I have six cans of chickpeas in my cabinet. Six, because I forgot that I had three cans in my cabinet already and bought three more at the store the other day.
My fiance’s family is Indian. His mom called him today about something else and before she hung up he asked her what to do with so many chickpeas. All she could say was, “Make channa.” And didn’t elaborate.
Oooookay. I don’t even know what “channa” is, let alone how to make it. (I am not Indian, his mother lives 3 hours away and is mostly unavailable to teach me, and my mother never taught me how to cook beyond pasta and frozen Things From A Box, so I’m learning all this on my own!) How do I make that? And what else can I do with chickpeas? Side dishes? Main dishes? What do I serve with them?
