I have to wear shoes always, I've tried barefoot but the impact is too much. I love cross-training shoes the best they support lateral movement etc. I've tried the Zumba shoes but they don't have enough support though they were better than running shoes!!! LOL

When I'm at home...I do Zumba barefoot, but when I am teaching I wear the Zumba shoes...but I am finding that those are not working well...they are making my arches hurt and I'm thinking it might be because I teach in a community center with a concrete floor that doubles as a skating rink for the kids...Any other ideas on shoes? Maybe a cross trainer? Thanks!

Thank you LIZZIESIDE and ELIZABETHJ2013

I've decided the Zgliderz PLUS or the Slip On Dancers are the best idea for me. Dancing on the carpet is not good on the skin!

I just got the new Zgliderz PLUS with the heel strap so they let you do hardcore Zumba on carpet without slipping off your shoe at all. So much cheaper than buying a whole new pair of shoes!! I always like zgliderz more than other carpet gliders, but they did tend to slip off the shoe occassionally. I'm so glad they fixed that! lol

I finally got my Zumba DVD's out and I've been doing it barefooted. So I'm glad I saw this thread to get ideas of footwear.

Shoes. I bought a pair of Capezio dance sneakers just to use in Zumba. Good support with a split sole and a sole that allows me to slide while still gripping the surface.

Same here! I've been use the Z-Gliderz for over a year now with no problems. They slide on carpet well and are very durable. Don't know if they're in stores anywhere, but I got them directly from the website at http://www.zgliderz.com

I could never dance barefooted! I am picky like that.. Although I don't want to spend a lot of money on shoes either. The solution I found I got it from my instructor. She handed me a pair of carpet sliders called Slip on Dancers, I dance without problems with my regular running shoes!

I use my wii all the time and do Zumba at home. I have some sliders that I use to slip on over my sneakers. They keep the soles of my feet from binding up on the carpet. They're made by a company called zgliderz.

I wear Nike cross trainers to Zumba. It is better than barefoot because of the arch support. The shoe is actually some kind of mesh material with a cushioned insert that cushions so beautifully!!! I figured Nikes are Nikes and wore some Nike Air Force 1's to Zumba class one time......NEVER AGAIN! I GOT BLISTERS the same day on BOTH feet!!! So....since my shoes are Black with purple and teal (perfect Zumba colors) I will just pick up some more cross trainers in white because my shoes were so awesome that I didnt appreciate them until I tried to Zumba in a different shoe...

The only exercise I would dare to do barefoot is yoga; I use walking shoes from Skechers to do Zumba since they work the best for me~

Hello I can tell for all my more han 20 years as a Dancer and now Zumba Certificated Instructor than DANCE SNEAKERS ARE THE BEST!!!
They give to you many benefits:
a) Extra cushioning in heel with a air bubble and forefoot
b)Dance sole for easy glide and turn
c)Split sole design
d)Good for dance oriented workouts
e) flexible Arch support
Whit those you won't complain about any injuries!! all others with a flat sole don't do that much. I'm know them and soon i'll start my own company here in USA selling DANCE SNEAKERS WITH FUNKY COLORS AND DESIGN ;-). Go and find my NENE'S INC. Dance Sneakers at: www.blastinmoves.com Happy dancing lol!

Ive suffered from this a lot in the past...I hate wearing shoes for zumba because they feel heavy, but have found its necessary as to not irritate this problem and get it acting up again. It took months and months before it went away. I am also careful about what moves I do. (for my knees too)

I suffer from plantar fasciitis and need to wear orthotics in my footware for Zumba...unfortunately, I could never go barefoot. And I have to be very careful on some of the Zumba moves to keep from making my feet hurt. Otherwise there would be no Zumba at all for me.

My zumba class takes place at a martial arts studio with the whole floor covered in mats. It's nice because there is not as much painful impact when you are jumping around. I do it in socks because I noticed that my sneakers don't pivot well on the mats.

We're required to wear shoes at the gym that I attend for Zumba (which is a good thing!)
At home it depends on whether I'm going to do a full 60 min session or a 30 min power session!
I'm lucky that I've got hardwood floors that easily clean and that are smooth!

I went barefoot the first few times but then I was developing blisters on my big toe from the carpet so then I bought the Dr.Scholls shoes that look like ballet slippers. They were on clearence for 2.50. Made quite a bit of difference and still let you feel like your on the floor.

I wear shoes, my DD wears socks. My feet were burning and aching really bad. I know I need to get new shoes, but it's not in the budget yet. I wore 2 pairs of new socks with my DD's older and a little bigger sneakers. Until I get my new shoes, this will do. Last Monday it felt a lot better. We will see tonight if it is the trick. I was looking at the Nike Mystique.

Definitely with shoes! The few times I have tried it with just socks, it really hurt my arches...plus bare feet create too much drag--hard on the joints--and this is pretty unsanitary if you are dancing in a public place.

I wear Nike Musique dance sneakers, which are fairly smooth on the bottom. I also put baby powder on the soles of my shoes to reduce drag. I am dancing with no ACL in one knee, so I do everything I can to protect my knees from more damage.

I am super careful with my dance sneakers (well, all dance shoes really) as they are so expensive and I don't want them dirty or scuffed. I wear sandals to class and change in the gym. I also put foot powder inside to keep them fresh and I make sure not to leave dirty socks inside the shoes or to leave my dance sneakers in my gym bag--bad idea!

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

If I could dance barefoot I would, but my feet just get too sweaty. I was using my old jazz boots, but they ripped so I bought a pair of Capezio split-sole jazz slippers that have sneaker like soles so that I don't go sliding all over the place. I love them. I had been using my running sneakers and they made my fun ache, but since I've been using the slippers my feet haven't hurt and I have a much easier time doing all of the dance moves.

I started out with bare feet, but by mid-class my sweaty feet don't pivot well on our wood floors. I tried my walking shoes next, but I felt very clumsy and they also grip too much. I plan to order some "foot undies" from the Capezio (dance wear) online store, but until then, my super cheap crocs work just fine.

I also am barefoot because I workout on carpet. I'll try the duct tape on sneakers idea. That might help my knee.

You should wear sneakers, preferably cross-trainer ones since you have not only forward movement (running shoes are good for forward motion only), but you have lateral (side-to-side) movement as well that cross-trainers will offer support for. Not using any shoes is a poor choice as injury is waiting to happen. Have fun zumba-ing!

I definitely wear shoes for Zumba. The floor at the studio I go to is very slick. Plus we do a lot of jumping and the shoe cushioning really helps. I tried a less supportive shoe and my feet ached by the end of class.

When I do zumba at home im barefoot only because I have carpet. but in class im in sneakers and I think that I am beginning to feel the difference. I'm starting to feel sluggish with the sneakers because I don't have the freedom of just being barefoot.

No matter who we are, what we do, and what we look like God loves us all.

Hi Joy,

I have been using the Boost DRT Mesh Sneaker for the past 4 months or so. Bought them from Zappos (free shipping!!) emoticon The first time I used them in class, I was amazed at the difference I felt. Proper equipment makes a world of difference ;o)

I really do love them - but seem to be getting a chronic pain along the bottom of my right foot.
Pretty sure the problem will go away - IF I stop dancing - but what kind of option is that? ;o)

Goals -

20 pounds gone - Buy slinky cocktail dress
30 pounds gone - Buy size 4 pants

I always wear shoes - even bought a pair of Blochs to dance in. (They make a world of difference).

For me there is just too much jumping around and sliding and whatever for shoes.

And what do you do when your feet get sweaty and start sticking to floor? emoticon

I couldn't tolerate either bare feet or split-sole dance sneakers. (I tried several brands.) But while hesitating over whether to drop $100 on a pair of Nikes, I discovered that duct tape on the bottom of my old cross-trainers worked like a charm on every surface! Leaving the heels untaped gives just enough traction. :)

I was 'bare-footing' in Zumba wearing the vibram five finger shoes and I ended up fracturing my feet. With the intensity and jumping in Zumba I really need the support. I bought some new shoes that are specifically for cross training and I haven't had any issues.

Hmmmm.. Interesting take on the barefoot vs shoes debate!
I occasionally practice Zumba routines barefoot when I'm at home and on carpet. But I never do high-impact moves or jumping in bare feet.
At the gym, I still prefer split-sole dance sneakers..

I go barefoot. Our class is on carpet and it was difficult trying to pivot without injuring myself. The human foot is an incredible piece of engineering. I used to be flat footed but since I have started exercising without shoes, my arches are raising as my feet are getting stronger. Not having the support and cushion on your foot forces your body to move more naturally and strengthen muscles that have atrophied over the years from wearing supportive shoes

You're right about other dancers, for ballet, jazz. But tap dancers do (it's not just taps but it is a full shoe), some jazz dancers do wear very supportive sneaker-type shoes, and hip hop dancers usually wear sneakers too.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on one point however... Zumba is not just another type of dance. It is also fitness. So dance alone, I can totally see that. But Zumba is not a dance class. Depends on the instructor too, I think, because some are more dance-oriented, but some are more fitness-oriented. I try to balance the two.

Websam, if you think about it, dancers do not wear athletic shoes. Depending on the type of discipline, they wear soft bottom shoes (for ballet or jazz) that gives no support or they are barefoot. Zumba is just another type of dance...

That is interesting.

I would say as far as walking and doing things that do not involve high impact, (jumping), that I agree the foot should be able to support itself. I don't yet know how I feel about jumping and other aggressive activities barefoot.

This is an interesting thread because my physical therapist just suggested that I start working out barefoot while on the stepper, treadmill and doing Zumba (at home of course). I've been having problems with my lower back and knee and he said walking or exercising barefoot will force me to stand differently because my feet are unprotected. Oddly enough, I have noticed an improvement since trying this.

I've always worn regular cross trainers, they seem to work well with the moves. I did not realize there were specific shoes for Zumba! I think I'll do some more research.

Whatever shoe you buy, try it on, slip around in it at the store in Zumba-type moves to be sure it's good for you. A Nike Musique shoe is good for some, but I have heard people with wider feet complain about them. There are a lot of shoes with smooth bottoms. Make sure it fits YOUR FOOT well. :)

Yep. Shoes are good. I'm picking up the Nike Musique's today at FootLocker. Footlocker, Lady Footlocker and Champs carry them in my city. I'd call around to see who has them. www.nike.com has them but there cheaper at the shoe store.

Happy shoe hunting emoticon

I wear SHOES!!!
I used to do zumba in bare feet on the carpet at home and it was fine, as long as I was careful to do it with low-impact modifications. I danced in bare feet more to just practice the steps than to get an intense workout.
Now I do Zumba almost every day and I always wear good shoes!! I find my feet can't take it if I don't have good support and the proper shoes. I wear the split-sole dance sneakers with the pivot circle on the ball of the foot. Many people also really like the Nike Musiques-by far the most popular at our gym!!

I'm not finding Nike Mystiques online. Where do you get them?

I've been using a dance sneaker from discountdance.com and I like it. It's fun not having any traction because I can swivel and turn so easily, altho I've wondered if this is a good thing or not from a Zumba point of view.

I wear shoes when we work out at the school cafeteria because I need the support although at the gym theres carpet and I usually do it barefoot there. Saving up to buy me some Nike Mystiques so I can do the moves without my shoes sticking to the floor! Like the idea of the tape on the balls of the shoes, they should help until I can get the others in. ZUMBA LOVE!!!

Sneakers! You need support. But, if you are on carpet, you do have some options.

1. packaging tape on the ball of your sneaker.
2. www.slip-ons.net. For carpet, I think I'd go with the 3" one.

I do the DVD's at home on carpet bare foot. I'm finding that my knees are a little sore but I need to keep going till I can get the steps right and I can try a class at the gym (I guess for that I'll have to wear shoes)
