Thanks, MaryAlice, I think you've hit on my problem. I'm putting in the time but not a great enough effort. I kind of felt that was the reason I was plateaued, but haven't really worked at pushing myself. Gotta start doing that!

What helps me when I've reached a bump and added some weight, is to go back to what the Dr told me when he told me I needed to lose weight. No fried foods and no concentrated sweets then I start working on other things like portion size.

The other thing is to look at me exercise. I have found that yes I'm putting in the time, but not the effort. I up the intensity of my exercises. A little at a time. Mutt and I love our walks and I find them a good stress release, but adding even 15 or 20 min a day of exercise that really raises my heart rate and makes me sweat and I don't mean the sweat of standing on the porch in this heat and steam bath we are having, helps a whole lot.

I am interested in this topic, too. I have been on SP for several years and got down 20 pounds, but couldn't get lower (that is still considered obese). I was doing really well with my eating changes, exercise a few times a week, etc., but I gained everything back and can't seem to get back with it. I don't have the gas money to go to the pool and that was the exercise I liked most often, along with Zumba at the rec center, but can't get there either. So I need to find some way not to just give up completely. I guess some of it was even though I got things pretty well the way I should, I found out I still end up with the problems that diabetes cause, and I was completely in control of that.

I look at myself in the mirror - naked! (I'm just a couple pounds short of being categorized as obese, so . . .) And when I go to the store or walking in the park, I look at people who are larger than me. Not at their size, but at how hard it is for them to do the everyday things in life. How they huff and puff, have a hard time bending over, how hard it is for them to get up from a blanket on the ground. And I think about the things I enjoy doing, working in my yard, going out to things like concerts in the park, taking a long walk in the evening. And things I want to do before I die. (A friend of mine who is my age has done the hike down the Grand Canyon twice in recent years.) And I ask myself what I what out of what is left of my life.

PJ - diets just do not make a permanent fix because they don't teach us how to eat for our body's needs. View this process as a lifestyle change. Learn to eat healthy, giving your body the nutrients it needs to be healthy. It will reward you by beginning to drop the weight. Making permanent changes to the way we eat and exercise will help us drop the weight and keep it off.

emoticon and don't give up. I didn't diet before, I just refused to believe I was over weight. Then the Dr told me I either lost weight or they operated on my leg. I lost weight, was in a car accident, gain it back, lost it again, broke my ankle, gained it back, lost weight Daddy pased gain some of it back and am losing again. That is just the way it is.

I have been overweight for 45 years now. I have never ever stayed on a diet for more than a week.

I'm wondering if I should just finally give up. I worry about my future health if I do, but I just can't seem to do this.

Since we are all over fifty on this SparkTeam, I'm hoping some of you understand the whole "overweight for a lifetime" challenge. What keeps you from giving up? What helps you to continue the fight?

I need some encouragement.
