I thought I'd post as I'm feeling so pleased with myself! I've been training for about 3 years now, and upgraded to a flash ergometer about 1 year ago that measures aerobic parameters. I'd read a lot about age related decreases in maximal oxygen consumption and that the decline could be stopped/slowed with exercise, as can osteoporosis with regular exercise and good diet and Ca/Vit D supplementation. Today I had proof that despite thinking I had hit the ceiling with my VO2 stuck at 2.9 l/min with inevitable decline, it has climbed over the last 2 months as I've pushed the cardio as well as weight training to 3.15 l/min. So, it can be done, and the byproducts of a much shapelier me are astounding and what is also fascinating is how my nails have changed colour from being somewhat yellowish to clear and more youthful!
To all of you out there working hard...keep going, it does change things for the better. I feel I have more energy than when I was a slobby tean!
