| Swim Swim Swim Swim, and if you don't know how, it's a good time to learn. I was born with a bad hip and even though it's been repaired 2 times it was hard for me to do things like run so I joined the swim team. I have always been a good floater! Now I swim a good steady pace (no where near as fast as I was when I was 12, but good enough) and get about 2000 meters done in 30 minutes. I have gained muscle and lost inches. I am going in for a hip replacement in a week and can't wait to get it over with!

Hi everyone, I am new here and have Rheumatoid arthritis which affects all my joint especially hips and knees. My physical therapist suggested the stationary bike. I am able to walk slowly so I do that. Getting the weight off I know will help. I am looking at knee replacement in the future and want to be in better shape when it happens. The best way to find out which exercise is best for you is to have a conversation with your doctor and physical therapist and have them help you. Nancy

hELLO ALL,
I HAVE arthritis IN MY HIP JOINTS AND CAN NO LONGER RUN OR WALK VERY FAR. I HAVE TAKEN UP STATIONARY biking AND THAT HELPS. I REALLY MISS THE running AND SOME DAYS, I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING TO JUMP OUT OF MY SKIN IF I DON'T RUN, BUT OF COURSE, I KNOW I CAN'T SO I GET ON THE BIKE AND AWAY I GO. THE DR'S. SAY IT'S NOT BAD ENOUGH YET FOR REPLACEMENTS SO I TAKE A WALK OR SMALL RUN AND TAKE PAIN PILLS FOR A FEW DAYS. wHAT DO YOU ALL DO FOR EXERCISE? I AM GOING TO TRY YOGA. HAVE ANY OF YOU TRIED IT?

I had a nasty round of osteoarthritis a few years back. It got so bad I could barely walk. It started when I had some surgery and couldn't do anything for a while.
The funny thing was, not walking or exercising was making it worse... I didn't get better until a physical therapist (exercise) & my doctor (anti-inflamatories) helped me get moving again. You'd need to check with your doctor to see if your type of arthritis works the same way, but I had to walk to get rid of the pain! Nasty at first while it was hurting, but it really worked... I'm now back to doing EVERYTHING again. But now I need to lose all the weight I gained when I wasn't moving.
Hang in there and good luck!
