Dee - Bummer on the tranining issues. At least you are not taking a chance and placing yourself in a position to get injured. Always better to listen to your body!

Just registered for the San Francisco Marathon on July 29th! I'm starting my training program now becasue I have about 20lbs to lose in the process and want to give myself plenty of time to get back in shape. Anyone else running it? I'm in New York City until May if anyone is interested in long runs on Sunday morning!

So in about a week and half I will be starting my taper, as this is my first marathon I have a question about Strength Training During taper. My thoughts were to keep my normal ST routine until the week before the race and then just do streaching (maybe Yoga) that week just to keep muscles warm but still allowing them to rest up for the big day. Does this sould right or do I need to cut back more before race day?

I'm running my second marathon on 3/4. I ran my first last year with a goal of just finishing and I was injured. This time I have a specific time goal and I am training much smarter. I can't wait to see what I can do!

After trying to do long runs all last summer in our record-breaking hot Texas summer, I've decided this year that I am going to go to cooler weather for my monthly long runs. That means lots of marathons for me this year, but most of them done just as training runs. So far, after doing 26.2 with Donna in February, I will do the Lake Woebegon Trail Marathon (Minnesota) in May, Newport (Oregon) marathon in June, Massoula (Montana) marathon in early July, San Francisco marathon in late July, Santa Fe, NM (vacation run) in August, Air Force marathon in September. Maybe Maine in October and California in December, but I haven't signed up for these last two yet.

I will do most of these at training pace. Plus, I'm a Galloway run/walker. This sounds like a lot, but I have been doing 20+ mile runs every 3 to 4 weeks last summer/fall on my own to maintain my long run endurance. It will be nice to have water stops and company (and good weather and new scenery.)

Since it's a new year...and folks are setting goals for the upcoming season...I thought it might be good to enliven this thread again...
Who's got a marathon on their racing schedule this year?
I'm committed and registered to run my second at the end of September...with a dear childhood friend...it is supposed to be her first, unless she gets one squeezed in before then.
Not excited about it, but determined to put forth all effort and do the very best I can...looking forward to seeing a gal I haven't seen in probably 20 years....can't wait for that!

VDANIELS1, that's why it is so important to taper for 3 weeks before a marathon. In addition to hydration and fueling, you need to be completely rested and recovered before the race.

I am a month out to doing my first full marathon. I am excited but was surprised how when I did my 20 my body was done. I did a 10 mile race and then did the lap again. I have to remember to refuel and drink water.

The cool thing about training is I cant keep weight on, but my weight fluctuates by 7 lbs depending on how hydrated i am.

Hey, again! =)

I ran my 30K in June and had the most AWESOME RUN!! That was by far my favorite run so far. I loved the distance and the scenery on this run. Simply awesome. It was a smaller run - I think only 150 participants total, and only about 30 women, I would say. Can't remember exactly. But I ran it in 2:44 and change, 6 woman out of all the women, and FIRST in my age group!!! I even got a trophy! =)

But I tore up my hip a little, so I have been running carefully ever since, slowing my runs way down, listening carefully to my body, especially the hip. Also I have been doing therapeutic exercises to strengthen the muscles and such in that area.

Also, I ran HM #5 yesterday, and had a GREAT time!! A lady who works at my gym organized this run with several other people from the gym, so that made it really fun. Although I ran it mostly alone, it was so much fun to have other people on my "team", and others who personally know me standing there cheering me on. It was a very hard run for me, because it was REALLY HOT and humid yesterday, probably one of the hottest and most uncomfortable days we have had in Germany this year. We have had virtually NO summer, so I have not had hot weather to train in at all. But it was still fun! I finished in 1:55:48, 7th woman out of 30, and 2nd in my age group. =) Not a PR for me by a couple of minutes, but I have been running very easy lately, just aiming to build endurance and being careful with my hip, so I wasn't even expecting to get a sub-2 HM!!

Only 4 and a half weeks until my BIG mountain marathon!!!!! EEEEEEEK!

I just ran my second half-marathon this past weekend at the Halifax Bluenose Marathon Race. It was a big race, so many people (compared to what I am use to) and a lot of fun. Quite a few people I knew were there, along with 2 good friends that I stayed with. I was able to take 3 minutes off of my last half-marathon time so I was pretty happy with that!

Not sure when I will do another one. I would like to keep doing some longer runs, just to keep myself prepared!

I just ran my second this past sunday. I PRd by about 4 and a half minutes (and it was a much harder course than the first) so I'm super happy about my time.

I'm going to take a break from the long distance running for awhile. I have a half marathon planned for the end of August, but until then I'm just going to run shorter races and basically run when I feel like, not because I have to.

I have a date with a marathon June 18 in Alaska. I ran one 7 years ago in California right before i started having kids. Now 2 boys later I'd like to run another one. It's much harder fitting in the training with two kids now. I ran 15 miles last weekend, my longest run yet. I'm looking forward to this Marathon Chat! Good luck to everyone!

I'm training for my first Half on June 4th. I have a 12.5 mile LSD this week. The training has been going well and knock on wood no serious injuries.

Here's a place to come together and talk marathoning. Half, Fulls, Ultras...this is your place. Are you training for your first? Have you run many of them? Catch up with others who are doing the same thing...ask questions, share accomplishments, cheer your teammates on!
