Thanks for that Betty, I had forgotten about popcorn. Many years ago when I reached Life Time Membership I used it as a standby. t.c. Sea.

I have been eating low fat popcorn over the week end at night. stress test is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:15, will be glad when that is over and I know the results, not knowing the unknown can drive me nuts at times. Food is okay today so far, plan on 2 cups of pop corn tonight for snack with water instead of diet soda. I am hanging in there, many thanks.

Betty hang in there, there must be some kind of "legal" treat you could eat. Thats what I do I think "now what is the least harmful but tasty thing I could eat" I know nothing but eating will satisfy me. I know we should re direct ourselves from comfort eating but I have yet to find anything that takes it place. Hope all goes well for you.

Well went for surgery clearance and found out that I now have to have a stress test abnormal EKG. At first wanted to just eat and eat that is how I have always dealt with stress issues. Trying very hard not to go back to that old habit it really is not a choice anymore for health reasons. I sure can identify with getting down but getting up putting all this extra weight on shot knees is not fun. Beautiful day here today in Florida. bettyjg

I try to walk during my lunch hour at work with a walking buddy. We walk about 3 miles. We are very compatible because we walk at the same speed. My husband and I walk at home on the weekends about 3-5 miles once a day. But walking alone will not lose the weight. I was on the south beach diet in 2004 and lost 16 lbs. If you give up all white foods (white rice, bread, potatoes) and sodas and sweet tea, I promise you'll lose weight. The sweet tea is my downfall. Drink lots of water (at least 8 glasses a day). You can add those Splenda sweeteners to your water, but my sister-in-law who had gastric bypass surgery said sodas cause you to be bloated, not to mention 140 calories per can with no nutritional value. Good luck. Want to be my diet buddy? I have not been able to navigate this program yet.

Hi. I'm new to this, but my son just got engaged on New Year's Eve and I HAVE TO lose 25-30 pounds by the wedding at the beginning of August just to feel decent in a dress. I have a complicated diet, as I'm totally lactose intolerant and also can't digest beans of any kind. To top it off, the only proteins I eat are poultry, fish, and eggs (I was a vegetarian for too many years to be comfortable with red meat.) I'm cut out most sugar since the engagement announcement, but the biggest problem is getting motivated to exercise. I'm a writer/editor and sit in front of a computer all day, and I work from home, too close to the kitchen. I'd love to have a diet journal "buddy" to put this experience into words and also have some support. Anyone interested?

I am not doing so good this first week of January. I gained 3 pounds over the holidays. I started walking 30 minutes today. I want to do that at least 5 days a week. Anybody out there know how to motivate me?

I agree a way to stay motivated is to make a commitment to a weekly or daily class. Since I am retired now I plan on going to the class twice a week. Weighed today lost a pound, finally feeling better after having a bout of the flu these past few days. Good point it really helped me get back on track staying away from fried, creamed and starchy foods. Have a good day everyone. betty

Hello "New and About-to-be Retirees,"
A really good way to stay motivated is to join a class. It's a good way to make new friends and, when you want to slack off, you know someone is going to ask "where were you last Friday? Slept in, eh?" I had to stop going to a late afternoon class during the winter because I don't drive at night. I really do miss those folks and plan to return as soon as Daylight Savings Time begins again in April. I find, too, that there are instructors whose classes are especially good, and that helps to motivate me.

Our pool reopened today and it felt so good to get back to it. Melt away, you fat cells!

Rosalynn, I just retired on 12/15 and am planning on adding water aerobics twice a week. When the weather is bad I try to hit a mall and do some extra walking, have bad knee so I am limited. Congrats on your retirement. Can identify with some of you having family move back in with you, are youngest daughter (26) just moved back in Christmas Eve till she can get back on her feet and get a apartment. Have eight grandchildren ranging from 12 to 26 years old all living here in Florida. Been sick with the flu since New Years Day so food has not been a problem, sure not the way I would choose to deal with it on a daily basis. betty

Well, I guess over 50 is okay, but over 60 is even better. The only problem is staying motivated. It seems the older I get the less I am motivated to make changes in my lifestyle. I hope this year is different, and that I can once again get the diet and exercise thing going. Let's do it together.

Hi Rosalyn
I would suggest you plan when and how often you are going to exercise once you retire. Most people I find are even busier once they retire than ever before . I have grandkids I mind in emergencies, am publicity officer for a 55 & Over Group, a delegate also for this group. I joined u3A and go to several activities, I joined a Theatre Appreciation Group which meets fortnightly and goes to many shows, a couple of girlfriends and I enjoy occasional movies, I joined Toastmasters, quoits club and am thinking of an indoor bowls club. I also joined a Digital Photography group so with the homework involved etc I hardly have time to fit in exercise, . My daughter who has moved in with me goes to a gym and is encouraging me to fit in a session today before we go to a Korean Bath House for a body scrub and massage. This will be my ongoing treat as it leaves you so relaxed and your skin so smooth. Have a good day everyone. P.S. We will lunch on a diet friendly lunch.

I'll be 60 on 1/18/06. I will be retiring 3/31/06. I think I'll have more time to exercise when I'm retired because it is hard to fit in all in when you are working. Today I walked at lunch which is what I prefer to do. It makes me feel good and gives me energy for the remainder of the day.

Happy New Year, Everybody!
How are we doing? I'm using the food tracker again (a resolution), but, after lunch out with friends, it's tracking a bit high. Oh, well. At least, I'll be honest with myself by recording it all.
Here's for a better and lighter 2006!

Carolyn

It is comforting to hear someone else talk about white foods and fruit being a problem. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one. I have 100# to loose and I am hoping, when I do, I will have more energy for the grandkids. Having them living with us wears me out. I also hope that loosing weight will lessen the pain of my arthritis - YES! We are too old for this, but the alternatives are not accerptable. Happy New Year!!!

hello everyone, my name is peggy and i live in texas and im 68. i have 2 grown kids and 3 grankids, no one lives with us, thank god, i don think this weary body could do all the things you need to do to raise grankids. i bowl 2 x a week and have a dog kennell, so i work outside at least 3 hrs every day. im on a lo carb/hi protein plan, and i have 10 lbs to lose to get back to my goal weight. the christmas holidays just did me in, or rather i did me in with the sweet white flour products, i have a real problems with sweets, and i have to watch the amount of fruits i eat, eventho they are healthy, they can cause me to go on a sweet binge. i saw so many of my friends who were overweight get bad knees and hips so i decided i was not going to be fat anymore, and it has taken me 5 years to lose 65 lbs, but i got it off. this site is so friendly and i love to read the posts. have a really good diet plan day tomorrow and lets all wage a war on our fat. bye peggy

Welcome Jo, sounds like you are having a lot of Holiday weather. Here in Florida it is suppose to go up to 81 today but we have a lot of fog right now. Planning to get together with our oldest daughter to celebrate the New Year sometime this weekend. Can relate to weather effecting arthritis I have it in my bad knee and when it is damp it really aches. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year, and ready to make some serious commitments to reach a realistic goal for better health, energy to be able to enjoy my new retirement this coming year. bettyjg

We should be having temperatures in the single digits, but we continue to be just above freezing. We had 4" of snow last night and today, and more is coming. It is a heavy wet snow that is hard to move. Because of the high humidity, my arthritis is flaring today, but by the end of the week the weather is supposed to be colder and dryer! My real name is Jo - so I'll stay the same as well. It is wonderful for you to be awaiting another grandchild. I pray that all will go well. Have a happy and blessed new year!

The wonder of the world weather, total fog here this morning, not a breath of wind, supposed to be 40C but hopefully the breeze will come up and cool us here and of course being on a bay we can swim. I am off to "wash the grey away" hoping I wont get a phone call that grandchild no. 6 is on its way. It will be new years eve tonight and I wish you all a very successful year, and be much healthier by this time next year. By the way my real name is Carolyn also, but I have got used to mostly being called "Sea" on line so I will stick to that.

Carolyn, I too just retired for the second time two weeks ago and am enjoying it very much. Hopefully the weather will be warmer next week and I will start water aerobics next Tuesday again. Haven't got back on the scale since before Christmas putting it off until after New Years. Have been doing as much walking as possible till pain in knee gets bad. Need to get back to tracking my food again, going to make commitment to start tracking today and not eat in between meals. Everyone have a great day. bettyjg

Yeah! Some Spark folks who are also over 60! Hello, everyone!

I'm 66 and am enjoying my first full year of retirement. I'm finding that it is easy to fill up the weeks and it is much more fun than the stress of a 9-5 job. I too do water aerobics classes (or water walking on my own) and have been trying to do Nautilus strength training 2X/week. But our pool is closed for the holidays (and for maintenance) and I've been too tempted by all the cookies and candies at my volunteer job. All caution went flying out the window the week before Christmas with an "I'll get back to it after the New year" attitude. Now, it's hard to leave the stuff alone, and the scale has crept up about 4 lbs.

For those with knee problems, water walking is a good choice if you have a pool available. We have folks at our pool doing their therapy that way after knee and/or hip surgery. With the water, there's no stress to the joints. And it feels so good!

Good evening! I got home from work a bit ago and had dinner with my husband and granddaughter. I have several hours of paperwork to do tonight, so I guess I won't be exercising, again. We have a small pool at a motel in the next town where I can rent time. I don't know any exercises to do, so I just swim what I can. walking outside is difficult right now because we have a lot of ice. We had a thaw, so the pavement got wet and then froze again. There are very few sidewalks in our town. I can walk at the school, but I would have to figure out how to get extra support for my knees and feet. The larger stores are 1/2 hour away - so with working and having the grandkids, going there is difficult. I can find many excuses - now I need to get moving!!! Thanks for the suggestions.
