I have been going to Zumba for over a year. I started with Zumba Gold and progressed to Toning, now I do two toning sessions a week and 1 fitness session. I would do more if I could but there is a fine balance for me because I have a foot injury that gets worse if I regularly do more. That said, whenever I am on vacation I pick up extra classes because i can manage short bursts of extra classes. If not for the injury I would Zumba daily, it is my happy place, but instead I swim and do water exercise for 6 hours a week.
I can't really describe how much my titness has improved. I am constantly intensifying my sessions. I am energetic and strong, my mood is upbeat and I am physically and mentally resilient. But I didn't lose any significant weight until I seriously restricted my eating, starting January this year. Now I feel fantastic! At Zumba this morning I nearly had a wardrobe malfunction because my Zumba pants kept heading south during the wiggles.
No matter what else is going on, Zumba is big fun and if you can do it, you should give it a whirl! You won't regret it. emoticon

I really like my Zumba Wii "join the party" dvd. I might actually join a class someday. I am convinced that it really helped me last week as I wasn't as true to my eating plan, I had a couple nights eating a lot of the wrong things; but I was so excited to see that I had dropped a pound. I am not doing the amount of time that some of you are doing but I am working up a pretty good sweat at this point of only doing it a few weeks. So glad to find something fun that gets this 56 yr old body moving:)

@TERRAHNE - Don't be discouraged! I started doing zumba regularly (that means 6x a week) about 2 months ago. I decided at that time to stop weighing myself for a while and just enjoy the fantastic workout that zumba gives. When I finally weighed myself last week I had lost about 6 lbs (I am not very overweight, I only need to lose about 10-15 lbs. So that was a significant weight loss for me--I had been trying to lose it with mostly diet, but it wasn't working out for me.) That's less than a pound a week, but a sure and steady loss, and one that is sustainable. I have been watching what I eat, but not "dieting".

More important, my clothes fit much better and I am sure I have lost many more inches than pounds. So my advice is to just keep at it and stop weighing yourself for a while.

I started Zumba last monday and have went 9 times already....I would have thought I would lose weight but I haven't. Actually I have gained. I know its muscle but I am totally shocked not to have lost any weight at all. It's very discouraging

LOL--in our class, the instructor changes the class up pretty often, so really, no one has time to be watching or judging anyone else--all eyes are on the instructor.

@JASELI24 I agree with you. I personally do not enjoy working out alone. I've tried equipment in my basement and the Wii and I much prefer being with people. I fell in love with Zumba when I found the "right" instructor (we have the same tastes and we've become good friends). She set the tone to attract similar types of students so that we all get along beautifully and are excited to come and also to chat before and after class. I never had much weight to lose, but the 7lbs apparently made a visual difference that everyone has admired and I feel great. Getting that support through compliments (both in how I look physically and how well I'm dancing) is something I'd never get from working at home. There is no judging in the class - we just have tons of fun together.

Technically Convention starts on 8/14, but I arrive the day before! So Excited :)

I've began Zumba about a month ago and though I am not certain how much I've really lost as I don't believe in scales, my clothes do not fit :) I need a whole new wardrobe. I use Zumba WII. Everyone says the classes are better i say this. I have been working out and exercising for over 10 years and have taken all classes from pilates to kickboxing at all local gyms and working out at the comfort of your home where you know you can move and not worry about anyone staring at you and really get a work out is certainly a good way to go. Don't let others tell you a class is better than a WII or a kinect or DVD's are better, DO WHAT YOU LIKE. As long as you are dancing zumba and loving it and feel motivated that is the key to success. emoticon

I just started today, buying the Zumba Fitness for the Wii. I'm learning the basics, but it's still an incredible work out! I can only hope to lose 30 pounds by the end of the summer!

I started Zumba classes about 6 weeks ago. I really love it. This week we did Zumba, Irish jig, country and some rap music to Zumba moves. It was great to mix it up. I am beginning to see a difference in my body. That's always good. emoticon

I just started Zumba Exhilarate on Saturday, the 11th of February. I did the Step-By-Step DVD 4 times over the weekend! I'm addicted! I'm not coordinated enough to move on just yet but I noticed a huge difference in my energy level when I got up for work this morning. Sitting here right now all I can think about is getting home to do it again! I've been making healthier choices in my diet for a few weeks now and have already lost 7lbs. I can't wait to see what adding the ZUMBA does for my weight loss goals. My nephew is getting married in May and I hope to have lost 20lbs by then! Fingers crossed and hips swinging!

My DD and I started doing zumba about one month ago. I only lost 3 lbs. so far. We also have been doing WW. The first couple of times I did zumba I thought I would die, but it is getting easier. I can bend a lot easier if I need to pick something up. I am hoping that they add a Saturday class so we can go 3x/week.

I started doing Zumba in April 2011. At first it was just 1x a week but now I do 2hrs on Mondays and andhour on Wednesdays. I'm not really on a "diet" but I do make healthier choices and track on SP. Since April I have physically lost 25lbs, but mentally I feel like I've lost 250lbs! I feel like I can fly, baby! Zumba is doing that for me and I never want to stop :-) Congrats to everyone on their success. Whether it is 1lb or 100lbs each one is a victory!

Hi! I haven't posted to this topic for a couple of weeks now....and an update!
Last week I managed 4 classes!! (2 Gold and 2 Regular)....... Last Monday I finished the Gold class and went "WOW...I still have energy to burn!!" (which was also a note to ramp it up...)
So I decided to start taking the regular classes as well to challenge myself! Today was my Monday Gold class and I did a high impact workout all the way through....(I'm so proud of myself!! and still had energy after!!)
So...Strength is way up!
Stamina is way up!
Inches are coming down!
Weight is coming down!
And the added bonus??
I'm becoming an oxygen junkie....gotta love the good feeling after a great workout!

I wear my heart rate watch during my 60 minutes Zumba classes, and I was burning between 900-1050 calories a class! It really kicks your butt!

Starting a new session 2x a week, Tues and Weds, from Aug 2nd until December 15th. Wish me luck! I'm excited to start shaking my booty again!

I started doing zumba in April 2010. I went 1 x per week and just about died but totally LOVED it! I gradually added more classes but then had an injury- plantar fascitis- that really hurt me. I worked through that and really got accountable for what I ate. I then added strength training in 2-3 x per week. Now I do that as well as zumba 4-5 x per week. I have lost 59 lbs! Now that everything is clicking I feel like the weight is pouring off of me. My instructor does physical assessments to see where you fitness level is and I went from not even able to finish the first test so very poor to above average now!!! I feel incredible!

I've been doing Zumba for about a month now, but it was only last week that I signed up here and started tracking my food again. Woot, I'm down 3 lbs! :D Something on the scale! Although I had already begun to notice a change in my measurements. My super-tight-fancy jeans are actually not so super-tight, and much more comfortable to be in! Progress!

I've been going to zumba off/on for about 3 years now. I absolutely LOVE it! The first summer I was going about 4-5 times a week (Sunday-Saturday) sometimes multiple times a day (if it allowed). I had lost 30+ lbs in about 3 month, I'm back on track with zumba again (it's hard to go to zumba when that's where you work) and am continuinig on the downward loss! Since I started back about a month ago I'm down about 5-6 pounds. Not alot but it's something!

I have been doing Zumba now for about 6 months, I have lost 40 pounds. I have a lot more energy. I have done Zumbathons that last 2 hours, and not taken a break. This isn't too bad considering I am still over 300 pounds.

PIFFLED: Just wanted to let you know, that when I started working out consistently and eating healthier, it took me awhile to see a big change in the scale, however, I was dropping inches like a mad woman and my body composition changed, then the weight loss came with it later. Just keep doing what you are doing and do it the best you can and it will catch up! :)

When I started in May of 2006 I was:

12 inch arms

As of 7-25-08 I am:
168.0 lbs
37 inch chest
31.5 inch under chest (where bra band would be)
29.5 inch waist
35.5 inch stomach
40.5 inch hips

Upon reaching 160 lbs I give myself permission to order more TJ DVDs!

On the one hand, I am kinda' bummed that I haven't lost any weight. Not with P90x, not with Zumba, not with ST, walking or any combination of these.

On the other hand, the mirror is no longer my enemy - I look pretty darn good in it. ;o)

I guess I just have to resign myself to this weight range and continue to point out to me that my curves are all in the right direction.

I am so glad I tried Zumba at my gym. I always thought that classes weren't my thing, especially dance. But a friend convinced me to go and I had so much fun. I have been going 2x a week for almost 2 months (and my friend hasn't been back since). I lost 6lbs and 2inches off my stomach so far. I have had so much fun doing it that I have started to go to other classes at the gym too, like step and strength training classes. But Zumba is still my favorite.

I can't wait to start seeing results. Today is day 3 (would have been day 4 but I was so sore after the first day since I started with the toning section). Tell you what tho - I feel sooo sexy during and after the video and I'm not someone who just says that as I have some self confidence/body issues.

To comment on the shoes topic. Always, always, always wear the right shoe for the exercise you are performing. Speaking from experience it makes ALL the difference in being able to workout longer and pain free. When I went to my first Zumba class I had no idea really what to expect so I wore my strength/cross training shoes and my knees were killing me afterwards. I came home and did some research and ordered the Nike Musiques from JCPenney's and LOVE them. Much easier to do the steps and turns, and they are super cute too, which is always a plus. =)

So....several weeks in and by adding Zumba to my running and strength training rotation I am finally seeing results in my thighs. In the past 2 weeks I have lost 1 inch in my thighs! Woot-a-loo! And....I have only been doing Zumba 1x per week. Now I have the DVDs and the Wii game and am excited to try them. Finding time is the challenge. Since I work at home I feel guilty working out when I could be working. I just need to work on making the disconnect between work time and me time.

soverit: I have running sneakers but I don't like the way it feels and plan on buying dance fitness sneakers. Nike has a popular line called Musique. I saw a pair on clearance at Rackroom Shoes yesterday for $31 (they are normally about $50) but they ran really small and didn't have my size. Going to try another RR Shoes next week. I've been doing my Wii Zumba with those little pull on black sneakers that were so popular the last few years. They have little traction and feel much better than my running shoes.

I prefer regular running shoes but I am a clutz and if I do not have some traction or if I have too much traction I would be falling all over the place. I have a pair of running shoes I bought at Walmart for like $10-15. They have light traction and are made by New Balance. They do not however have good arch support so if you need that you either will need insoles or a better quality of shoes. They work for me and you might have to try a couple of different types of shoes like I did before you find what works for you.

I've heard so many great things about Zumba, so I finally looked into it. I found that the dance studios in my area are pricey ($10-15 drop in), so I am going to try a class at the 24 Hour Fitness by my house on Monday morning. A membership (purchased at Costco) is $300 for 2 years, so that makes it an incredible deal for a membership AND unlimited group classes!
I'm so excited. It's not often I look forward to Mondays :)
Those of you who go to a studio/gym for Zumba, do you find that regular running-type shoes work, or do you use dance sneakers? I've heard those are the best (lack of tread allows for more movement), but I'd like to hear opinions from those who use one or the other.
Thanks!

Tiktok9: I have heard that Wii and PS3 are very similar b/c they use similar technology and require the use of the Zumba belt. The Xbox Kinnect is suppose to be the best of the 3. It requires no belt and is better at mimicking your movements. We plan on getting Kinnect in a few months but I couldn't wait and bought Zumba for my Wii. It is great.

Well I went to my frist class the other day and it was one heck of a workout but I can't say I was feeling it this morning, because I wasn't but I will be going back. They offer it 3 days a week at the school in my area but since it's 5 dollars a class and I don't have much money these days I will go twice a week. I hope to be able to report in the near future that I to have lost weight and inches. So stay tuned.

Since I have only done one class thus far I dont have any amazing results. However, since doing the class on Monday night my thighs have been SCREAMING. I am crazy excited as my thighs are my biggest problem area. Needless to say I am sold on Zumba. Ordering the DVD's today since the classes are only twice a week. I also do Jillian and The Firm workouts in addition to running 8-10 miles a week. I also am on a weight loss program called Slimgenics. I have lost 7.2 pounds since January 3rd and now that Zumba has entered the picture I see me reaching my goal even faster than I thought. emoticon

TikTok,

I think the DVDs are great and that you will benefit from them. Another option is Zumba or Just Dance 2 if you have a Wii, Xbox, etc.

I started Zumba the second week of December 2010. I love it! I try really hard not to look at my self in the mirrors because I absolutely have no rythm but I love taking the class. I am thinking about buying some DVDs so that I can do it over the weekend because they only offer it 2x a week at my fitness center. I haven't really seen numbered results but my clothes are fitting better.

I started doing Zumba at the university I work for last Spring. The school has an awesome wellness program where I took the class for $20/quarter. Anyways, I was at 181 lbs at the beginning of 2010. By the time I stepped on board a cruise I was losing for in May, I was down to 167!

I did Zumba on Tuesday & Thursday for about an hour in the evenings. I would do Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD (20 min workout) on Monday & Wednesday. I credit these two things plus keeping my calories under 1500(ish) for the weight loss. Plus I dropped from size 14 to size 10 jeans!

After the cruise, the school didn't offer evening Zumba classes anymore and I can't afford to pay for or drive out to other gyms in the area. I've been doing 30 day shred & going to the free gym on campus (elliptical & weights) sporadically and have been just maintaining. I don't feel the same burn as I did with Zumba, you know what I mean? Unfortunately over the holidays I totally overdid the eating & gained 5 lbs and an inch on my waist, which scares me. I don't want to backslide.

The new quarter just started and again, they're only offering classes during my workday. Do you think the DVD set from zumba.com is comparable for weight loss?

Well I've been doing zumba since the beginning of October and i am
Happy to report that I've lost 2 inches from my waist, 1/2 an inch from my thighs and a 1/4 inch from my calves. And I've also lost like 2 pounds. I know those results are huge but they're a big deal for me! Reading other posts about results keeps me inspired and motivated so thank you all!!

Thanks you guys! I drive by a church everday that offers Zumba classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I read the "Dramatic Results with Zumba" thread from the bottom and that inspired me to go to class tonight.

First Zumba class, first group exercise class...I had a great time. I plan on going again on Thursday.

Thank you Sparkfriends!

Got Zumba Wii today. Loved it! Used to go to live classes but had schedule conflicts with work. I did the beginner 20 minute workout and burned 185 calories. The music and moves were very similar to the live classes I attended. The belt used to track hip movements was a bit sensitive to movement but overall this is a good substitute to the live classes.

Please let me know how you like it. I was looking at it online at amazon, and trying to see how it would be with the small video they had posted. And of course since it wasn't available for release there where no reviews.

I was doing Zumba once a week for about 3 weeks then I started going 3x/week 2 weeks ago and this morning, I had to tighten my belt! Woot! I don't have a scale at home (otherwise I check everyday and I know that's bad for me) so I have to base progress on how my clothes fit and how I feel! I'm so stoked!

Today was my first day trying Zumba and I loved it! I was doing Jillian's 30 day Shred and its a nice change not having her barking at you, even though I love her, and have fun dancing and burning loads of cals.

I must be weird cuz I just don't notice that much loss from doing zumba. Maybe because i was always active before??? Anyway, I AM more physically fit than I have EVER been in my life, and I owe that to Zumba. Because I LOVE it so much, I've been more consistently active in the past year than I ever have before!

Zumba also gave me the stamina to retry the Couch to 5K program, with MUCH greater success than last time. Hoorah!

Oh, and I also feel waaaaaay more coordinated & capable of "dancing" now!

This is my 4th week of Zumba. I gained 1.5 pounds the first week, then in the last two weeks I've lost 5.6!!! I have a couple t-shirts that I bought the night I went to my first class, size large, and when I put one on before class it was so tight I was too embarrassed to wear it. Well, I'm wearing one to class this morning. emoticon

Zumba is magic! I lost 50 lbs in 2 1/2 months doing Zumba and hcg injections. I had to go off the hcg for a while so my body doesnt get saturated to the point of not working. It has lifted my spirits and my confidence level. I then got my daughter into it. Dragged her to the gym kicking and screaming (JK). She is 25. I never thought I would see her smile again. Three years ago her boyfriend committed suicide in front of her. She was miserable- and while alive - it was barely alive. Zumba lifted her spirits and she is alive again. Really alive. Not only has Zumba saved MY life, but my daughters life as well.

Hiya. :-)

Thanks to my wife, Gothic-Rose, I started taking Zumba Fitness classes about 8 months ago when I was 283lbs. In those 8 months I learned to love Zumba Fitness, and with some toning training with weights (which was actually out of the Zumba fitness book), I've lost over 60lbs. I love Zumba Fitness more than I thought I would. Taking it 2 times a week, soon to be 3 times a week, has been totally awesome. What did it for me was I had started using the Bodybugg to track my burn, and I realized that I burned the same amount of calories in an hour Zumba Fitness class as I did playing full-court basketball for 90 minutes. So if you're a guy who thinks Zumba Fitness is only for the ladies, you are totally missing out. :-)

I was fairly active before I started zumba, doing cardio 4-6 times per week and strength training with a personal trainer. I had some very slow, hard to notice weight loss. Once I got into zumba regularly, classes for 60 minutes at least twice weekly. It was like my body melted. I actually started to lean out and now I'm able to see muscle definition. I can look in the mirror and like what I see. My body looks great. And zumba has totally become my happy place.

I just joined this team a couple of days ago. We started doing Zumba classes two weeks ago at the Curves club I manage. I also went to Zumbafitness.com and ordered the set and got it shipped right away with no problems. Zumba.com was more expensive. So now I have the 7 dvd set with the manual and the shakers. I did it 4 times last week and love it. I burned 550 calories just doing the Zumba basic dvd. That is the one that breaks down the steps for you to learn them. I already can tell my shape is slimming down around my waist. I was going to go do my dvd's tonight, but my kids are watching a movie on the player. Oh well. Reading all these blogs really motivates me to do it more and stick with it. I didn't realize the results were truly that huge. Thank you all for the comments. I have been thinking about getting certified too.

I took my first Zumba class last night and I am totally in love! I signed up for a 30 day pass (that makes it only $1 per session) and plan to go Mon & Fri (its the only two days I was able to get a babysitter). Can't wait to go back!

Love the moves and how it integrated dance moves I've seen in the clubs lol

Hi all!!!
I started Zumba in July and have been addicted since then. I try to get in 4 or 5 days and there have been some weeks when I have done 7 days. I love it an no other workout I have done has ever compared!
Since July I have lost almost 15 pounds and 1 inch all the way around: 1 inch off chest, waist, hip and arms:) I did back to back Zumba classes last night 120 min, not only did I sleep like a baby, but woke up w a happy heart.

"It's impossible." said pride.
"It's risky." said experience.
"It's pointless." said reason.
"Give it a try." whispered the heart.
