keep in mind that to have a successful recovery, you may want to actually bump up your caloric intake....ask your dr. limiting your calories could slow the healing process and you don't want that! look at that recovery time as a time to evaluate all the foods you want to incorporate into your diet when you start up again...start going through some of the recipes and seeing what sounds good. when I had surgery a couple years ago, I didn't need to worry about limiting calories for awhile...they limited themselves because I just didn't feel that great...probably the only time in my life that I had to REMIND myself to eat!!! I think you'll do fine with this...and just remember, you have all of us "grey heads" pulling for you!

| I know what you mean about asking the doctor about how much exercise should I do? well I am having surgery because the first one did not go so well so he is going in to fix the complications from that so he would not let me do a lot after the first one, but this time, I think after two weeks I am going to walk. I love to spin twice aweek, but I know it wont be posssible for three months.I should find out how many calories I can eat sitting on my butt all day.You sound like you are doing great. Thanks so much for getting back to me peggysue

I just had abdominal surgery a few days ago and can't do my exercises right now, but I usually do 2.5 - 3mi. or 300 cal. 6X weekly. I feel because of this my recovery will be alot less stressful. I feel real good even though I have to take it easy. I feel no matter what exercise you do it's better than none at all. I also feel that as you progress you will want to step up your exercises. I add a little more time or speed. What you feel you can do is up to you. BTW, I will be 62 in August. Good luck. Jeri

| I know you need to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound and our systems slow down every ten years. So I use a gazelle five days a week and also use it as a weight lifting tool. I also walk three times a week. I've been told we need to step up our walking speed once we've become accustomed to walking in order to burn the calories to lose the weight. I think losing one to one and a half pounds a week is very good for people in our age range. I don't think theres a set of rules for all of us, we need to consult our doctors about medications and medical problems before we can build our programs.

| Peggysue, please talk to your surgeon and tell him about your diet/exercise plans. He really needs to know these things before you have the surgery. Getting in shape ahead of time will make your recovery a bit easier, but you're probably not going to feel like exercising too much for awhile afterward, so don't get discouraged. (check with him if you can do some very light exercises afterward to keep your momentum going). Just realized that I'm "assuming" that you're having some major procedure...and maybe you're NOT! stress is a gigantic factor but my gosh...you walked 4 miles!! that sounds terrific...my dog and I can manage about 2.5 before her tongue is hanging out...and my butt is dragging!

57...almost 58....here. yes, I alternate cardio and strength too. I like to do water aerobics, with some water jogging 3 times/wk along with Tai Chi and walk, walk, walk. the alternate days I do my abd. crunches, leg lifts, and weights. how much should you be doing? do you have any health restrictions? any medical problems? if all is ok with that, then it really depends on how much you WANT to do....but the more you do, the more calories you burn. remember though, after a point & if you are consistently over-shooting your weekly goal for calories burned, you'll need to readjust your diet....your body starts (at some glorious point) to save up fat again...it thinks your starving if your exercise exceeds your caloric intake for a period of time...and then you actually need to increase your intake to help you lose! NOW THAT'S DIETING!!!
