I think one of the main things causing the problems is that as the site as grown over time they haven't bothered tidying up the old code as they've gone. It's lazy and it's starting to show in places.

Nah, I just thought you were serious. So many "Help" Desk response go straight for "Well, first, let's clean up your cookies." It has just become such a common response to the provider having issues.

Kind of the 21st century version of "OK, please click on you Start menu and let's check your network settings." (But I'm using a Mac or Linux and besides I haven't changed them since yesterday and I got my email yesterday.) "Oh. We don't support those OS's. Maybe that's why you don't get your email."

I should NEVER have to clear my cookies to keep faulty scripts from locking up my system. Faulty scripts are because of a lazy programmer not wringing out his code. And cookies won't get rid of the MoB ads. I mean, if Google is going to monitor my activities and Sparkpeople is going to feed them my profile so I get directed advertising, then why do I get ads for stuff for which I have exactly zero use?

And the side column ads that keep opening in new windows without me even clicking on them. Those just kill me. And when they stick out over the text in the articles I'm reading or change the formatting, etc, etc. I know they keep the site free, but c'mon. The site is beginning to look like the outfield wall at a minor league baseball stadium.

If they would just make them less irritating. I mean, it has been over a year since I last looked up Brooks Brothers suits. But I am getting ads for them everyday. Oh and mother of the bride dresses. I would make one very ugly MoB. Then there are the ads with faulty scripts that lock up my computer.

I have been rethinking my nonuse of adblock. My son and hubby use it and lately SP has been driving me to want to use it. I accidently scroll across an ad that then becomes large and in my way or a video starts playing with sound. *growl* I get that ads need to be around for it to remain free, but it would be nice if they weren't so obnoxious.

Download an extension for your browser called "AdBlock Plus" and then you barely see the ads. It is nice.

Especially the ones the end with "....with this one weird trick" usually involving belly fat or mortgage re-fi. *eyeroll*

Actually the ads that drive me nuts are the ones that push products that are antithetical to healthy eating or fitness. Aspartame? HFC's? SP is pushing fitness with one hand and pushing against good health with the other.

I was browsing on ModCloth for a vintage dress for a play I'm in. Now everytime I log onto SP, my banner ads are these absolutely adorable dresses and shoes that I can't afford!

Has your online activity ever led to banner ads that drive you nuts?
