slow me up.Find walking and working around the house is getting harder to get done. So, I bought some excise things and I'll begin to work out. So, wish me luck and hope all you nice ladies reach your goals...

OK..i'm a little younger, 49, but I have 6 children, so I definately have the tummy fat.

There has been a big campaine lately regarding MILK.

3 dairy items a day in your diet is supposed to help burn tummy fat. so go for yogurt, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, ice cream... they all work.

I did this a year ago for a few months, and definately lost inches in my abs...

I started Curves one month ago today, I work out hard 4 - 5 times a week there, and am staying close to my cal range, between 1400 - 1600 most days, and I lost 7 inches in the last month, and 2 inches were in my abdomen!!!!!

It will work for you too ladies!!!!
