try this, mash a banana with a splah of fat free milk...add a little splends and a little cinnamon, top with a sprinkiling of oatmeal, and maybe even a few sliced almonds. also if you want a few chunks of apple. yum. so good.

Would you share your quark recipe? I lived in Germany for 7 years and some things are just really hard to replicate over here although I've made my own schupfnudeln, maultaschen and tried the breads but flour is different.
Glad you like the tips. I don't have a degree in cooking but I sure do love to eat and have about 25 years of dabbling and reading about dabbling with food so I have a few clues to share around.

I like making my own quark (soft milk cheese/yogurt kind of thing) and soaking my muesli in that overnight.
Very European!

European musli recipes often call for soaking oats overnight with dry fruits and nuts. You can add any kind of milk to soak it and then cover and leave in the fridge just to soften.
My boyfriend does his by putting large cut oats in a bowl with raisins and then steaming by putting boiling kettle water on it and covering it with a plate. It sits for 5 to 10 minutes and comes out fluffy.
The key to regular fluffy oatmeal (not the pasty stuff! BLECH!) is to boil the water in the pot first and then sprinkle the oats slowly in. As each little flake hits the pan it plumps a bit and the dry powder on the surface forms a coating that is cooked. That way the flakes stay separate. If you mix cold water in the oats and heat, the powder makes a gravy with the water and just cooks up like a gelatinous mass.
I always let mine cook for a few minutes and then add another small handful of dry flakes and stir them in so I get a bit of a chewy bite.
Yummy oatmeal!

I was *raised* on a breakfast of raw oats with milk and sugar...  If you're not fond of pasty oatmeal, make sure to make it with regular cut oats, not quick or instant... it makes a HUGE difference!

chefchip mentioned Bob's Red Mill 5 grain cereal...I have to tell you about their High Fibre Hot Cereal with flaxseeds....It has 27grams of carbs and a whopping 10 grams of fiber. For those who deduct their fiber from their carbs like I do, that means one serving only has 17 grams of carbs. Also 8 g of protein, 5 g Fat and no cholesterol or Sodium. What's not to love?!? I often add some of this cereal to my bread mix to fiber it up.

| Many desserts have a combination of butter, sugar/brown sugar, flour and oats all mixed together for a topping. Sometimes I do this for the tops of cakes or cobblers. So tasty!

| My husband quite often eats it with milk like any other dry cereal. I personally love mine...cooked for six minutes in the microwave with cinnamon and cut up apples. I have it most mornings. Yum!

If you have access to Bobs Red mill products, try their 5 grain cereal...
Its about what you are describing, but dang is it good! its very convenient because it is all wrapped up into one package.

| no bake cookies (the kind with chocolate and peanut butter) have oatmeal in them and it isn't cooked. Those haven't killed me yet! :) But I'm sure its fine, its not like something that needs the bacteria killed off to eat safely, like meat.

| I actually prefer the texture of uncooked oats to cooked. When it comes to oatmeal, I am all about the texture and can't stand wallpaper paste oatmeal!! Most the time I steam it, but this last week, I have been soaking it in 1/2 cup of light soy milk, putting it in the microwave for 45 seconds and adding a scoop of protein powder, flax seed, and wheat germ. It's my usually "breakfast" as I work nights. Other times, I mix in cooked eggwhites for a protein source instead of the protein powder.

No, uncooked oatmeal wont harm you..it will help you....cooking actually kills some nutitional value in foods! Hence the raw food movement. In some foods cooking will actually heighten values...lycopene in tomato sauce as one example.
Mix oats with anything...it's called stealth nutrition...from adding it to yogurt, as everyone seems to love...to adding it to muffin mixes, prepackaged cereals, ice cream, trail mixes, granolas, meatloaf...whatever!

I saw your thread title and panicked because I've been eating it raw for years and even feed it to my kid. I thought, oh no! what if its bad if it's not cooked. *wipes sweat off brow* on that note, I like mine mixed with yogurt, we call it yogi-oats in my house.

Recently I started eating my oatmeal uncooked with a mashed banana. its really goodand I enjoy it as a snack or a small meal. Is it bad for me to eat uncooked oatmeal? Thanks =)
