TOPEACE: fabulous idea!! That would save the burden of creating a whole new category. Sure, we users would still have some work to do, but it works.
And on a side note, on the new recipe site, there is a chicken alfredo in the veg/fish section.

I've got to agree. I'm a vegetarian as well, and I tried looking up vegetarian recipes and it was just WAY too much of a pain. Can I suggest that instead of moving the recipes to a different section that SparkPeople just add a "V" or some kind of little icon in front of dishes that are vegetarian, no matter what section they are listed in? So anything vegetarian, whether it's in the appetizer section or the fish and vegetarian section would be clearly marked. Many restaurants do this, which saves me having to read the description of every item on the menu to find something that is veggie-friendly.
I think a lot of people are getting ticked about this categorization because they're tired of people assuming that vegetarians eat seafood. Putting these two things together just reminds us all of the frustration when yet another waiter says something like "Yes, we have vegetarian dishes - we have a lovely salmon dish today."
I too, almost didn't keep using SparkPeople because of this fish/vegetarian problem, and because it was such a pain to find the recipes I could eat.
Please, SparkPeople, just give us a little "V" or something!

I was about to suggest the same thing.
I have been avoiding the recipe section because I hate wadding through all the fish recipes. It grosses me out

May I ask why dont you use beer and wine while cooking? A good alternative is vegetable broth.

I would love to see vegetable dishes too. I'm a vegetarian and I dont use any type of beer, wine etc in cooking. So it would really help if there are any good vegetarian dishes.

I think you should be able to put food names in a search to bring up recipes

Its not just a problem with vegetarian they need more classifications period to organize recipes so they are easy to find.

We eat fish, but I do not prepare vegetarian dishes. I, too, would like to see them separated. I gave up looking for a recipe for catfish that wasn't grilled. Too many other things that were not related to fish.

I, too, would love to see the vegetarian recipes separated from the fish. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. And while "fishing" through the recipes does not sicken me, it's a little annoying to spend all that time looking for vegetarian recipes amongst the fish ones.

Most people who are vegetarians for real, do not consider eating fish a vegetarian lifestyle. There's even a name for it these days: flexitarian. Those who mostly eat vegetarian, but also consume some animals.

I'd like to agree with everyone else here... I'm not a vegetarian, but I enjoy cooking vegetarian quite often. And while looking through seafood recipes doesn't make me feel sick, it is annoying. Yesterday I was looking for a good tofu recipe and I just gave up without finding one b/c it seemed the vast majority of the recipes were fish. :( I'd love to see teh categories changed too!

I know I'm beating a dead horse here (very bad pun considering...) but I would also enjoy seeing a Vegetarain-only recipe section instead of having it grouped with seafood.

It's nice to click on a link and just know that everything in there is going to be vegetarian.

Of course, I understand we could get really nit-picky about it, too, and end up making a vegetarian section and then a vegan section, since I'm sure vegans get tired of sifting through recipes labeled vegetarain but contain eggs or dairy or honey or whatever.

I appreciate the time you've taken to label the foods accordingly, though, and I realize this would be a huge undertaking to currently move things around - but I'll at least throw out the suggestion that the next time your technical team is ready to make any changes/improvements or whatever to the recipe section to separate the vegetarian dishes from the fish - just lump the fish with the other meats.

Being a big dreamer, I'm sure many people would even prefer it if you actually split out the recipe section more than that, like a lot of recipe books do - a section for beef, a section for poultry, a section for seafood, a section for grains and legumes, pasta, etc.

So- yeah... might not happen now, but hopefully these concerns can be taken into consideration for the next time you find yourself revamping the recipe section.

Thanks for reading.

(PS - don't forget to add a rating system and options for reader's comments on recipes!) :) I know, i'm demanding. But I'm patient, too.

VegPunk-
If that is true, could you please let me know the title of the recipe so I can move it to its appropriate section? That is an error and it shouldn't be there. Thanks!

I found one, I believe a pasta dish, in the veggie/fish section that included pepperoni. Hmmm. . .

Hahah. Perhaps we could put all the chicken and dessert recipes together as well then!???

We could submit so many vegetarian recipes that it's so hard to find the fish, that they will HAVE to separate them!

This has been a long-standing request. From a technological standpoint, moving recipes to another new section is a lot of work. As a free site, we have very limited resources. We choose to focus on adding new content, features and tools with the resources that we have, and we must prioritize on fixing things that will have the greatest benefit for everyone. We get tons of suggestions everday, and we always keep them in mind for the future.

so Coach Nichole, what can we whiny veg heads do to get more truly veg recipies in? (so it's big enough to split off perhaps?)

I think everyone understands that, but we are saying it grosses us out. Chicken vs Turkey is way diffrent that corpse vs not corpse.

I think that is what some of us are getting at.

Thanks for all the hard work, but i highly suggest http://www.vegweb.com for great totally veg recipes.

Allow me to re-post what I have already posted below (and in several other threads on this topic):

As a long-time vegetarian myself, I can understand your concern.

However, if we were actually lumping fish and vegetarian foods together to imply that vegetarians eat fish, then the recipe section would be called "Vegetarian" yet still include fish. This is not the case. They are listed as separate, distinct ideas that just happen to be on one page. As far as I have been able to tell (and I check regularly), every recipe that does include fish lists it in the title, making browsing the section easy to do.

Like many broad recipe categories on the site ("Poultry" which includes turkey and chicken, or "Appetizers, Soups and Salads" which contain a wide arrary of ingredients and types of foods), any person looking for a particular recipe will have to sift through the titles, whether you're looking for soup and having to skip over all the appetizers and salads, or want a chicken recipe but also having to sift through all that include turkey. In this manner, the "Fish & Vegetarian" section is no different than the others.

We have worked hard to build out our vegetarian and vegan recipes to offer more options to our veg'n members and hope you will continue to enjoy them.

true that:
would an omni want to weed thru "and add a gallon of toilet water to the soup..."?

It's similar (as in either a contamination, gross or simply not food) for veggies, especially ethical veggies. and are we not wanted members of Spark community?

I agree 100% and was just thinking of emailing sparkpeople before I found this thread.

A fish is NOT a vegetable. I am a strict vegetarian and I actually get sick in the pit of my tummy having to root through recipes with meat in them.

This is a common misconception that a "vegetarian" can eat fish. If it is meat of any animal, it should not be along side vegetarian.

Other then that little thing, I love this site :)

I would love it if they were separated also. I don't like having to weed through to find a recipe that I can use. :(

It was disheartening for me to see that as well, TruePeaceNik... Perhaps if everyone who cared would speak up, we could get that changed!

as a new user, I clicked into the recipies and thought "ohhh geez... maybe I don't want this place."
why would fish be different that separating beef and chicken?
and aren't most meals supposed to have veggies? how about "vegetable side dishes and entrees?"

i noticed that the pasta dishes are usually meatless but contain some sort of cream sauce which is not vegan. these factors should probably be considered too

We try to keep the titles in this section specific, using "Vegetarian" or "Vegan" often and labeling fish dishes with the fish they contain. There should not be any "meat" (non-fish) dishes, including pasta ones, in this section. If you notice things like that, please point it out so we can correct potential errors.

Thanks,

Nicole
