I ran the Cooper River 10k on Saturday. First time I had run over 5K, so I walked a little. Finished in an hour and four minutes. My feet are killing me but I will live.

I took almost two months off from running. I think the key is to build up slowly to a mileage per week. Working on Tri Sprint prep. now.

For anyone interested, last night I ran 5k. I have been working out at least 5 times a week, 30 mn. plus cardio, flexibility training, taking swimming classes. Have lost over ten pounds, almost all fat. I left the knee alone and now it is okay. I feel sure I can run the 10k April 1st.

It is my right leg. It hurts on the inside of the knee, below the knee. I am icing that knee at night, have stopped running for the time being, and know I need to work on my quads. Do you recommend a brace, i.e. a donut brace with no metal or anything?

Sounds like you were developing a touch of tendonitis in your knees. Take care of them, reduce the amount of pounding, stretch a lot, ice them down after your workouts, and build up your quad strength. That should help you out a lot.

Ken,

Good luck with the knee! I hope you're back to running soon!

Thanks. I have spoken with my trainer who suggested I ice the area and give it a rest. I also plan to have my friend, an orthopod, look at it.

I don't notice any swelling.

I have also done some research. If the guys at Cool running know what they are talking about, it is probably not runner's knee.

Nonetheless, it really hurts to run, so am not. I am trying to replace the running with swimming because I am really scared of losing fitness level and I want to continue losing weight.

Ken,

It's hard to say what could be going on. Are you having swelling? Did you have any pain when you were on the bike? You might just need to rest it for a few days and see how it goes. The knee is a pretty complex joint, so there are a wide variety of problems runners experience with their knees.

Hopefully it's just that you did a little too much and need to rest it. Keep us posted on how it's going!

I will be 42 in May, but over the last year have become very physically active after years of neglect, because I want to live to see my 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son's children one day.

Anyway, my wife and I are training for a 10k run, and maybe I got too aggressive, ran 3 miles one night, 2.5 miles two days later. Now my knee bothers me. Last run was Sunday night, did hard cardio on a stationary bike Monday. Iced it last night at trainer's advice. Anyone have experience with this? How long am I likely to be out? Any resources you can advise?
