That sounds like a good recipe. We make a chicken chili and spice it up, more than we should, but spices get your metabolism working. Can use all the help I can get getting it working :-)

I don't know if this one will keep going or if we start a "February 2009 Goals" discussion, but I thought I would post for the last couple of days.

On both Friday and Saturday I made my 8(+) glasses of water and my 6500 steps . . Friday @ 7735 and Saturday @ 13928.

I have done pretty good for January meeting the 2 goals I set for myself. I will probably keep the 6500 steps goal going in February (since I didn't make it consistently), but will put a new goal where the "8 glasses of water a day" goal was (since I made it pretty much everyday).

Hope everyone is doing well!!

Bye for noew

Start I'd stop in and mention that yesterday was not a day where I achieved the January goals. Had to do an emergency trip to our manufacturing plant and didn't get home from work until 8pm. Sigh...

Today is going much better. Asparagus was on sale and I enjoyed having it with dinner. And for dinner, I found an easy soup called Spicy Chicken Soup on the Cooking Light web site and adapted it fit what I had on hand. Except - I bought the chipoltes in Adobo sauce suggested in the recipe. The chipoltes in it are great - and very spicy. I used a medium onion instead of the scallions, one and third cup of frozen corn kernels since they were on hand, and I used a sweet red pepper since I had one in the house. Also used low sodium chicken stock instead of the chicken broth and I threw the remainder of a rotisserie chicken into the pot instead of buying pre-cooked processed (and probably high sodium) chicken in the grocery store.
Here's the link if anyone is interested.

r.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_idR>=365449

I froze 4 portions of the soup, and ate one for supper. So when all the adding of calories was done, it ended up being less than what is posted on the above link per serving.

Have I mentioned how much I like Cooking Light magazine and especially their recipe site?

Great job, YORKIE! I ate all my freggies yesterday, but went over on my calories. That tired, eating frenzy again. Blah. This has been a difficult slump for me, but I am determined to pull myself out of it.

Well, I did it today !! I managed to drink my 8+ glasses of water and make my 6500 steps . . I actually walked 11,065 . . I am proud of myself for that. I even took my walk at work for lunch today. I won't be able to walk tomorrow, myself and one other person will be the only ones in the office. We are a little short handed this month.

I have to stop making excuses and just do it or it won't get done. Nobody else can exercise for me . . oh wouldn't that be nice . . and you get skinny when someone else exercises for you . . emoticon . . never happen. So I am going to keep at it and plugging away.

Thank you Owlwho for the encouragement, that helps. Congrats on making your goals.

Congrats to VBALLJOAN, too !!!

Hope everyone is having a great day and making their goals !!

Bye for now.

The only thing that got me on the bike today was "the goal". I'll bike home tonight and to/from work tomorrow. I will meet that goal. Now if only I could be so committed when it comes to my eating. emoticon

About excuses...last March I had 7 miles to go to complete my monthly mileage goal and it was March 31st and raining. So because I had set the goal, I went out and walked in the pouring rain. Part of the motivation, of course, was to keep up with my pal Owlwho. emoticon Can't let her get too far ahead!

Sounds nummy! I landed under my calorie range again yesterday and ate all my freggies. I went to bed early, but family discussions in the hall outside my room woke me a couple of times. Luckily I was able to get back to sleep.

I am still struggling with evening snacking, but it feels good to be successful for a couple of days. Now, I'd better not get cocky about it.

YORKIE, it is easy to make excuses, but sometimes you just have to do it. I remember one lunchtime walk when it was raining. It was the most beautiful time, with the drops hanging off the pine needles and leaves; and no one else was walking or running so even in the city, it was like being alone in the woods.

So, even though I started the day with a sausage biscuit, I logged everything and stayed in the calorie range. I also drank all of the water.

Today I started right with a healthy breakfast of previously frozen cherries, fat free plain yogurt and granola, plus my usual shots of espresso.

I can understand that. Evening is when I like to "snack" and not on healthy food, but on junk food emoticon I find I have to make my lunch the night before, that way if I am running late in the morning my lunch is ready. I have been trying to do my exercise in the evening because I just cannot seem to get up in the morning. I have got to start going to bed earlier at night. I will get there. In February my husband goes back to days at work, so we will be going to bed earlier and getting up at 5, so I will start doing my exercise then, instead of going back to bed for an hour emoticon

Okay, I managed to drink my 8(+) glasses of water today, but did not get my 6500 steps in . . I made 5077, a little low, but I will get there again. I skipped my work walk, (lunch time) because I thought it was going to rain . . I know "excuses . . excuses" lol I will walk tomorrow at work for my lunch break.

Bye for now. Hope everyone has a great evening and good day!

Planning is one of the most important things I do. If I don't plan, I graze. I have all the right things at home from which to choose. But I can eat a whole package of saltines or three servings of dry cereal, things which need to be in my house (for my family) and are not typically binge foods.

I have discovering that I want to eat all the time when I am tired. Lately, I have noticed that even though I am getting 7 hours of sleep (which used to be plenty), I am still tired. So the last couple of nights, I have turned off the TV earlier and been getting closer to 8 hours of sleep. I find that I am working better and have better concentration. And hopefully this will carry over to my evening eating.

Yesterday did not go according to plan, but my family helped me stop eating the second serving of dinner (I ate it for lunch today instead) and I had a fruit smoothie for my evening snack. The food I ate was difficult to track without typing in several recipes, so I estimated as well I as I could and it looks like I stayed in my calorie range AND had all my freggies.

Again today, there is a plan. I have about 200 calories left unplanned. I am short on freggies, so I plan on having V8 and maybe an orange for my evening snack after dinner.

Just checking in. Oh my goodness, I can understand your feelings about not doing good when I don't plan my meals. I have found the same thing, I just have to plan my meals better.

I had a bad day the other day and had to pick myself back up and get right back on the "band wagaon" so to speak. I did much better today. You will get there Ladies.

I did drink my 8 glasses of water and managed to make 10722 (?) I think for my steps today, so I made my goals.

Bye for now

I think I might need to write a poem called "Ode to the Orange" or something like that for my pals here. Have y'all looked through the larder and made SURE that you have the right kinds of snacks on hand. What with me having that nasty cold, I got lazy about the "right" food and let supplies lapse. So, I restocked the important stuff yesterday -- clementines, frozen cherries, bananas, broccoli, sweet potatoes, baby carrots for example. And I made sure I had enough of my favorite Dannon plain yogurt. It goes well with the frozen cherries and the frozen raspberries and strawberries I keep on hand.

Have you thought about doing some batch cooking so you have what I think of as "emergency" meals and don't end up with something you regret for supper? I'm a bit behind on that myself, and I think I owe myself a big pot of chili so I can freeze it in portions I need for that "why haven't I planned my day" meal.

My point - I fall off the wagon much more easily when I'm not doing my planning.

Does this resonate with anyone else on this thread?

I'm back to my unhealthy way of life -- too much calorie rich food, not enough exercize, and what on earth is a glass of water anyway. I think my scale went to greener pastures.

Yuck. I am very disappointed with myself. I was on track yesterday but indulged yet again after dinner. It was not as bad as some evenings, but definitely put me over my range. And my weight is up quite a few pounds since last Tuesday's weigh in. I am pretty bummed.

I have a plan for dinner, as well as fruit, yogurt, and a no-pudge brownie for afterwards. All within calorie range. Wish me luck! emoticon

The sweets get to me this time of the year, too. I think it is the "hibernation" effect or something. Keep it up, you will get there!!

I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I made my goals for yesterday, January 26 of drinking my 8 glasses of water and walking my 6500 steps (actual 10450 I think). emoticon Hope everyone is doing good. Have a great day!!

I haven't been doing the best on my eating lately. What is it about winter that seems to make you hungry all the time? Is it the hibernation effect? I need to have more self control!! And leave the sweets alone!!

It was a nice weekend except for my eating. I'm not even going to talk about it. emoticon

I walked four miles at the mall. I did not count my freggies, but deliberately chose some as snacks. This is a good sign.

And I cannot believe that we missed it! Happy Birthday, VB!

Today is Sunday, 1/25 and I managed to meet my goals . . the water and staying in my parameters that I set for myself(I think those were my goals, I didn't write them down) . . I still have a little trouble with the carb guidelines, but it is getting better . . that was a little high for today, but the others were fine - on the low side of everything :-)

I am going to have to buy some and see if I can steam it or do something with it. My husband also likes it. I just have to figure out someway to fix it. I enjoy cooking, I just have to start cooking more healthy things and not the "bad" things for you emoticon

Hope everyone is doing good today?!

I actually met the goals yesterday - Saturday. I think it helped that I was out of the house for most of the afternoon and that I stuck to my plan at the Outback. I just finished recording yesterday's food and I'm in the middle of the calorie range, and I did drink all of my water.

I love asparagus too. And several years ago a friend introduced me to rutabaga of all things. I like it when she prepares it.

I like just about any kind of vegetable you can think of. I didn't use to like asparagus, but then I tried it and I love it now. I haven't bought any to fix, I think I need to do that. My DH and I are trying to eat healthier, more veggies would help. I also like fruits . . green granny smith apples are my favorite.

You will get back on the treadmill when things calm down a little Derla! Hope everyone is having a great day!!

emoticon Okay, I didn't do so good on my watching what I ate today, bad snack for lunch, but I will do better this evening for dinner. I am going to make scallops and a big salad!!

My poor treadmill got a rest yesterday. And since I'm cooking today for company tomorrow, that same treadmill will probably get another days rest - maybe even 2 days rest.

I will think about broccoli - a vegetable I really like but DH won't eat - so I don't buy it very often.

I think I'm going to start a line of discussion about broccoli or green beans or squash. I just love broccoli, but I'm not crazy about green beans. Squash is just okay from my point of view. Asparagus is a favorite and I like cauliflower.

Speaking of vegetables, I did well on water yesterday and I recorded most of my food, but two of my friends took me out for dinner at an Indian place last night. I took a doggie bag home with me, a good sign and so will have tandoori chicken for lunch today. However, we then went back to one of the friends home and ate peppermint pie and laughed a lot. It was a special occasion, which will be continuing today at the Outback for supper with another set of friends. At least at Outback I can get steamed broccoli with no butter and we'll split the birthday sundae.

Gotta go.

Have a great day everyone and think about broccoli!

Oh No Ma'am, you are fine !!! I just need to learn to have better control over my cravings emoticon I may have to bake some of my own though. My husband likes oatmeal chocolate chip, maybe I should make some of those instead?

I promise to not mention those three C words again - even though I do have to bake more tonight for some grandkids that are coming for the weekend.

Oh Ladies, chocolate chip cookies are my weakness emoticon I hope you don't mind my joining in? Here are two goals I am going to start with. When I do one for 30 days, I will take it off and then add another one.

1. drink my water - 8 glasses a day
2. walk 6500 steps per day

emoticon everyone on making your goals !!

Too much chatting about cc cookies maybe. They called my name last night and I answered emoticon

I managed with the enough freggies, not so good in the calorie department.

I need to track calories this weekend or I feel I will definitely go over and gain again.

Hope you had a good night's sleep, VB.

I do love chocolate chip cookies and I do not have them in the house. I'm currently at the low end of my calorie range, and may not eat anything else. It is after 8pm and I'm tired - darn cold. I think it's best to get another good night's sleep.

There are chocolate cookies in my house, too. And I made them. I had a few on Sunday, but have managed to control myself since then. It is nice to have them to put into the kids' lunches.

Yesterday, I met both my goals: six servings of freggies and within my calorie range. Today might be trickier, but I'm giving it a shot anyway.

I was doing so well yesterday - doing fine with the treadmill, and the calorie count was within limits -- until I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies. I don't even want to begin counting those calories. I predict no weight loss for this week.

Yesterday was also a good day for me. I drank the water & recorded the food. I was at the high end of the calorie range - that corn muffin was calling to me last night. But I got my calcium and I had half a banana, two oranges, previously frozen cherries, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. So it was a good freggie day too.

Yesterday evening was much more productive since I was not so tired. But snacky food beat me up after nine. In the end, I went significantly over my calorie range and my innards are telling me it was a bad thing. I know, TMI.... (Too Much Information).

Anyway, I got all my freggies eaten yesterday. I have a scheduled snack for after nine o'clock. We'll see if it helps to keep things under control.

owl, you must have been really tired. Take care of yourself.
Joan, if the food gave you comfort, then it was worth it. Take care.
Stayed with in calorie range today, but didn't drink all my water.

I'm about to crawl into bed - 7:21pm. This cold is really getting to me. I drank all of my water & trackced all of my food, but I was about 100 calories over for the day. Comfort food I suppose. Not too bad considering.

Yesterday I ate all my freggies. I went way over on calories though. I guess I was really tired. I ended up sleeping nearly 10 hours last night. Could be I'm fighting a cold. I feel better today and on track.

So for yesterday, the 19th, I met all of my goals -
- drank the water
- tracked the food
- stayed in the calorie range

And the scale was down a pound this morning.

Oh good, true confessions.

I did not track on the weekend either. I didn't feel good with this wonderful head cold. So while I did drink my water, I wasn't worrying too much about what I ate. I don't think I went overboard, and I am down 2 pounds from last Monday, so that's good. That says to me that I stayed hydrated.

I still have the lousy head cold, but I am back on the tracking wagon today.

I did not track over the weekend, but feel like I was more in control this weekend than others. I chose more freggies than usual and fewer snacks. And the scale showed me that I was successful. I am actually down six pounds from last Monday. Sounds like alot, but I think I have significant water weight on Mondays.

Today is looking promising.

Weekends are bad for me also. And this is only because my hubby doesn't worry one bit about what he eats. He is the cook in the family (I burn EVERYTHING!). So I manage to handle my lunches throughout the week at work, but the weekends are killers at home.

My January 2009 goal has been to get back on track with my fitness & gym routine & drop 8 lbs to get back to 200 again. I'm making some progress...

I did make my goals yesterday. Weekends are more dificult and as I wrote in another thread, I started out with a scone. Not sure about the calories on that, so I will try to be vigilant the rest of the day.

I had a disruption to my plan as well. We went to Wendy's for lunch but I stuck to the grilled chicken sandwich and had some mandarin oranges. My raw cauliflower, carrots & red peppers were move to supper tonight, and I'll have the peanut butter & jelly sandwich tomorrow.

I'm short on calcium and about 350 calories below the max, so I may have some homemade hot chocolate shortly.

I *should* make my goals today.

I was slightly over my calorie limit yesterday (30 calories), so I am calling the day a definite success. Six serving of freggies passed my lips.

An unexpected pizza lunch disrupted my food plan for the day, but hopefully I have made the appropriate adjustments. And it might be tough to get all six freggies in today, although I should have four by the time I leave work today.

Derla - good job on the walk & water.
Debbie - way to go.
Carleen - I read elsewhere that you are meeting your goals on Spark People, so good for you!
Jan - is it quiet at home yet?

I just love pancakes. Gotta stop thinking about them now though. When I take my nephew to Disney in March, I will have a couple of bites of his usual breakfast order of pancakes. He's 11 though, so I might have to fight him for them. He's growing like a weed.

Walking - another 1.3 miles on the treadmill.
water - getting better
but Calories - not a good day. DH loves to gift me with candy and we also had pancakes for supper. Way too many calories.

I was looking at the google map of the section of Hawaii. It looks like the walk is going through snow - going near the volcano? I remember that somewhere on that island, inland and at higher elevations, I think, there was a very large cattle ranch.

Day 4 complete & successful! It helps I guess that I am not feeling great and ready to go upstairs and stretch out.
- Water - yes
- Record everything - yes
- Within the calorie limit - 200 calories under the limit, and yes, I'm within the range. That's four thumbs up.

My plan did not work as expected, but the alternative was good. DD#1 made me a spinach salmon salad .... nummy! I didn't bring her up on healthy veggies and fish, but she has come around to them and it makes me happy.

In my calorie range and six servings of freggies yesterday. emoticon

Hang in there, everyone. We can make it happen.

I had a message all finished and almost ready to post - it totally disappeared. Who knows what message board it will show up on.

Accountability!
I did use the treadmill today - 1.3 miles
Drank about 5 glasses of water today - that is quite a bit more that usual.

So I guess I did meet my short term goals.

Owl - good job on the freggies. Glad you have a plan for tonight.

I've successfully completed day 3 of my streak with a ceiling of about 30 calories below the max for the day.

- Water - yes
- Record everything - yes
- Within the calorie limit - yes! And now I must go upstairs or play the piano or something. Gotta get out of the kitchen!

Three thumbs up for me.

So last night, the outside of the cupboards were painted white. I liked it. I am not sure when I get to see the doors painted red. Maybe tonight....

Although I ate all my freggies (and loved them), last night did not consist of good eating. That's all I have to say about it. Moving on.

Tonight is another night. There is a plan. Now I just have to stick with it. emoticon

Jan - sounds "exciting" at your house. Hope it goes back to calm soon.

Carleen - I sort of know what you mean about committing to the project when someone is going to do it. I have to say, I like red though - Go NC State!

Here's today's results -
1. Make sure I drink all of my water - Done!
2. Use the food tracker and be honest in it - Done!
3. stay in the calorie range - Done - with about 70 calories to spare, again.

I need to sit down and think up some specific goals.
The past couple of days have been really hectic with DD #2 visiting with her 18 month old boy that cries a lot at night, and 3 year old daughter. DD has been gone to seminars for work and visiting friends, so we've been tending and getting up at night, or getting woke up at night and things are just crazy. I had to take the kids to my Mom's this morning as she is watching them now, and it took me 2 hours to get ready!! Good grief! But they will be leaving to go back home this afternoon(about 5-6 hour drive south), so hopefully tomorrow things will get back to normal and be a bit quieter at nights!! I need to play catch up with my mileage, also.

Derla, you got more snow than we did in the cities...only two or three inches....but it was blowing around alot. I shoveled the sidewalks but left the driveway for DH (and DD).

VB, You'd think it would be a good thing that she wants to do projects around the house. But then we have to make decisions (not just speculate) and actually fork out money to buy the supplies. She is painting my 50 year-old, varnished cupboards white with red doors (the floor is red and white tile...we like red). But will I like red and white cupboards? Time will tell...

Goals!! I've never really set goals before. Guess it is a good time to start. Two goals that really need to be met are:
1. drink water. I am never feeling thirsty, so drink very little water - need to change that.

2. Get in some exercise every day (or at least 3 - 4 days a week). Today, my exercise was shoveling snow. I heard we got about 6 inches and the wind was blowing it around pretty forcefully yesterday afternoon and evening.

I stayed inside my calorie range yesterday and had seven servings of freggies. emoticon

DD#1 is bored at home, so she is working on painting my kitchen cupboards. Yesterday she took all the doors off, exposing the food. For me, "out of sight, out of mind" works pretty well. But last night I just wanted to the cake, chips, and peanut butter. Why couldn't I crave the canned tomatoes instead? emoticon Good thing the cake is old and a bit dry, so I resisted.

I'm not sure where I am in Hawaii. At the very first post in the Hawaii link, Owlwho suggested several different walk lengths, and they are all on one island. I'm doing the 58 mile walk and I've covered just over 27 miles. Let me see if I can find a map that shows where I am. Not sure where Owlwho is though.

If you click on this link, you'll end up in google maps, and I'm currently at the flag marked A, and I'm headed to the flag marked B.

In our 50 + years, we are allowed a few senior moments. In fact - we should probably treasure them. After all, we are doing others a kind favor - they will laugh at us and we all know how healthy laughter is.

I am going to tag along behind in at least a part of a walk in Hawaii. Years ago, I spent a couple of weeks there and I'd love to revisit some of the places. But how are you planning to get from island to island? And just where are you now?

Ever since the big five-oh, my brain does not always kick in! Last week I said "My jar is a door" when the driver's side door didn't shut all the way. I am glad someone is paying attention. emoticon

Carleen - have you noticed that your signature says you are hiking in Hawaii in February? Do you have a time machine and may I borrow it sometime?

Thanks Carleen for setting up this thread. I'm hopeful that other will join us. For others who may, Carleen and I were having a conversation in SparkMail about how our new smaller sized jeans aren't fitting like they should. Here's an excerpt that got Carleen to say - let's have a challenge on this!

"I'm trying to rededicate myself to making smart choices, at a very stressful time ...but that aside...what shall we do? For myself, I guess I'll take on three main goals this week, starting today and they are -

1. Make sure I drink all of my water - so far so good
2. Use the food tracker and be honest in it - so far so good
3. stay in the calorie range - we'll see"

So far I'm doing well with the water & food and in the morning I'll follow-up with how I did on item 3.

Thanks again Carleen! (Owlwho)

-Joan

I, for one, am having some problems keeping up with my new lifestyle. Hence, here is a new thread to help me and anyone else to stay accountable to each other. I hope this thread can be used to list your goals for the day/week/month. Come here and post as often as you like. Be sure that you not only post your goals, but also an update of how you are progressing (or not) on the goals you have previously posted.
