My daughter & grandkids surprised me with a quick visit the other evening. SIL was on an errand in the area and they tagged along so they could say "Hi" and have a short visit! Nice to have unexpected visits like this!

That is so cool. My one granddaughter comes every other weekend. Usually the other two come over at least sometime during that time. My last two live up in Duluth. I might see them three or four times a year if I am lucky.

Had a great time with the grandkids last weekend. We played games, did crafts, and watched movies. They had such a good time, they didn't want to leave.

Wow shingles is a tough one. MY MIL had it and it does wipe you out. I was hoping for nice weather this weekend too. I wanted to go for a really long walk something I don't have time for during the week.

Thank you for the info. My son is 29 years old. He has a little girl that is 8 that we get every other weekend. This weekend I have my three grandkids for the whole weekend. I am hoping it won't rain, to get outside with all of them.
I have had a rough week with the shingles very sore arm/sholder and neck. I have a hard time staying awake, fighting the pain. I am hoping this weekend will be better than the week has.
Wish me luck.

The healthy journey has many twists and turns. Quite often we take detours that don't quite work out for us. The main thing to remember is just how easy it is to jump back on the right trail. Take as many baby steps as it takes. Don't worry about rushing along the path just do it in your own time. It helps me alot that I have my own treadmill and exercise bike as I am not a gym person. Just remember that beating yourself up over percieved setbacks is not considered cardio. Just say well that wasn't quite right let's try this instead. Keep posting on the boards. We are trying to be here for this team and keeping us all motivated.

One suggestion for getting in a work out with out realizing it is I have stairs to and from my basement. So I will take one thing at a time downstairs. 5 trips and you can really feel the heart rate going, plus it doesn't take up that much time. Think in 10 minute increments as first and eventually it will increast to more. Hang in there we are all in this together.

Oh Honey, I really feel for you...you have a number of the stressors in life all together.
New job, change in family, medical issue/health, family concerns.... one would be enough for someone but to have all of them at the same time is really rough.
I can't say I know how you feel , but I can say that I have had multiple stressors in my life at the same time and both my husband and daughter have had severe cases of shingles where I could not even give a genle touch or caress because it would cause them additional pain.

Everyone has a mis-step along the way but you are now walking forward and that is what counts!

Here are some of the ways I relieve stress:

1. listening to uplifting music that I can sing and/or dance to

2. My stress ball right next to the computer AND I have one right next to me in the car for when I am in traffic jams or something happens on the road that causes me to stress.

3. Reading something I enjoy, I have several favorite authors

4. Watching a comedy that will make you laugh; and laughter releases endorphins that relieve stress, lowers blood pressure, and boosts the immune system.

5. Enjoying a piece of chocolate, or a hot beverage I enjoy....remember though keep it away from the computer....my chai tea is waiting for me in the kitchen.

6. Doing something you enjoy doing but usually postpone...i.e.. taking the time for a bubble bath, (calgon take me away!!!) or painting my nails, coloring my hair, reading my magazines, writing out a card or letter to a friend that you haven't talked/ written to lately.

7. Splashing through the puddles outside...THAT always makes me happy and feeling like a kid! Remember kids laugh about 400 times a day compared to adults who may laugh 17 times a day.
Doctors agree laughter is the best medicine....besides it costs nothing and can't hurt you. Even has a name for it BTW....Humor Therapy!

8. Back up ideas with your son....
Say you plan a picnic...it rains....who said you have to have one outside...put down a blanket in the livingroom, play a cd with the sound of wind, birds, or water flowing or watch a movie that shares camping adventures OR a travel one that takes you to places you would both like to go...if you would like to go camping then pitch a tent in the living room, make or purchase a special treat to enjoy ....just when you picnic or camp and don't forget the s'mores; you can even make them in the microwave! Use flashlight in your tent to tell spooky stories at bedtime with the other lights turn down low or off.

What do you both like to do?....dance, sing, play puzzles, sketch, color together in coloring book...don't knock it I find coloring very soothing... make some playdoh and create things or smush it up and put it away for another day. Work on a craft or gift idea together for your sisters for Christmas ....create some cards or scrapbook together.

I think...I can't do this now BUT I can do this...
I can't afford a new livingroom with drapes and carpet for example BUT I can rearrange the furniture, the wall hangings, bring in bits of nature...be that a flower, stone, shell ...

Knowing your circumstances and what your son's age and ability are you can come up with more ideas...hoping the above gives you some ideas.

My final thought is this...even though your cannot hop in your car and see your sister anymore...if you get a microsoft or other camera for your computer you can SEE her, share with her and stay close.
And other than getting a camera if you don't have one now it will cost you nothing. I heard from one team member she picks up good computer parts from Goodwill...or check on craig's list or freecycle.

My daughter lives almost 2,000 miles from here but with Instant Messaging and the camera I can be in contact with her instantly, open presents together at Christmas and see each others expressions, sing happy birthday, show her how the clothes she sent fit me, and with a laptop take her outside to see the snow, my ever-changing garden and the seasons, my flowers blooming
etc.

Think what you can do...you will be amazed at what you come up with...please share some of your solutions with me....
And take the stress challenge sparks has for more ideas and check out this link to.
Good luck and warm hugs coming your way.

I did so much better last year. I need to start walking now to get in shape to go on the Brest Cancer walk. I fell back in old habits put back most of my weight. I got a new postion at work in late January. Even though I don't think I am that stressed it took a toll on my body. Two weeks ago my sister moved to North Dakota with my other sister. We are very close. She is 15 years old then I am, but she was like a second mother to me. This took a very hard blow on me too. I want her to be happy but you can't just go hop in your car and see her anymore. With all the added stress I got shingles. Working my way through all that now. I am getting better. I need to find that stress reliever. My son is handicapped so I can't just get up and go. I usually need to plan something. That also falls though at a drop of a hat. Any ideas please help.

I am so glad you came back...so glad to see another member involved in another type of exercise.
We have walkers, those that would like to try golf, gardeners, bikers and now runners....all should enjoy getting outside in the fresh air and visiting our parks. Please let us know how we can support you, how much do you train for a run...are there special exercises you do before and after running? Looking forward to hearing more.

Hey everyone I am back. I left because I didn't get the support from anyone in the teams. I did lose some weight but still felt very alone. I would like this team to get going again. We need to help each other out. Sign in at least once a week to make sure everyone is still on the right path. Do we know how to use the information we are getting on sparks? If not reach out. Hopefully someone will answer. We should all try to meet at parks to walk or something. Doing a 5K scared tohe heck out of me last year. But I have signed up to do the 5K Brest Cancer walk agian this year. Lets all stick together and help each other out and lose wieght together. Mary

I've never taken any classes at the Y. I prefer to do it by myself. They have schedules at the Y with their classes. You might have to just jump in and take a class and see if you like it. Good Luck. I also struggle with finding time. I have settled with just going to the gym 3 times a week and do my cardio and strength training and only stay an hour. Then I try to fit in other things the rest of the week, like walks or crunches and push ups while I watch t.v. I wish you lots of luck and hope to hear back from you on your journey. emoticon

I just never can find the time or motivation. I get motivated then something always comes up and I hate it. Im needing a work out partner I think.
ill be 21 in a little over a week and had hopes and goals as to fitting in to a pair of jeans for the big day. They fit, but its not pretty. I need to get in to a habbit of making it to the Y. Do any of you have any pointers or any classes that the Y may have at night. My days are filled with work and school.

Im ready to do this.
