What veterinarian is Ellen taking her dog and cat to that told her it would be appropriate to place her animals on a vegan diet? Its something that sounds nice and fancy at first but seriously? Neither dogs nor cats are herbivores. Cats are strictly carnivorous and dogs are omnivorous. Cats REQUIRE meat in their diets for the taurine. Their bodies cannot produce it naturally and without it they will basically waste away to nothing and die.
If you're going to change your cats food to help her/him lose weight you can try a calorie/fat restricted diet from your veterinarian (the office I work for recommends Science Diet R/D) but there are also healthy weight foods that you can get from Petsmart/Petco.
Please don't place your cat on a vegan diet!

We are in the process of changing our dog's food. The Weimaraner we discovered after being fed 4 cups + a day was getting skinny, started eating his poo, and had some very RAUNCHY gas!
We did some research and discovered that he wasn't getting enough nutrition from the Puppy Chow we were giving him. So we started feeding him more and he started to gain some weight. But the other problems didn't go away. So we went to PetSmart and they showed us to this dog food thats more healthy and has less fillers. We have decided to give it to both of the dogs.

Ballerina2009 it may have been the buffalo was too rich to start her off with. The recommendation is bone in chicken breast to begin with. You shouldn't give weight bearing bones of large mamals either because they can be too hard and actually do more damage than good to the teeth. The only part of beef bone I feed is oxtail and ribs, anything bigger is too big. Whole chickens, whole rabbit, whole sardines, trout, herring, pork shoulder and beef heart and tongue is the basic menu i use with some liver and kidney added occasionally. His favourite recreational chew is a pigs head although we will cut the cheeks off to feed at another time as they are each a meal in themselves. £12 worth of mixed meat lasts a whole week to ten days. £12 worth of kibble would only last 4 days!!!
Unfortunately I haven't yet managed to get my cats to eat a completely raw diet as they won't eat enough variety to make it a balanced diet so they do end up with kibble every now and again, but I use the best I can afford and grain free where possible but it doesn't seem so easy to come by in the UK. I'll keep trying with them though.
JADECATKINS: You are so lucky you can feed your pets raw food. I tried multiple times with my dog (a 6 yr old shy and sweet German shepherd mix), bought expensive raw buffalo bones and she would not touch them. It would be so good for her teeth too. These modern dogs are used to canned food a processed crap. I wish she ate raw meat and fish. I have a friend that swears by that diet, she says her dog's coat got so much better.

Well Ellen can have her dogs on a vegin diet, but that is not what their bodies need to be healthy and happy. I purchase the best food that I can for their needs. I research the different brands and she is healthy. Dogs are not vegitarians and rabbits are not connavorious
Keep on track

I guess if they are morbidly obese and their health is at risk that it might be o.k. Mine lost 1 pound just by cutting portions from her previous companion....she was feeding her way too much by doggie guidelines.................(she only needed to loose a little bit)
I just saw an advertisement for a weight controlled science diet. Reminds me of Jenny Craig or Nutri system you buy this pre-packaged servings and treats for your pet depending on their size so they can lose weight.
When I adopted my dog, she apparently had allergies to wheat and corn. She eats 4-Health dog food......I also had to get rid of all of her much loved milk bone doggie and other treats and she eats chicken jerky now (dog treat)........
