Hey guys... I really didn't forget about you. I had a high fever over the weekend and was on major drugs for most of it... I did start a new thread... but under the wrong group. I put it under General discussion apparently... wow I was out of it.

New thread is being posted in the RIGHT place now. Sorry about that. I did try, promise.

Good day Red Hots,

Wow 849 minutes, that's incredible. I'm still not on the exercise path. I'm much more active and I'm trying, but sometimes, it's hard to fit it in.

Good Sunday Ladies...I'm sorry for not being on here for the past few days, but I have a really good excuse. My husband took me on a surprise get-a-way for two. This trip was to celebrate my birthday (which is today) our wedding anniversary (wich is the 9th) and Mother's Day (wich we all know is the 11th). I hope that I did well with the making good eating choices. I guess we will see when I weigh in tomorrow morning. Well ladies gotta run and spend some quality time with the kids before bed time. Talk to ya tomorrow....Have a good one.

Good day Red Hots!

Max, you gonna have a lovely garden. I'll help you harvest them when they're ready :) I don't think I'll have time to work in mine today. It's been a busy day. So far I've completed one youth leadership workshop, a field trip to the Humane Society with my Club and now I'm preparing dinner (lentil loaf, spinach salad, roasted garlic potato wedges and glazed carrots).

It's a perfect day for the beach so I'll be going after all my chores are done.

Enjoy the day!! Healthy choices!!

Hi Tisha
I'm planting about everything I can in my gardens. We are having 2 this year one for us and one for the kids. I'm having carrots, green beans, swiss chard, caggabe, tomatos, turnips, arugula, corn, etc.... I have some herbs planted too. hoping they servive its my 2nd year trying them. Its only warm enough to beach here for 3 months of the year and ugh I hate swimsuits... Maybe this summer will be different.

BTW, I must share this....
I stayed w/in my cal range despite eating my colleague's b-day cake. I didn't plan nor track my meals in advance so I'm glad I took the time to properly measure and track before my dinner otherwise I would have gone over my cals.

Eating that cake made me conscious or rather concerned about going over my cals. I did not take the chance of not measuring my dinner so I weighed the fish. After tracking everything, it turns out that the rice had to be returned to the fridge and was replaced with more veg. That's okay--the meal was quite filling and delicious.

I realize now that I am taking a gamble when I don't plan and track my food. I just won't know how much I'm taking in if I don't. I'm so happy, that I'm being more accountable. That's a healthy habit I've love to keep.

Here's to accountable friends!!

Hello Red Hots! Happy Weekend!

Lori, you changed your name. So cool, Captain. I'd never thought about traveling with a litter cooler in my car. I'm gonna start doing that. It'll be so convenient. Concerning point 4 "Plan ahead if you know you are going out. Scout out the menu ahead of time online for nutritional information," that's my strategy for my b-day celebration coming up next week.

Max, what will you plant in the garden? I've started an herb garden two months ago and forgot about it. I hope the poor plants are still alive. I don't have time to take care of a garden. I off to work early and return home late. I just may do some work in the garden on Sunday if I can fit it into my tight Sunday schedule. Most importantly, I want to go to the beach on Sunday..if only for an hour.

Have a wonderful weekend, Red Hots! Remember to keep hydrated and make healthy choices always!

Hello Red Hots!! Just like many of you, I face challenges everyday on this journey. However, I embrace new ideas/information that will help me achieve my weight loss and healthy lifestyle. I may be a little reluctant to change at first, but eventually I will adopt a new healthy habit and try it one day at a time until it become a part of my lifestyle.

Therefore, going forward, I SHALL take the time to measure my food/drink and take nothing for granted. Life is too precious to go to waste.

I pray that we ALL are blessed with wisdom, knowledge and understanding to make healthy choices as we live healthy lifestyles.

Blessing and hugs, Red Hots!!

Weekends are a tough time for everyone. It is during the weekends that I am most vulnerable to over eating, not getting enough water, and make poor choices. You are out of your routine, you don't have access to things normally in place to keep you in check.. and let's face it... the weekends are BUSY!

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO AVOID THE PITFALLS?

Plan, plan, and plan some more. So... here is a survival guide for you to keep with you to remind you of what to do in case of a weekend emergency.

I challenge you to read the article, print out the survival guide - FOLLOW THE PLAN... and come back on Monday and let me know how you did.

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivat
io
n_articles.asp?id=466

Another great SP article on weekend survival:

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/Wellnes
s_
articles.asp?id=409&page=2

And last, but not least... here are some things that I do to help me out over the weekend.

1. I carry in my purse at all times three things:
Almonds, a Tangerine, and a protein bar

By having these things in my purse I always have something quick to stave off letting my blood sugar drop too low. It is just enough to get me though the hunger pangs and keeps me out of the drive thru's till I get home.

2. Carry a small cooler in the car stocked with raw veggies, fruit, and easy access foods that are low calorie, low fat. I do this on weekends I know I am going to be out ALL day. This way if I HAVE to go through a fast food place I can make good choices such as grilled chicken and then supplement it with what I have in the car.

3. Carry a frozen water bottle (or three) with me. In the summer this is great because it keeps me drinking all afternoon. Often times I am thirsty and not really hungry.

4. Plan ahead if you know you are going out. Scout out the menu ahead of time online for nutritional information. Some of the biggest mistakes I have made have been NOT doing this and thinking.. oh it can't be that bad! WRONG

If you go in armed with information you will make wiser choices and avoid undoing all your hard work that you have done during the week...

Hi, sorry I'm so late replying. I have not been online for more than a week now, if I remember right. My weight hasn't changed, I'm still at 298. I haven't been to the gym in a few days and I let my protion control go out the window, so my goal for this week will be getting back on track with both food and exercise!

Here's hoping we all have a stellar weigh in next monday!

Good afternoon, RED HOTS! I hope all is well with everyone.
I didn't do well on the test, but I usually always measure out my food. I now know what my problem was before (butter) and I have almost completely eliminated it from my diet now. I allow myself to have a little sometimes, but very limited.
Have a great day all.

Good morning team. just checking in. These allergies are killing me. But I will find a way to get some exercise in.

I'm guilty of eye balling portions. I just find it too hard sometimes or too time consuming. Like last night I really wanted ice cream and my husband took the kids out and they have a low calorie no sugar added flavor but they list the serving size as 100 grams. What does that mean? Well all I wanted was ice cream not to have to go look up how to convert grams to ounces etc. So I just got one scoop figuring it would be close to that. One day I'll figure it out.

Hello Red Hots!! Hope eveyone's doing well.

Lori, thanks for another eye opening lesson in healthy living. I strayed from the exercise a bit as I hardly ever use butter or margerine. I totally dislike any butter substitute.

So I did my experiment with HV ranch dressing instead. I love it! I have salad about 3-4 times/week. One serving of dressing is 2 TBS (140 cals). My guestimate turned out to be 3 TBS (210 cals). Now, an extra 70 cals x 3 x 52 / 3500 = 3.12 pounds added to my waist. What a 'waste' of a waist!! LOL!!!

It's incredible!! But the sad thing is for a long time, I hadn't noticed--or rather admitted--how much weight I'd gained over the past year or so. I affirm that knowledge is power. I'm learning something new everyday and using this knowledge to turn my life around.

Take care Red Hots!!! Have a happy, healthy May Day!!

I had someone on another team comment about her husband thinking she had gone over board because she measures out 1/4 teaspoon of butter.

This fits so well with the homework assignment this week that it got me to thinking (Yes I know that is dangerous - me thinking) about what the effect of NOT measuring that 1/4 teaspoon could have over time.

Take a look at this, better yet try this experiment yourself and see what you come up with.

Eye ball what you THINK is a 1/4 teaspoon of butter or what you think is an acceptable amount. Then actually measure it ... see how much it goes over.

Take the amount that you go over and figure out the calories in it.

Multiply that by how many times a week you might have that.

Take that number and multiply it by 52 weeks - and then divide that number by 3500.

That number is how many pounds in a year you are going to gain by just that one mistake.

I used the calorie count for margarine at an extra 1/4 teaspoon a day for 3 x a week. At 52 weeks a year just that small amount is going to add an extra 1.5 lbs to your waistline a year.

It doesn't sound like much but think about how many other things you over estimate even by a 1/4 teaspoon when you don't measure.

Just some "food" for thought!

Hi team, just checking in. I'm feeling good today and so far having a great week. I did my step class today, woohoo.

I saw the challenge posted by the yellow team. They want each team to log their fitness minutes from Monday-Sunday and then post their totals at the end of the week. That looks like fun. I use the fitness tracker so that'll make it easy.

Happy Hump Day everyone! emoticon

You are welcome! I also have another little exercise... that is kind of cool. I will post it for you in a bit.

I want to apologize for not being as active as I would like with you guys. This leader thing is all new to me and I just found out that we have been challenged by another team. I don't get on the other threads very much but I will find out some details and get back with you.

Make sure you get me your numbers by end of day today!

Lori...I measured my homemade spaghetti (sounds fattening, but I entered it into the recipe calculator and it's less than 200 cals!). I was really hungry last night for dinner, and was under on my calories. I wanted a large portion. But I measured a full cup, plopped it on my plate, and was amazed how much it was! Thanks again for the "eye opener" as many are calling it! :)

Thanks Joy2Day for the comment! :)

Ya'll have a great day!

I must say that this team is doing a tremendous job. emoticon emoticon

Sue honey, you've inspired me so much since this challenge started. Thank you. You have such a great attitude--I know you'll do well next week.

Lori, the test truly heightened my awareness about portion control. I failed the test miserably with 9/16. I consider that a failure because there is now way I can achieve my weight loss goal with that score. Getting 44% of my food choices wrong could possibly cause a 1 lb gain. I thought that I was so good at measuring with my eyes. Yes, I'm sure I am but first I must be knowledgeable of the portion sizes should look like. I SHALL learn those portion sizes as it will come in handy when eating out.

Go Red Hot!!! You're doing an awesome job!!!

For sure I'll start taking the kids for a walk about town at least 2x a week.

Weighed in this morning. My first gain of 3 pounds. I'm going to attribute it to water retention and muscle gain!!! emoticon

In the past, that would have depressed me. But I know I've eaten well, and exercised as much as I could. It'll come off this week!

I've been off my foot for a week, but my doctor gave me a shot and said I can start walking again today.

I just got off my treadmill and walked 2.1 miles. Also, I am about to register to join in a local "Race for the Cure". It's a breast cancer run/walk -a-thon. I've never done one of these, and am not really doing it for speed or anything, but it's my motivation to get on that treadmill for the next two weeks and increase my own personal speed and distance. (The race is on May 10)

So my goals for this week are:
1) Increase walk time/speed on treadmill
2) Use a pedometer all week to track my number of steps each day. (It's 11:30 am and I've already gone 9597 steps today!)
3) Eat well
4) Clean out my craft room!!!

Hope you all have a great day!

Sue

My goal for this week is motivation! I have lost it - well maybe just misplaced it. LOL. Either way, it is missing. Hopefully, I can find it - AND Fast.

I took the quiz 9/16. Really bad. I will be measuring everything this week. BUT I need to purchase a scale for meats etc.

Sounds like a bunch of us are in slumps. Lets dig out and make this a fantastic week.

Hello everyone,

I am sorry to say that I have not been doing well these last few weeks. I could blame it on a lot of different things but it all boils down to me not sticking with the program that has been so successful for me up until now.

I apologize for not "pulling my weight" these last few weeks but I know that I can get it back on track.

Go Red Hots!

God does not expect perfect results just perfect effort.

Total lost 5 pds...

Woohoo. So my belly is finally better, I tell ya the BBQ chicken breasts, and baked potatoes I had Sunday night was probably the best supper I ever ate. Yummy.

Portion distortion, I'm the worst for that, I always over estimate. I try to measure my food for a few days a month to get back on track. One thing I did to help with is measure how much my cooking utensils scoop out. For instance a level scoop of my soup ladel is 1/2 cup. That helps me a lot. Another way I do it, I will measure out my portion of say brown rice, I'll make a mental note of the space it takes up on my plate and try to judge that way.

Our society now is definitely about the bigger portions. We want more bang for our buck, as it should be. Unfortunately this has come across in meals and treats that are anywhere from 2 to 5 times more than we need. We all need to learn to step away, recognize our fullness levels. If you're out at a restaurant, seperate everything in half, and only eat half, bring the other half home.

Looking forward to a much better and healthier week this week. I have a feeling I will go back up on the scale because I can actually eat food again. LOL.

My main goal this week, get walking, and get active. I'm aiming for at least a 30 minute walk every day, and a thorough cleaning of one room of my house each day.

Hope eveyone has a great week. Keep on your healthy path, you will soon reap the great rewards!!!! emoticon

Hey Ladies...

I haven't been able to weigh in. I'm going to my doctor's office to weigh in the morning. I'm not expecting too much though. This past week was my time of the month, AND I've had to stay off my foot. So hardly any cardio this week. I have continued to do floor exercises and weights, so we'll see. My podiatrist gave me a shot in my foot, so hopefully I'll be up to walking tomorrow.

Portion control.....usually I'm UNDER on my portions, which I suppose is better than being over. I do have a scale and I do weigh meats, cheeses, and nuts. But as far as measuring stuff in a cup, I'll be honest...that one would be hard to do all week long.

Lori, I'll get my weigh in to you tomorrow (Tues.).

Loss for this week: +1

I'm having trouble with portion distortion also. It's been a REALLY bad week and I almost quit altogether. I'm having a hard time being motivated. This is the first time its hit this hard since I started losing. I've got to stay on target and get the scale moving in the right direction.

Loss for this week -1
Total loss for BLC =5 pounds.

I lost one pound this past week, that seems to be my norm.

Portion distortion, yep that sounds familiar. That is probably my biggest reason why I am here. I'm not so much an emotional eater as I am an overeater pretty much from birth. I am trying to watch my portions. One trick that I use (don't laugh), I save the containers from my lean cuisine meals and will reuse it when I make home cooked meals so I can see where my food fits in relation to the plate. I've just about gotten rid of my "big" plates and only my skinny husband uses them. But I am still a work in progress as far as portion size goes.

I did the quiz and got 9/16 lol- not good!

I'll be meauring everything again this week, hopefully it helps me, and helps the scale go down next week!

I ordered an elliptical yesterday, spent way to much money on it...and it doesn't even get here till May 9th, but hopefully exercising more than my walking will help move things along also.

Goals for the week:
Meaure everything, drink my water, record food everyday!

Hope everyone else had a better week than me!

It's a new week! Lets see some numbers!

SW
CW
lbs. lost

Goals for the week!

I am having a rough week this week. I have a shoulder injury that is keeping me down under and I have been on steroids for the last week. I am up a lb. ARGH!

Here is some of what is keeping me under - PORTIONS!
Week 10 Homework assignment

Portion Distortion! That is the name of the game this week! I have had a bit of trouble this week with the weight not going down and I got to thinking about what might be the cause...

Well, I looked over what I was eating and although I still had some trouble in other areas... it wasn't enough to reflect the total LACK of movement on the scale.

It wasn't until my son watched me load my plate and comment on the fact that I was eating more at dinner again that I realized the problem - PORTION CONTROL!

I had gotten away from measuring my portions and have been eyeballing things more... the problem with that is my eyes are apparently smaller than my stomach because I was WAY under estimating the amounts on my plate.

This week's assignment is two fold - 1) take the quiz below to see how you do on your portion control perception... then 2) drag out your measuring cups and MEASURE EVERY MEAL THIS WEEK FOR PORTION CONTROL. Come back and let me know how you did.
