We invite neighbors to join us for holiday dinner if they are going to be alone. We started this a few years ago. Initially people would say they were coming but wouldn't show up. This year two of our neighbors came! It was so great!
When we decide to put up the Christmas tree, we exchange ornaments. The new ornaments are usually selected by interest, beauty or some sort of inside joke between the giver and the recipient. Every family member has his or her own collection of ornaments. When our children left home to start a life of their own, they took their collection of ornaments with them. Now, when they put up their own trees, they will have a piece of their childhood to help them build their own traditions in their own homes. What my parents started when we were children, has become a beloved lifelong tradition! I still have almost every ornament I've ever been given and I treasure every one of them. Putting up our tree every year often involves taking a pleasant walk down memory lane. We also drink mulled cider and snack on fruit slices, veggie slices and Christmas cookies. I love Christmas because of all of the wonderful memories that I have.
A few years ago we started making a variety of veggie dishes for both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. We replaced most of the calorie rich foods with all of the different veggie dishes and added new yummy spices. The result was that we actually are eating a more healthy meal with many more food choices!
