Chilli is reasonably cheap and can be made in bulk if you have a big pot.

Cupcakes are nice if you have time to bake and frost them, so you don't have to deal with a big messy cake.

Pasta with sauce, kept warm in a chafing dish with sterno under it.

Raw veggies and homemade hummus dip, mmm healthy!

Go to wholesale store and see what other tasty things they have!

Short pasta, tomato sauce, garlic toast (bread slices, oil, garlic powder, herbs).
Let everyone know what your menu is. If they want something different, they can bring a dish.

How about a pot luck? Whenever I am invited over to someone's house, I always ask what can I bring. I feel uncomfortable letting one person do all the work for such a large crowd. So when you invite your relatives, and they offer to bring something, don't turn them down - tell them what you need. Be ready with ideas though.

Have the party at 3PM and just serve Cake and Ice Cream.
If you are a member of Sams club and yours has a bakery their cakes are REALLY GOOD, and cheap! I bought a half sheet cake with butter cream frosting for $15.00 and my mom had called a local bakery and they wanted $50!
If you have to serve dinner food - Sams also has large veggie trays, frozen meatballs, or weenies to just cook in crock pot. This would be PLENTY of food.
I also had about 30 people at ours. My mom made a bunch of home made Hawiian meatballs, then had mixed fuit (from frozen bag) and weenies with BBQ sauce on them. I had way too much left over.

Keep it simple if you are on a tight budget.

my son's first birthday is next month and I need something cheap(I'm a stay at home mom and on a tight budge,) to make for about 35-40 people. I know, a lot of people for first birthday, but I have a large family and that's first intermediate family so there's no giving on this part, and that's just me, my husband too. Their ALL loco, I'm mean local.-------EVER
