Sorry for the delay in reply!
There are a lot of non-canon pairings, though I'll limit it to some of the anime and manga ones (I meddle in too many fandoms, for sure!) that I really like.
Bleach is full of them.. -Yoruichi/Soi Fon (okay, this should be canon!) -Rangiku/Orihime -Rukia/Orihime -Yoruichi/Kukaku
Gakuen Alice has the obvious (and I've only seen the anime, so no manga spoilers please!) of Hotaru and Mikan. Then there's Faye and Julia from Cowboy Bebop. Hevn and Natsuki from Get Backers. I love Tomoyo and Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura. Hmm, I know there are more, but those are all that come to mind at the moment.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into those. I did watch a bit of Maria-sama ga Miteru, but fell behind way back in the first season and as more and more came out I never managed to catch up.
I'll have to go looking for some more! There's never enough shoujo-ai and yuri out there.

My theory is they turned into cars because...well, it's Utena! It's supposed to be a bit strange.
I've enjoyed the bit of shoujo-ai that I've stumbled across. I just haven't stumbled across much, alas, so I really appreciate your help.
Thank you! I'll definitely have to give that series a shot! Do let me know if you think of any others that might be a good series for me to try out.
That's too funny! I still don't quite get why they turn into cars at the end of the film either. Oh well! Lol.
I'm happy to help any one in their introduction to shoujo-ai. ^_^ It's far too under appreciated, and not enjoyed by as many as it should be.

Who doesn't love Utena?!? Oh, I guess there are people out there who find it too strange, poor things. One of my favorite Utena experiences was watching the movie in the anime room at a convention. At the end of the movie, one rather matronly-looking woman turned to the woman next to her and said, "Now explain to me why they turned into cars??"
A rose crest tattoo would be gorgeous!
Thank you for the shoujo-ai suggestions. I don't have any non-canon f/f pairing to offer, myself. I need to expand my horizons.
For shonen-ai(well, more shonen-ai leanings), I like Descendants of Darkness. You might enjoy that if you haven't found much shonen-ai you like. Lots of supernatural stuff.
And I like both the devilish and the sweet megane too. mmmmmm....

Well, I shall gladly welcome your challenge! I'm not so closeminded I won't give a good shounen-ai series a shot.
Utena is my most favorite anime! It has been for quite some time. I'd love to get a rose crest tattoo eventually!
Anyhoo, let's see. It's like you said! So far and few on the shoujo-ai series, quite unfortunately. However, I highly suggest Strawberry Panic and Kannazuki no Miko! I adore these series. Maria-sama ga Miteru is a bit less canon on the main shoujo-ai pair, but still amazing.
What are some of your favorite non-canon f/f pairings? If you don't mind I ask.

I'm pretty fond of a fair bit of shoujo-ai myself. It just seems to be much less in the spotlight than shounen-ai.
Love your Utena profile pic! Even though I've only seen the movie and a few bits of the series, I've always loved Utena and Anthy.
I like a lot of f/f pairings from less pairing centric anime series also. If you have any suggestions for shoujo-ai series that you like, I'd love to hear them. I've been out of serious anime and manga fandom for a little while now, so I'm behind on what's out there.
Hm. I might have to take your "good series" mention as a challenge and come up with something that may change your mind.

I'm a pretty big yuri fan! Most of my favorite series are shoujo-ai.
Never could get into yaoi, although I'm sure I just haven't given a good series a proper chance. Hehe.

Sorry for the delay in replying, it's been a hectic week so far. But my house is far more organized than it was!
Glad you can handle the more hardcore, as I'm not sure how much of the softer stuff I have at the moment! LOL
I love the FAKE OAV! Ryo is so adorable in it. Having all his precious blushing in color is wonderful. Now I'm filled with the urge to read it again and write fic.
Earthian is indeed finished! It's a lovely story, more of a romance than anything else, really. It's far different than Loveless, as sensei's art is obviously much less polished than it is now. I'm especially sad to hear that about Loveless! I fell behind on the series, and didn't realize that there was such a delay. I thought it was only that Tokyopop had dropped back on the release schedule like so many other series.
Oh, I adore megane! I really love those wicked megane characters, with the glinting glasses and their evil seme ways. Though, the sweet, innocent ones are nice too...
I'll be responding to your mail in just a bit. I haven't done my cardio yet, and it's a little after 9pm! As soon as I get that out of the way, I'll hook up the external drive and send you some fun suggestions!

I've stumbled across a little yuri in my doujinshi quest, but that's about it. I liked what I saw, though. Yeah, it's hard to find it in the U.S.
And yes, I can definitely handle recommendations that are more hardcore than Eerie Queerie.
FAKE: I haven't read it, but they showed the FAKE OAV at "my" sci-fi/fantasy/anime convention this July, and I wanted to see more. I'm quite okay with plot and developing relationship until the end--the "happily ever after" part.
Did Kouga Yun-sensei ever finish Earthian? I didn't discover Loveless until volume 8 was already released and I love it. I have the anime too. However, while getting restless for volume 9, I discovered that Kouga Yun has a history of slowing down on series until she walks away all together and starts something else. It looks like she's doing that with Loveless too. Nooooo....
Thanks for the suggestion about Kusatta and the downloads. I'm still unemployed after being laid off, and most of my manga reading has been from my local library--which is a great resource, but they don't have much in the line of BL.
RightStuf is running a sale on ToykoPop! Oh... If I only had the money to buy Shout Out Loud.
I'll send you a SparkMail and we can chat privately about special recommendations. I would love to expand my horizons!
By the way... Do you have a soft spot for megane or do you prefer no glasses? I've had a weakness for glasses in real life (see photos of former boyfriends) and was so happy to discover the Japanese actually have a "glasses" category.

I've given my family little choice but to accept my yaoi love. Of course, it was probably easier for them thanks to the fact that I've been out as bisexual since I was 16, so they're used to me being not exactly what they would consider normal. On that note, I do like yuri and shoujo-ai also, but it's a lot harder to find that here in the US.
I've read a little bit of Hikaru no Go, but never really got into it so I haven't seen much doujinshi. I was writing slash fic years before I discovered manga at all, so finding BL manga was a thrill.
Oooh, I've got Eerie Queerie also. It's a cute little series. Judging by the fact that you've read doujinshi, I'm assuming you're okay with recs that a bit more hardcore than Eerie Queerie?
I mentioned FAKE before, that's one that was licensed and released in English by Tokyopop. It's a seven volume series about two NYC cops. Most of the series is driven by the plot and the developing relationship between Dee and Ryo. There's nothing explicit until the last volume, but the story is so wonderful that it's completely worth it.
As far as Kusatta goes, you can find downloads for that one by searching for MegKF scanlations. Again, that's one without a lot of explicit content, and a long wait to get there, but the characters are amazing and watching Kodaka-sensei develop as an artist over the course of the series is amazing.
I've only read the first few volumes of Junjo Romantica myself. I moved about a year ago, and since then my manga and anime purchasing has taken a sharp drop. Now that I don't have anyone to split bills with, I don't have the extra cash for the crazy purchasing I was doing before.
One of my favorite licensed series that--in my opinion--got sadly overlooked is one called Shout Out Loud. It was put out by Tokyopop's Blu line and is five volumes. A great story.
Also, there was Earthian by Kouga Yun-sensei, the author of Loveless. That's a four volume series that is absolutely lovely, though tame on the BL front.
Not to mention all the stuff that's not BL but is full of slashy subtext... Which reminds me, I have to go and see if the new Bleach chapter is up.
I'll have to get my external drive hooked up and take a look at what I've got that's scanlated. I'm not really comfortable passing on links to downloads on a public message board like this, so if you're interested in that drop me a mail so I can give you a list and maybe some summaries so you can decide if there's anything you'd like to read. I work weekends, so I'm not around much then, but I will get back to it as soon as I get a chance.

Welcome Laurel! I'm SO GLAD you've joined in the discussion.
My family finally seems to be accepting/tolerating my yaoi interest as I haven't become any weirder than I already was. Therefore, I'm ready to explore more!
My first exposure to yaoi was from Hikaru no Go doujinshi. What a surprise it was to me when BL really caught my interest! All I could figure was that this must the same mental mechanism that makes guys like the idea of watching lesbian love. I have a lovely and precious collection of Hikaru no Go doujinshi...
My first BL manga I read was Eerie Queerie. For some reason, none of the guys that I manga swap with wanted to read it, but I liked it!
Thank you for the suggestions. I'll have to seek them out. Right now I'm reading Junjo Romantica, because it was recommended by several people. Oh, I'm enjoying it...! I've only read the first volume though; I'm waiting for my special order of volumes 2 and 3.
May I pick your brain for further titles? And maybe your opinions of them? Your collection sounds WONDERFUL! *sigh*

I'm sad to be so late to this discussion! I'm a HUGE yaoi fan, and have been ever since I picked up the manga series FAKE and saw the first kiss between the characters. I didn't know the series was BL when I bought it, but you can bet after that toe-curling moment I went right after finding more.
My favorite yaoi series by far is Kusatta Kyoushi no Houteishiki (aka Bad Teacher Equation) by Kodaka Kazuma. I've only seen a bit of the anime OVA adaptation, but I've read scans of the ten volume manga series more than once. Sadly, it isn't licensed, though I've repeatedly begged reps at Yaoi Con and through e-mail.
I've got a full manga shelf dedicated to yaoi, and a good stack of doujinshi, plus a few steamy anime hidden in behind all the rest of my DVDs. Not including everything that's just shounen-ai...
I guess I'm a bit obsessed.

Oooh! Thanks for the great advice! I'd never heard of Aarinfantasy's forum before but it looks wonderful!
I finished Antique Bakery and loved it! I think I gained back 7 pounds from reading it though... I appreciate being steered toward the Korean movie and away from the Japanese version.
I've enjoyed the few manga or anime I've encountered that had Yuri leanings, but they didn't cross over to Hentai. I guess I feel love is too precious to get hung up on the particulars, so I enjoy a good love story no matter who the players are.
I haven't heard of Naono Bohra, so I'll have to check it out, Also, I'd LOVE to learn the title about the person who lost a lot of weight! I need English translations, because my Japanese is awful.
Welcome to the team!! Woohoo!

I am definitely addicted to yaoi... probably outs me to say so. lol. anyway, the best place to find BL/Yaoi in my opinion is definitely on Aarinfantasy's forum. They have manga, games, anime, movies, and it's a really friendly forum if you follow the rules. If you're reading antique bakery there is a really good korean movie version of it on the forum. Japanese version is terrible though.
My favorite yaoi is manga by Naono Bohra because it's not the same old same old yaoi. I also found one recently that was about someone who lost a lot of weight! It's very cute. Weight problems are usually ignored in Japanese media...I will look for the title if anyone is interested... I'm pretty sure it was in English.
I find it hard to find Yuri that isn't just Hentai, but I've read a few short ones that were good. I wouldn't call myself a yuri fan though www.aarinfantasy.com/forum

Thanks! I don't expect to enjoy yuri, but then I didn't expect to enjoy yaoi! I figure that I should give yuri a fair chance before I form an opinion.

I can't remember any at the moment, mostly because I'm not interested, but you could try going to www.mangafox.com and using the advanced search to include only yuri. Or www.mangaupdates.com, but this one only has information (also search for genre), you can't read any manga there.

So what ARE some yuri titles? I've only read/seen yaoi and was surprised and somewhat embarrassed to discover I really liked it. Heh. My daughter was traumatized when I showed her some of my yaoi. MOTHER!
I second Antique Baquery, it's awesome! The manga, not the anime (it's a pity that when yaoi mangas are adapted to anime the yaoi part almost disappears). I also like Gravitation (not Gravitation EX - I think the series progressively got worse) and Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness). Regarding yuri, I understand guys who can't stand yaoi, I feel the same way abou yuri...

Too bad I don't get that channel anymore, but I did borrow a couple of my daughter's Descendants of Darkness books (which she'd borrowed from a friend in her anime/manga book club)and liked it. I like yaoi for the most part, but yuri's good too.

If you get the SyFy (formerly Sci-Fi) channel, they are currently showing Descendants of Darkness on Mondays from 12:00 AM to 1:00 AM Eastern time. Yeah, the yaoi overtones are really subtle, like ALDABATEUSE said, but the guys in my anime club were hyper-sensitive at the time. I like the side characters too! yummmm... The manga is still subtle yaoi, but not as subtle as the anime. Does anyone know why the manga stopped after volume 11? It was clearly working on a second story arc. According to wikipedia (if you can trust that), the mangaka put Descendants of Darkness on hiatus in 2003.
I bought "used" copies of Antique Bakery from Amazon. They are new copies that had been on the shelf for ages. I've only read the first volume so far, and I'm enjoying it. Yaoi AND food porn! Does it get any better than that?

Oooh I really liked the anime of Descendants of Darkness--it's pretty, but I really loved the side characters! It's pretty subtle--at least I don't remember any nudity, just some risque comments and situations. I'm trying to get a copy of Antique Bakery, which I've read is fantastic and contains more realistic relationships than most yaoi manga. And food! Food porn! :D

I forgot about Decendants of Darkness. I don't own it, but I saw it on Netflix instant watch. I didn't really remember it as being Yaoi at all, so it must have been pretty subtle, or else I've just forgotten...

I've never actually seen yuri either; maybe it's not as popular?
Nice Yaoi choices! Oh, and I have all of Boy Princess and it DEFINITELY went into the yaoi direction.
Yeah, it's funny how males flee from anything remotely yaoi. I wanted to play the anime "Decendants of Darkness" for our little anime club and the guys wanted nothing to do with it. And the anime has less yaoi overtones than the manga!
Never actually seen yuri, but yep, I admit I'm into the yaoi...I don't really own that much, but I have the complete collections for both the Gravitation and Loveless anime, a few of the Gravitation manga, quite a few (if not all) of the Loveless manga, and a copy of a manga called Oz. I also have a couple of volumes of Boy Princess. After reading two volumes, I'm not really sure if that one qualifies as yaoi or not, but it seemed like the story was headed in that direction. And then there's the three volumes of Legal Drug, which is kind of the same way (CLAMP put that one on hold however, so there may never be a fourth volume). One of the local anime conventions I go to (A-kon in Dallas) has a "Yaoi Fest" that I went to a couple of times...tried to make my (at that time) boyfriend go with me once, but he ran off while we were in line, LOL.

Well, Loveless IS kinda in a class by itself. I love Loveless! In spite of the yaoi overtones, I wonder if in the manga Ritsuku will end up with busty Yuiko and Soubi will end up with the teacher.

To be honest I am not a big fan of both. BUT!!! I have to say I watch loveless and i am reading the manga of it.

Manga Fox does have Eerie Queerie if you wanted to check it out. Looks like some of the scans aren't as clear as they could be.
I MUCH prefer to buy manga, because if I like the series, then it is mine, mine, mine! (And I'm supporting the industry.) But after being laid off, I'll be lucky if I can continue to buy the series I'm already collecting--there's no money for any new series.
Eerie Queerie is only 4 volumes. I bought mine used from Amazon.com for cheap. (Shipping was more than the books, because there was no multiple item discount!) Well, technically they were new, but as they'd been sitting on a store shelf for a while, they were sold as used.

Online manga is great. It lets me decide whether or not I want to buy a book copy of a manga series!
And it only has Gravitation as far as yaoi goes. I guess it wouldn't be acceptable if they had a whole section dedicated to the genre, although I'm sure it'd be very popular.
I've heard of that series! I've only read book one unfortunately, but it was very funny and I wish I could've read more!

YAY! Thanks for the link! That link also enabled me to find the link for Gravitation. When I finish my current library manga spree, I'll be checking them both out! Gotta do some major economizing since I was laid off at the beginning of July, so these links are a huge help.
Sounds like you have a better library than I. I don't think my library has much in the way of yaoi. Drat.
Well, I can always reread my Eerie Queerie volumes...

Hehe, you're welcome!
That's too bad! TT^TT I'm glad mine has Gravitation, although it appears to be incomplete.
Also, they have Junjou Romantica online. Here's the link if you want to check it out!
