Chemistry is hard---a lot of math---and often times teachers who know the stuff but can't teach it. Sure hope she gets a job opening in that field. Does she only want to work with large animals or just about any zoo?

Thank you. She failed General Chemistry twice, but passed all her advanced science courses with A's and B's. (Zoology / Biology Major) She's now interning at the Oklahoma City Zoo with elephants, rhinos, and pigmy hippos, waiting for an opening as ZooKeeper.

You should check into it---and congrats on her passing Chemistry and graduating. I was so glad when I did not have to do the FAFSA again. But my son has to do it for his wife now---LOL

You just reminded me to update FAFSA again! My daughter did pass chemistry and graduate! No more FAFSA for her! (I may return to college - I'm a year short of graduation)

Even if you just do the rough cut--you can update it when you do file. And check with the school to see what their due date is.

On the FAFSA--they aren't so hard IF you have your taxes done. So do a rough estimate of taxes as soon as possible after Jan 1 and then enter those numbers saying "will file" and when you ARE done, re-enter the corrected numbers.

I have DD3's done--only 2 more and I am FINISHED!

Not til next year unless he is going to go to college early. And most school districts offer a tutoring on how to do it and what it is about---make sure you go to that as it will help--also, guidance counselors often can help if you have a question.

I never did understand having to do them if your child has a scholarship---when Michael had the full ride, it just made no sense---but if we qualified, then the college got to use that money for his tuition and put that amount back into the scholarship fund----but I don't think he qualified any year for anything except loans---which luckily we did not have to take.

Yep--I can't do till we have SOME idea of taxes--although I can do "fake" number and finalize them later--but I do want to be close. DD3 doesn't get any financial aid due to hubby's income but does have a merit scholarship and they want this filled out for that. Need to remember to do it!! It isn't hard IF you have your taxes done.

One done. One to go. It took about a half hour, but my daughter doesn't have earnings. My son will take a little longer. I'm a little concerned about my taxes, though. FAFSA couldn't find me when I asked them to download my tax info. I filed a couple weeks ago, maybe the IRS is just slow.

I know what you mean----I am sooo glad not to have to fill it out anymore since Michael graduates this May. If he goes to grad school in the future, that will be all on him. I think these forms are the worst part of getting your kids in college and keeping them there.

why do they got to make those forms so time consuming? I always get stumped on the dependent worksheet. I have put down 0 as I am still claiming my 2 college students on my taxes but the stumper is if they have checked either box in line 5 then go to the worksheet and then they don't give you the worksheet on the fafsa site. Grrrrrr! Well its done. Wow I just realized I have been submitting at least one fafsa a year since 2003. You think I would have mastered it by now.

Hubby had done a rough cut on the taxes so I could do the FAFSA and, I have filed it! I will have to go back and update once we actually file our taxes but, I have one on file so the school should be happy. It was SO EASY cause it repopulated the info from last year's.

All it needed was gross income, W2 info, 401K contributions and expected tax payment for us and for DD3. Glad I got that done!

Think I will ask the guidance counselors at school to check for me---He might have to do it next year but he won't be involved for this fall----and she might qualify for more monies once they are married as his income won't be anything like her parents as he will just be starting out. So it will definitely be to their advantage.

Not sure how that works--Taylar's parents may still have to do but I don't know--I'd suggest someone involved (maybe her folks) do some reading THIS year to figure it out. Don't want to be unable to GET financial aid if qualified. We won't qualify BUT if something major happened, school wants it on file so they can help.

Not sure how that works.

For first-timers:
I hope none of you procrastinate like I did. The first year, I waited until the last minute and then discovered that it took a couple of days to get a PIN. I don't know if that is still the case, but I suggest you get started. Don't put it off too long.

I have gotten pretty good at filling them out--the first year, we had a "college financial advisor" who did it but I looked at that one and figured out how to do it myself. I am filling out just one--DD2 graduates in May and, unless she decides to go to grad school, I won't need to do one for her. Guess we'd better talk about that cause maybe I'll fill it out just in case...

I have estimated things for the FAFSA and then corrected after we file the taxes--we don't qualify but the school is giving both daughters merit-based $$ so I fill the forms out for them--as early as I can.

I am glad that I don't have to fill it out anymore---my son graduates in May---and even though he has a free ride, we have had to fill it out each year in order for him to keep it---never did figure that one out---but I think if he qualified for financial aide, they got to put part of the money back in the program to help someone else. I keep telling my friend she has to start doing it---her daughter is going to the local community college and mom is paying, but soon she will be going away to a 4 year college---and I tell her that her daughter won't qualify for the low interest loans from the gov.t if she does not fill it out.

I've been doing my kids fafsa since 2003. Without it they would not be able to attend college. One graduated and now lives in AZ. The second is now married and has an LPN but attends college to get her RN. Non of her LPN classes transferred over to the RN program. I think that is robbery. They just want her money so she takes many of the same classes over. The last two are in community college. One living at home to save money and the other on campus because he is attending a community college that has football. Retirement plan has not been a part of our planning for the future. I guess we are going to have to drop dead before we can not work any longer. MY advice it do them early even if you have to estimate!

I do all of it for my kids, too---they don't even KNOW their PIN. Silly--unless the child IS on their own, we do their taxes. etc. Oh well--we were also blessed with great scholarships but had to do the FAFSA "just in case". I now do estimated and just fix it in April.

I always thought it was stupid to have 2 pins for us and him---and when we moved he had to change his email account anyhow as it is a different cable company here than where we lived before. I don't know why they can't make this whole process easier---even redoing it sets my teeth on edge.

LOL, I know my son's as I gave it to him---LOL---that way we would not forget it. And what you get really does depend on those schools. Hopefully your son's college will up his so that will free up a bit for your son. I hate filling that thing out---especially since Michael has a free ride---but we have to every year in order to keep that. At least it is a little easier after doing the first one---but you already know that one.

Contacted the FAFSA folks yesterday because one of my daughters schools said they didn't get the FAFSA (filed Jan 1st!). I got chewed out because I asked if they needed her pin. I was told that I should not know her pin as that is private for her only.

I am also finding that EFC numbers are not meaning much now that I will have two in college. First financial aid award left us with a bill considerably more than both EFC's combined. My son's awards have always been close the EFC numbers, but they is probably because he applied to mostly private schools where my daughter found that the best programs for her were in state schools. Expecting high stress until we hear from all of daughter's schools and then wait to see how son's school will deal with his increased need.

Just got my reminder the other day---but also waiting on tax forms---really hate to do it this year as we get the tax credit for buying a house---what gets me is that my son has a full ride at college(yes, we are blessed), but we still have to fill out the stupid form. Usually doing my taxes is a piece of cake but this year it is a nightmare! Have to have someone do it---luckily my uncle does them and will do it for free---but I hate that it is so complicated.

aaa yes it's that time again. I'm waiting for my tax form as I know me and hubby made less this year

It is a futile exercise in our house as well. Thanks for the reminder though. I mentioned it to DH who said, "Oh yeah." It wasn't on his radar either.

Boy, I am not looking forward to filling it out this year because we bought a house. So now I have to reconfigure that part. What gets me is that my son has a full ride--everything paid for, but we still have to do the stupid thing every year.

We have five kids, the 4th applying to colleges now. With the Fafsa, I keep a notebook with a section for each child by the computer. You only apply ONCE for the parent PIN. You have to use that SAME PIN every year - it will not change. We only apply for a PIN the year the student is a senior. We estimate our taxes and fill out as soon as possible. You can revise later if your actual taxes are a big difference from what you estimated. I hate doing FASFA, but it is an evil necessity!

Well, I know that you need a pin for each student. The web site to go to is www.FAFSA.edgov
They have links and Help button---since it is your first time, print out the form and fill it out before trying to do it online---it will help to do that greatly. Also, by phone you can call between hours of 8 AM and midnight Eastern time--1-800-433-3243 for help.
At least filling it out this 2nd time was not as painful as filling it out the 1st time. I got this info from FAFSA pamphlet I was given last year.

This will be my first time doing the FAFSA, so unfortunately I can't answer your question, but hopefully someone can answer mine! Since I have 2 kids attending college for the first time, do I need to apply for a pin number for each of them and myself? I am not sure what I need to do. The school has been closed because of all the white stuff we have outside so I haven't been able to ask. If anyone can help me with this, I would really appreciate it.....I am sure I will have more questions as this process continues!

Okay, time to do this again---my first time to redo it from the original---I think the only thing I need to go in and change is our Yearly income---don't think anything else has changed---am I right?
