| While in Vegas last week there was a couple walking around (in front of Ceasars) with a three foot tall glass of long island ice tea - kind of shaped like a thermometer (ball on the bottom and skinny and tall)with two, 3'-6" straws coming out the top. The drink was about 80% gone when I met them.... they were well on their way... You can do that in Vegas, walk out side with a drink (or open container) in your hand. What a city.

A few pages of a good book and the book falls out of my hands. I wake up only enough to turn out the light and stash my glasses. Movies or TV put me right to sleep, too. Occasional leg cramps are the only things that get me up. Those are much better now that I am exercising regularly and drinking more water. I am post menopausal, but thinking back even that didn't really keep me awake often. Guess I am just lucky.

| As I've gotten older, I've discovered a strange phenomenon -- I fall asleep really quickly, but in 10 minutes or so, I snap out of sleep and I'm wide awake. I suspect it all has to do with menopause, but I don't know. I'm trying to get to bed at the same time every night, and one thing I've noticed is that too many blankets and too much heat has a terrible effect on my sleep. What part of the country are you from? Here in Norcal, it's cool enough in the evening to want blankets, but it's not THAT cold.

How about the teeth guards that come with teeth whitening kits? Don't use the whitener, use a substitute material? Just a thought

I have started having problems since getting my CPAP for sleep apnea. I have an overbit and I found myself waking up with my front teeth sore at times. My dentist said it was caused by grinding my teeth and we talked about getting a mouth guard. I checked and at least the one my dentist would fit me for is over $500 and my insurance pays less than $200 of that so I'm not sure what I should do. How does the Valerian help? Anyone have any other ideas/help for me. Thanks
Kathy

I sleep well most of the time. Once in awhile I have a hard time falling asleep, if I eat too close to bedtime. I get 8 hours, and feel pretty good. I do get the blahs this time of year, waiting for Spring to arrive. I do dream, and the dreams are a mixed up mess of all of the jobs I have had, people I worked with, disorganized messes. I did have a good dream the other nite(One in a million) of buying a house with a little house in the back lot, full of antiques,it was so neat.
I think some of our meds, cause dreams and sleeplessness.

When I was about your age I had trouble sleeping. I worked the midnight shift and slept, or should have during the day, it was awful felt like a zombie. A friend and I went to a class on meditation. Now I do this daily and have for years. Sleeping problems ended as I remember the first week. Try it, there are lots of good books about the subject.

Thin,
There are some great articles about sleep in the Resource Centers that you might want to check out.
Hang in there!

I think a lot of people (women especially) seem to have more sleep problems around these ages and it can be due to hormonal changes. I actually had more problems when I was younger.
I was feeling tired all the time, despite having lost almost sixty pounds and my dr. suggested I be tested for sleep apnea. I kind of sluffed it off thinking no way I could have it. I knew I snored a little and had a lot of broken sleep episodes and never felt refreshed in the mornings.
My dr. even told me if you have apnea it can be the reason you are not losing more weight (as mine had been standing still quite some time despite sticking with my program.) I also felt too tired to exercise enough to do my cardio work outs, was beginning to fall asleep during day when reading, etc. So they gave me a written test which indicated I should have the overnight test.
Sure enough I have it and quite severe during REM too. For about six months now I have been using a machine to keep my airway passages open. I feel so much better and sleep so much better it is amazing.
There is a lot of misinformation about sleep apnea. A lot of people think only overweight people have it, while that can be the cause it can actually be just the opposite. Apnea can cause a person to gain weight due to the lack of energy you feel from lack of sleep. sleep apnea can cause heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and add to that weight gain
I am sure not implying you have it, but talk to your doctor about this too. Lack of sleep is not a good thing.

I grind my teeth in my sleep, I take Valerian, which helps the grinding problem, along with a good nights sleep.
