Oh i love how broad the grocerie horizon has spread. So many little organic stores have popped up all over the place. Rasin rack, whole foods, trader joes. I love them all, especially rasin rack. I can buy a 10 oz can of organic cat food for $0.99 (has apples, cranberries, carrots, potatoes, fresh fish ..chicken etc.)
The human variety also makes me happy. I love morning star products, especially their broccoli cheese snacks (baked not fried!). Anything organic makes me happy. And all the extra soy products, i adore soy (lactose intolerant).
I donno, i'm done rambling.

| Trail mix is a good thing to take on trips - and is pretty high protein compared to other things that need to be refrigerated. Make your own with a lot of nuts and only a bit of dried fruit and cereal like Cheerios, if you're trying to be low-carb.

I haven't tried this, in fact I just received it in my inbox about 5 minutes ago from lowfatgoodcooking@yahoogroups.com. It sounds really good.
** CHEESE FRIES **
Prep Time | 10 min. Cook Time | 45 min. Level of Difficulty | Easy
1 serving olive oil cooking spray, or enough to coat baking sheet 2 large potato(es), Idaho, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch thick strips 1/8 tsp table salt, or to taste 1/8 tsp black pepper, or to taste 1/2 cup low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 400ºF. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.
Arrange potatoes on prepared baking sheet and season to taste with salt and pepper. Bake until golden brown and fork-tender, about 40 minutes. Move potatoes so that they are close together on baking sheet; top with cheese. Bake until cheese melts, about 5 minutes more.

| Yes, DAINALYNN, meal plans help a ton. That's the first step in my shopping, is to sit down and plan out our meals. It sure helps me stay on track with healthy foods, too!

In my experience, it's easier to use all my veggies in my fridge if I have a meal plan for the week. Otherwise, I throw out too much wasted food.
If you plan to eat fresh and more tender veggies at the beginning of the week (greens, herbs, etc) then you can leave the frozen or more hearty veggies until the end of the week (ie, root veggies). This makes the most of my shopping trips. You might find yourself dropping by a market once for a "top up" of fresh produce, but it's not a huge ordeal if you only have a list of 3-5 items.

Well, there are factors that WOULD need to be explained! First of all, I do have to make the occasional run to the grocery store, if I've forgotten something, etc. Secondly, I'm spoiling myself a bit right now by having my groceries delivered to me. I'm raising my 2 very young granddaughters on my own right now, and although they're no problem at all in the grocery store, I live in a 3rd floor condo, and it's carrying everything up that gets to me (bad back). So, while they're living with me, I do my shopping that way. Thirdly, if there are meats that I should use without freezing (ex: making meatballs from scratch), I use that meat first, and freeze everything else. Same with produce, I use fresh fruits/veggies first, and I do buy bags of frozen as well for later on. Lastly, the company that I buy from, Peapod, has excellent produce that seems to last a bit longer than the normal grocery store.
I have people ask me about the cost - most of the things I buy are no more expensive than the local grocery, and they have sales each week as well. Delivery is reasonable enough considering the pain it's preventing me from experiencing!!! It's well worth the couple of dollars that it costs for delivery!

| This is slightly off the topic.. well kind of... how do you shop for a week to 10 days all at once when some of your shopping needs things that will go bad by then, for example, lettuce, over produce, and meat?

I LOVE to grocery shop and always have. Dont know why.I agree that there are a whole lot more healthier choices out there and it makes grocery shopping an adventure I think. Becky, I love your Twain saying!! HOW TRUE IS THAT!!!Have a cup of coffee or tea on me !!!

I agree with the observations about healthier foods.
I also have to say that even though I've never really minded grocery shopping, now that I plan meals for a week to ten days at a time, I really do like shopping. I spend less time in the store, I spend less money. And the biggest benefit is that I'm eating healthier.

I did grocery shopping yesterday. The only reason I didn't enjoy it as usual is my 14-year-old son was with me . . . need I say more??? He finally went to the car "to listen to the radio" - I found him sound asleep!
I printed some recipes from SP and got the ingredients - can't wait to try them. Grocery shopping is my "alone" time - and my family surely doesn't mind!

| I also, hate to do grocery shopping, *done it for 30 plus years* I would be quite content to order my groceries and have them delivered to my door, lucky for me, my hubby has been doing the grocery shopping this year! Yippee! The down side is when I try to cook or bake, Yikes, I don't have the right stocked ingredients, that makes it harder but I WILL NOT COMPLAIN, since Idon't have to go to the store, often that is!

Crise, I find with produce that even though it is a touch more expensive (unless it is on sale), buying by the pound far outweighs the preportioned produce. I figure what more I am paying, I waste and throw out just as much when I buy the other way.
When it is on sale by the pound, I buy like crazy and plan my meals for that week around it, or if it is freezerable, plan some freezer cooking around it. For example when eggplant was cheap, I bought a ton, then made as many recipes as I could that week around eggplant. What was left I breaded and made eggplant parmesan to stick in the freezer for later.

| I love grocery shopping because I love cooking. And I am finding more and more healthy, tasty things that I can make. I just wish that fresh produce was cheaper!! Or available in smaller quanities for those of us that shop for just 1 or 2.

| I have to say that I hate grocery shopping. I also have to make a weekly menu and a list ahead of time. Otherwise I spend way too much time wandering aimlessly through aisles. I wish my grocery store had the start system that MINYAD's does. I spend a ton of time reading labels. It takes forever.

I agree. Even the stores themselves are starting to become helpful to our nutrition.
One of our local grocery stores, on the label with the foods name and price on the shelf/flag has added a star system in the entire store. 5 stars is your best choice (fresh fruits, veggies etc) down to 1 star (little nutritional value). Even a 3 year old can walk into that store and make healthy choices and learn by looking for a certain number of stars.
Another one of our local stores puts out a brochure every 3-4 weeks with new healthy products in the store and tips and recipes etc. They also have a lot of free brochures of like the 5-a-day (veggies) program, explaining different cuts of meat, vitamins etc.
Not to mention all those "organic" sections of the store

Hello! I'm a fellow grocery shopper who cares as much as you do! Our weight loss and nutrition is much easier - as has been said - than even as recent as 5 years ago. The better choices are there for us for the taking.
I know that when I was the most successful at my weight loss, I would get the weekly grocery ads and plan my meals for the week. And that helped me stick to my plan. It involved grocery shopping (which I like), cooking (which I thoroughly enjoy), eating (which I adore), but most importantly, losing weight and feeling better (which was the most rewarding)!

I agree. Grocery shopping is one of my favorite things to do as long as my husband and sons stay at home!! I love to be able to go and look for new things and read all the labels. They are usually in such a hurry to get out of there that I just grab what's on my list as fast as possible.
Where I shop they have a wonderful produce section and are carrying a lot more options in other departments as well that a few years ago you would have to go to a specialty store for.

Well it's nice to see so many companies stepping up to the plate. There are so many more great things you can buy at the store now than even 5 years ago. I think the focus used to be for food companies to make really yummy (aka, full of fat and salt) and cheap foods. Now, I see a lot of effort to create healthful foods at fair prices. The organic craze has fueled this in a good way, IMO.
What do you guys think?
