I'm Sue, 55. I had a hip replacement in September so I am "on the mend".
I'd like to add a suggestion about exercising that doesn't involve joint pain. What I absolutely love is playing in the water. I wouldn't go far enough to call it "water aerobics" but I move as well as I can. Sometimes I'll bring a noodle into the water and put it between my legs to "float". Then I can "bicycle" and things like that. The beauty of it is that it doesn't put weight on your joints and you can do what you can.
I am a newbie here and this is my first post. So, I'd like to know how things are going for everyone.

| It's so good to know that someone else is struggling like me. I was ready to sit down and eat some candy but then I read your message and it made me stop & think. Thank You! Getting back into my hobbies at night sounds like a great idea! I really like your idea of a scrapbook for my granddaughter - have to think about that. Thanks again!

My father had both knees replacements done at the same time ten years ago (did better than people having one done) and is waiting to go in Feb. for one redone. He is 84. Secret do the therapy that they tell you to do. He never missed a day. I too late night eater. I've decided (like Ophrey) only have piece of fruit two hours before go to bed. Making a scrapbook for each of my grandchildren of myself and husband's life from our childhood to now so if when they are older they will know us even if we are not here. Hope that will fill my evenings. This is first day of following my lose weight plan and just talking to you and knowing I am not alone is helping. Remember me tonight when you want to eat I'm going through the same thing-YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

| Lorna, I'm really afraid this weight will keep me from recovering from knee surgery as well as I want. I do great dieting during the day but it's nighttime that's the problem. When I smoked (10yrs. ago) I never ate at night but since then and with my husband leaving me I do eat at night. I don't like myself very much right now and that's why I HAVE to lose weight and get healthy!

| We sound like twins. I too am 59 have fibromalgia and severe sleep apnea-plus other medical problems. Feel good you beat me I have to lose 55 pounds. Never had much success before but feel with support maybe I can due it and it helps to see other people are going through the same thing. My husband is supportive but he can lose weight easy with much better willpower than I have so really I don't feel I can rely on him for help. Hang in there.

Well Lana is just short for Albadelana. well health is a large part of it and the fact that I am refusing to buy larger pants. So unless I want to go cold this winter I better take off that weight.

I have fribromyalgia also. At about the same time as I started hurting all over I started gaining weight. I work all day, so when evening comes I'm to tired to do the house chores. I'm just taking some advil now and then and tuff'in it out. Dr. said cardio and stretching exercise was OK but no resistance workout. I tried walking with my husband this morning but he left me in a trai of his smoke! Ha! Im a slow mover. Tomorrow is a new day, and we shall prevail!

| Hi! I have a sister in law that had a knee replacement. She was heavy and was not able to do a lot of the treadmill excercise. As a results her knee does not do as well as expected. I wish you lots of luck in loosing weight because with each pound off, I believe you will have a better recovery with your operations and rehabilitation. lANA

| I took a giant step today. I actually listed what I actually ate today. I was supprised at how much out of controll I was. It kinda shocked me a little to see how much I actually was consuming a day. The automatic nutrition counter really is a wonderment!! Right now my life is helter skelter and I can see that I need to pre plan what goes in my mouth better, not just grab the handy and the easy. Lana

| Is your name really Lana? This is a special name for me. I wish you so much luck in losing this weight. I can relate to you, as I have been through the disappointments with not sticking to a weight loss program. It is in our motivation. For me it is mainly health and I am sure it is for you too. Keep up the will to lose. Happy New year!

| I'm 59 and would like to lose 25-30 lbs. I had a pacemaker put in last year and am looking at knee replacement in the very near future and have decided I'll be happy and healthier with less weight. Like you I need all the encouragement I can get. My mantra has become, "slim & sexy @ sixty." My birthday is in June so I have some work to do.

Hello Ladies, I have had a ruff time getting back on my program since I have been at my son house. I don't want to mess up the work I have done this year. Today I am working at staying on my program. The new year is almost here want to start the new year in the black, not the red. Ha ha
We all need encouragement, that is true we have to remember to pat our self on the back for small accomplishments as well as the big ones we reach.

Jen,
Thanks for replying!
I have decided on my own not to do the south beach Diet because of the issues I already mentioned.
I am so very happy I found SparkPeople! I was a member a long time ago, and typical of me never did the plan. Because I now have gained more weight and have a bad back, I have to lose this weight! I have this week off of work and have been on the internet for hours searching for the right plan. Then I remembered this site and here I am! I will do this plan, but will need help. I have this awful problem of joining a site, make out the menus, shop, then cook whatever I want with the food in the house. I can't keep doing this.
I am excited I remembered this site and really think this is my last chance.
Thank you for a wonderful site and for replying. I am a little confused about the plan, but after a back treatment today will go online and get this all figured out!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks again! Carol

Sandy,
If walking is not an option, could you try the stationary bike or swimming? Both of those would be good options and might be better for your back.
Shebathecat- Have you considered getting a second opinion about your doctor's diet recommendations, or asking them for a referral to a nutritionist? I don't want to say your doctor is wrong, but there can be a lot of negative side effects from doing a diet like Atkins, besides the fact that if you try to go back to eating normally, you can easily gain a lot of the weight back. There are other ways to lose the weight in a more healthy way (like the recommendations on SparkPeople).
If there's anything else I can do to help, let me know!

I am 57 years old so I think I fit here! I also have fibromyalgia, and a spine issue. I think it's called spondylolestheses or something like that. Anyway, it's where a couple of vertebrae have dropped down and are pressing on the spinal cord and nerves, etc. I am under a Dr.'s care but right now he says I am not to exercise or even walk.(Daily walking in life is ok, but not to "take walks" or do treadmill, etc.) He says in a couple of weeks we will get going on movements. He wanted me to do the south beach Diet and go into Ketosis. He said because I can't exercise losing weight will be 100% with diet and says the high protein way is the only way. Well, my joints ache with all the protein and I'm sure I'll die (ha...) without carbs. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. He said the achy in joints is normal for high protein diets. Help!!???? I'll keep my posting shorter in the future. Just needed to explain what's going on. Thanks!

Lana,
Welcome to the program! I would suggest you start slowly, setting 2-3 small goals to work toward over the next few weeks. That can help you build momentum and establish a routine. You're right- even small amounts of weight loss can make a difference, as can small amounts of exercise. I've worked with a lot of people with fibromyalgia who see improvements in their condition by exercising.
If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know!

| I am 59 and have never felt so bad, and weighed so much( 30-40 lbs to loose). I have been through a lot of tests this year and all they came up with is that I have firbromyalgia, and mild sleep apena. So with all my aches and pains I hardly feel like doing anything at all. But I know that I will feel better with something even as small as a 5 lb. loss.
